by Guest j- 16 replies

will sp3 Windows XP Pro install CD/DVDs be available? (to install the whole OS, not just the service pack. I'm reluctant to try creating a slipstream one; I tried last month and killed my OS.) I'd love one, so I can do Repair Installs.

My computer gets very slow as the session goes on and among the suspects is Java. Can I run IE without Java? If I uninstall Java, can I get it again for free? How does Java gets loaded, as I can't see it in Services or Startup tabs of Msconfig? Is it loaded when I open a particular webpage? Thank you for your help JB

Dual Monitor Not Working
by Guest Richard K- 3 replies

I am running Windows XP Pro trying to set up a dual monitor. I have a video card that supports dual monitors (display settings show 1 and 2). What I get is 2 monitors with both showing the same thing and not an "extended" screen. When I go into the 2nd monitor and select the check box for "extended desktop" then close or apply the check box becomes unchecked (won't save the changes). What am I doing wrong here? Could it be the cable I have that is Doing the splitting but instead is just showing a copy image to both monitor monitors? Thanks! -Richard K

Hi... I`ve been doing some work on Norton problems as instructed by Norton Help center, and during that, i `ve made some mess, cause now, every time I turn on my PC or try to open some Office file, it runs Windows Installer for installing some ccCommon file and it can`t be found, so it displays an error message 1706. How to fix this problem? Tnx a lot!

Dear friends: Please, recommend me a good, cheap (or better free) and simple DVD player for XP. One with simple menus, I want to select the language of subtitles, for example, but no more sophistication. I don't want to pay US$ 69 for Corel's WinDVD. Thanks a lot. Any hint? Thanks Juan I. Cahis Santiago de Chile (South America) Note: Please forgive me for my bad English, I am trying to improve it!

by Guest Barry- 1 reply

I installed the latest update to iTunes. Now, when I connect my IPod to my PC, I get the following error message: "There was a problem installing this hardware-apple IPOD USB driver-An Error Occurred During the Installation of this device. The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request." I have searched for an updated driver, but I keep getting the same error message as above. The iPod shows up in device manager, but with a yellow exclamation point next to it. It says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)." I've also reinstalled the driver.cab file from my Windows installation disk, but none o…

XP home. I am seeing a strange thing... I have recently found two files on the root of C; One is called vcredist X86.log and the other is HCPSTool.log. They are both text files and appear to have been recording some file activity. I'm pretty sure I've never had this before. What are they all about please?

System Volume Information
by Guest Bobbi- 5 replies

I've received a message from my anti-virus program that a "potentially unwanted program" is located in my System Volume Information folder, but I've been denied access to that folder by the system so I can't remove it manually. Apparently my antivirus and antispyware programs can't either. Is there a way to get access? I think restores points are stored there. Bobbi

Recover XP
by Guest Dig- 2 replies

I have a WinXP problem. Even if I try to boot in safe mode i get a blue screen. I have the orig cd but it takes me to choices. 1 of them is to the recovery console. Going there does not seem to afford me any help that I can see. The other is to reinstall. Which I really do not want to do because there are things in the program that I need to keep. So..how can I use recovery console to "recover" my XP without losing everything? Or...is there another way of installing XP without a major loss?? Any help appreciated. Thanks

How to check if CPU is 32-bit or 64-bit
by Guest Avatar- 3 replies
Is there a utility that can check whether the CPU in any PC is 32-bit or 64-bit capable? AMD labels its CPUs as 64 (almost all they make) but one has to delve into specs for an Intel CPU to check whether it is 64-bit capable. Many of the newer Intel CPUs are 64-bit but there is nothing in the name or quick-specs that identifies it as so. TIA Avatar -------

SP3 ( KB936929 ) Fails to install repeatedly
by Guest harvey- 4 replies

I have a vanilla Pentium 4, ( i Gig RAM, ATI Sq 250 PCI card) running Windows Sp2 repeatedly, SP3 tries to install, then fails with no warning message. It then goes through an elaborate de-install only to repeat this process. In frustration I wonder: 1:) Why was this shipped in such a cryptic format, leaving the user up in the air as to what went wrong? 2:) formatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows is not an option. 3:) Is there a patch for SP3 being readied so that some sort of error log is produced ? 4:) Is SP3 really necessary ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks ( Sent From the Ubuntu Side of my PC)
