SP3 failed when installing
by Guest J Tinsby- 7 replies

Seemed to take forever for it to get going but it finally got to where it says something like "checking registry" ot "modifying registry" at that point it stopped and gave me an abort install message. I was left with no choice but to uninstall the bleeding thing...THAT left me with a message saying XP has been modified but not completely and may not work properly. Thank you MS.. you dolts. The machine then rebooted on its own and gave me a blue screen saying it couldn't find a file... but then it did and it loaded after a long pause. It's working now but I am afraid to shut it off, I'm backing up the files I didn't have backed up prior to this fiasco. I don't…

Hi, I have win xp sp2. Can we use Vbscript to enter or schedule tasks to run on different timings in Windows own Task Scheduler facility? This is the scenario of my work: I have more than 50 computers at my work place; I want to use my Usb drive by using an Autorun file and a script to enter the same task to be scheduled on all the computers which will save me a lot of time; an example autorun file and example script code will help me a lot. Plz help me in this regard. Oc9ine.

Unzipping quirk
by Guest Terry Pinnell- 1 reply

This is no big deal but it's puzzling me and I'd like to fix it please. My \Downloads folder is very large because I keep all my downloaded setup files after installing them, even after uninstalling. So finding files in it is quickly is important. Most setups download as a ZIP, and the typical procedure I use is to keep the Downloads folder in Date Modified order, so the latest download, say xmplay342.zip, appears at the end, where I can immediately see it. The procedure is then: 1) Select xmplay342.zip, r-click and drag, choose Extract... 2) In 'Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard', click Next 3) In 'Select a destination', cl…

A friends computer will no longer play sounds. In Control Panel > Sounds I tried to play a wav file but the arrow was grayed out Trying to play a MP3 gets the message " windows media player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device there might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program or it might not be functioning properly" The comuter has an Asus motherboard with onboard sound. No soundcard installed. There are no problems showing in Device Manager I'm trying to determine if the problem is hardware or windows drivers / codecs. Any suggestions? All I can remember is how…

Established users changing to "new users"
by Guest Woodnwine- 0 replies

Hello, I have XP Pro, SP 2 with all updates. I use Avast, Spybot, and Adaware. I have one pc with 4 users set up with different logins. It has been this way for at least 2 years. Lately, two users profiles have defaulted to "new users". In other words, all setting have vanished and when logging in to one of those two users, it appears as if you are setting up a user for the first time. I go into Explorer and can see the original user, with all files in tact, but the user isn't pointing to the settings. I have created new users and copied all of the old settings to the new users and this will "fix" the problem. But recently, this happened a sec…

Hi, Didn't find any reference to the following error I'm getting when installing XP SP3. The installation complains about installing the beethov9.wma file saying it couldn't copy the file. The path that it is using does indeed contain the file. Retry just repeats the error. I went through the install 3 times. Tried searhing for this error in technical support with no luck. Any suggestions?

Major ntdll.dll problem... upgrading XP
by Guest Thales- 1 reply
Hello, I have this major problem with my Windows XP Home. About 2 and a half years ago I tried upgrading to SP2, and I was never able to make it happen. I kept getting the blue screen of death. So, I just kept it at SP1, and the computer worked fine. Recently I was put in a situation where SP2 was required. So, I have a copy of Windows XP Pro, with SP2, and I was going to upgrade. Well, in the process of doing this I got the following error, with the same blue screen of death: > > "STOP: C0000221 Unknown Hard Error > \systemRoot\system32\ntdll.dll" > I found that others had this same problem as well. I swapped out IDE cables…

by Guest Corky D- 4 replies

I was advised to try this group. I have a client who has SBS 2003 r2. On the VP's workstation, he downloaded a cutesy screen saver. Then he removed it. Damage done! He now cant remote into his workstation. Error message is that the local policy wont permit it! I have logged on locally as admin and cant turn off windows firewall (greyed out), which somehow got turned on. Ran all the virus and spyware scans. Nothing. The remote exception is enabled. I think I might have to wipeout his workstation and re-install. Not what I want to do. Any suggestions? Thank You, Corky

XP - SP3
by Guest ~BD~- 1 reply

From PC Pitstop:- On Wednesday, May 7th 2008, Microsoft released the long awaited Windows XP SP3. Almost immediately hundreds of users registered complaints ranging from complete crashes to looping reboots. Similar problems have accompanied previous service packs and are usually the result of conflicting software. Now, a few days later, it's known that many of the reports are specific to HP Computers with AMD processors. Copies of Windows intended for Intel-based machines were used by OEMs on AMD-based computers. According to Microsoft the blame sits squarely on HP and possibly other OEMs Jesper Johansson, a well respected MVP in Windows Security, has been …

Unable to Enable Automated Updates in Services
by Guest GNM- 2 replies
After updaing my PC's with the SP3 I am consistently getting the red shield telling me to turn on my automated updates. This is true as well with Onecare making the same statement. The SP3 also has deleted my restore history making it now impossible to restore to a certain point any longer. I now have to setup a new restore point which really pisses me off. Even after the many and frustrating attempts to follow Microsoft Self-Help Options and Solutions I find that there is nothing short o a fix apparently. I have gone into the SERVICES and manually made the selections accordingly and all I get is: (1058 Automated Update Disabled and/or has no enab…

Hello all, I am running WinXp (updated and all) w/ Office 2003 (updated as well). I have my pc set so that I can switch between an English and French Keyboard. This has been functional for 3+ yrs and always worked perfectly. Recently, about 1 week now, when I switch to French my Keyboard configuration has changed and to me it seems to be greek pulling letters such as beta, capa,...? I don't know if this coincedental, but it is right around when I performed several updates both to windows and Office (SP3 + Hotfixes)??? Are there any known issues, and more importantly, any remedies to this issue? Thank you!
