Hibernation
by Guest Oskar von dem Hagen- 2 replies

Who controls whether XP uses hiberfil.sys or a special partition for hibernation and how can I find out which destination XP actually uses? Background: I changed notebooks keeping the harddisk. The hibernation partition had to be enlarged - more memory. On the old notebook XP seemed to have used the partition for hibernation, on the newer system it apparently doesn't. Why? Oskar

File Association
by Guest rogeepete- 12 replies

I occasionally receive e mail messages with attachments having a .pps file extension. When I try to open these, I get the error message that this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action and directs me Folders Options in Control Panel. The .pps files come from Microsoft Office, I think - Power Point which I do not have on my computer. When I get into the Folder Options screen and check the File Types list, I see that I do have a .pps listed. I assume I should highlight this and click on something but what? Thanks -- Roger

I can't install the driver for a Microsoft mouse. Although it's tedious, I'm setting out the exact steps I followed, since this has me baffled. I'm running WinXP SP2 and have a Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0. I can't find the installation CD that came with it, and I want to have the most recent driver anyway, so I went to the Microsoft site to get it (here: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/Download.mspx) I selected the type of product ("mouse"), the product ("Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0."), the operating system ("Windows XP (32-bit only)"), and language ("English"). That took me here: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mousean…

OS with Windows XP SP3 I had a complete system restore with CD recently because of bad problems. I saved my old OE6 email account backup before doing so with removable device. Now I am back with fresh sets of everything including OE6. I am trying to figure out whether it is possible importing my previous backup email messages. So far I failed importing the older .dbx files, it is unable to retrieve.

Boot access to desktop problem
by Guest Bozie One- 7 replies

Hi. Yesterday a technician from Symantec was helping to remove a virus from my machine. He went into my registry to change some values. (I wanted to the titles for all desktop files transparent). Immediately afterward, a strange dialog box began to appear everytime I would boot my machine. The dialog box appeared right after the Windows XP splash screen. It is basically an all white box but with what looks like "junk/trash" characters in it. Generally there are only three characters. The first character was a like a small rectangle standing on end followed by this: èr. The title of the dialog box was this small rectangle and ç. I have to click …

I have created a BartPE from a XP professional installation CD. My question is: is is possible to test it out on a Home edition system? I mean just look at the IDE if there is any. I am not going to apply any of the options. Final question: when I run the BartPE CD does it mean that my desktop is now running XP professional and not Home edition? OR

SP3 & Start Menu & Mouse
by Guest jimrx4- 3 replies
Forgive this post if it is redundant but I think my last post was lost. I did a clean install of SP3 (nLite integration) and was installing some programs. I looked at my start menu and saw that it was becoming cluttered so I right-clicked my mouse to sort the menu and nothing happened. By that I mean when I put the mouse cursor over an icon or program and rt-clk it I should get a menu with "sort" as one of the options. I don't get any pop-up window at all. When I point to a program or a start menu item and try to drag it from one position on the menu to another I don't see the icon/program being able to be moved. Any ideas?

XP Home Edition- System languages- MUI and LIP
by Guest Duncan999-- 2 replies

Hello, My laptop is set up in English for my benefit and I'd like to have it simultaneoulsy set up in Thai for my wife. Msinfo32.exe output at end. I've succeeded in changing the input language to Thai for her user account and she is able to use the on screen keyboard to correlate the english KB to a Thai one. I've also been able to download a language interface pack that unfortunately has the byproduct of changing the entire system language for all users to Thai, this is no good for me. In reviewing the MS KBase articles, it seems mostly clear that I need a professional version of the OS to get MUI functionality. One article shows that there's a…

Plus all my contacts has been lost and some of the setting are gone. Everything worked prior to my installing the AVG. Has anyone had a similar problem? If this is not a proper place to post this, would someone please let me know where I could post it, and get some help. If I need to uninstall and reinstall, where would be a good place to go for the download of 7.5., or the same ve…

Hi all. Windows XP Home SP3 I hope someone can help me out with this one: After installing Service Pack 3, I'm getting "Windows cannot find '(null)'. Make sure you typed the correct name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search" when I use the WinKey+E to open Explorer, and download torrents from beta.legaltorrents.com from within Firefox. I don't use Internet Explorer 7 that much. I have tried the reg key from windowsxp.mvps.org/ie/905915.htm, but that did not help. Can someone please give me an idea at least of what is going on with my poor XP ;)
