Windows XP installation disk gone bad?
by Guest Jonathan Sachs- 14 replies
I'm trying to reinstall Windows from my Windows XP installation DVD. It's not working. Windows boots from the DVD, then tells me that I need to put the DVD in the drive -- even though it is already there. Removing and replacing the DVD, jiggling it, cleaning it, etc., have had no effect. I've tried this with two different DVD drives (a brand-new internal drive and an older external drive which I have no reason to be suspicious of), so I'm pretty confident the drive is not the problem. That seems to be the only the disk, but all the system's other hardware is the same, and I'm concerned that something less obvious might be wrong. Three questions. First…

Problem opening a picture in an email
by Guest PT- 9 replies

I have two computers, each using Outlook Express 6 and WindowsXP Home. On each I tried opening a picture embedded in an email by right clicking the picture and selecting Save As. On computer 1, the file opens "Save Picture" and allows a normal save as JPEG. On computer 2, I get an error message. "Can't find the file specified". The help button identifies the missing file as c:\windows\sysyem32\mshtml.hlp I checked both computers' folders and find that each contains two files: mshtml.dll and mshtml.tlb. In other words, neither has the "missing" file. What's the explanation? -- PT

XP won't start, can't access Safe Mode
by Guest Howdego- 3 replies

Due to my own negligence, I think, I requested a download of XP, SP3 at the same time I asked for an update to the Microsoft software update program. Somewhere during the install process (I had walked away), my Dell E1505 Laptop crashed. I found a message that a ”problem has been detected, Windows has shut down and I should restart in Safe Mode” to clean out the programs I just added. After this restart failed from the message page, I tried to restart using the F8 command, selecting Safe Mode, XP Media Center OS. The response is a list of about 30 file paths like “multi(0)disk(0)partition(2)…etc”. After about 30 seconds, the screen changes to the o…

Strange Monitor Problem - maybe
by Guest blueman- 2 replies

I just finished setting up and installing programs in a new PC running windows XP. Something must have happened and the monitor screen went black. If I try to hit "reset" I can nothing seems to happen. I think the computer shuts down and restarts but the screen remains black The only way I can get the monitor to work (if it is the monitor) is to unplug the PC (when the screen is blank) and plug it back in. Once I have a screen and shut down normally using the start menu, the next time I try to start it up I get nothing but a black screen. I can't even tell if the PC is booting up or getting past the cmos boot up as the screen is black. I have tried a different…

Probem with copying to Memory stick
by Guest Tracy- 9 replies

I have a 1GB Scandisk memory stick and was attempting to download 340 pics amounting to approx 380MB's on to it from my Computer (XP) and when it was just about finished this message popped up- "Cannot copy DSC327: The Directory or file cannot be created." The photo that was not copied just happened to be the last photo of the 340. The rest were copyed just fine. I tried to copy again several times different photos on to the same memory stick with the 239 pics on it from another folder and got the same error message. One last attempt I tried to download the same photos onto a 2GB Memory stick and got the same message. I just cannot download any more pi…

How to block installation of Supplemental Language Support?
by Guest John Hupp- 0 replies
I found that Supplemental Language Support (files for complex script and right-to-left languages, and files for East Asian languages) and Input Method Editors (IME) were causing problems on one laptop here, so I uninstalled them via Control Panel: Regional and Language Options: Languages: clear the check-boxes for those two options. But today I found that the laptop was having problems again, and I found that the Supplemental Language Support had been reinstalled! I don't know how that happened, but how can I block/prevent a future reinstallation? --John Hupp

Desktop Disabled
by Guest molariu@keyassets.com- 6 replies

Hi all, I run WinXP+SP2 on an IBM notebook (Z770). I use Windows "classic" view. Recently I cannot use the Desktop anymore: 1- all icons (including the trash bin) are gone; 2- I cannot copy anything on the Desktop (drag & drop); 3- When I click Mouse-right-button I get the menu, but: - "Arrange icons by" selection opens a menu with all options disabled; - "properties" / Desktop allows only to change the color of the desktop; Background cannot be changed. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. Thank you, Mihai.
