XP Pro Upgrade Validation Failure
by Guest Joel Chambers- 1 reply

I've just upgraded 20 XP Home systems to XP Pro using the upgrade, not the full version, and now anytime I try to access Windows functions that require validation (i.e. Windows Updates, etc...), it failes to validate as a genuine product. I ordered these upgrade licenses directly from Microsoft Licensing Corp. Any ideas?

by Guest travdaddy- 0 replies

I've integrated several Security updates. The batch file below is what I use for integrating to the z drive. Every patch is integrated except for the last one. KB944653. Is this a known issue that this patch cannot be integrated? Or is there a work around. I'm releasing a unattended install to a company by the end of the week and any information would be great. c: cd updates WindowsXP-KB937894-x86-ENU.exe /integrate:z: /q WindowsXP-KB941568-x86-ENU.exe /integrate:z: /q WindowsXP-KB941569-x86-ENU.exe /integrate:z: /q WindowsXP-KB941644-x86-ENU.exe /integrate:z: /q WindowsXP-KB941693-x86-ENU.exe /integrate:z: /q WindowsXP-KB942615-x86-ENU.exe /integrate:z…

Offline Files incorrectly in Offline mode
by Guest dcarfan- 0 replies
Hello, We are running standard Windows XP SP2 in a 2000 AD environment. Periodically our XP clients offline files state goes into offline mode when no change has occured in the network connection speed. Once this starts, the offline files state switches to "offline" throughout the day even after being synchronized. All of our systems are connected together via a cisco gigabit switch. The behavior persists even though we've replaced cabling, client hardware, reimage client, and replaced the core switch. Given all of this, it seems to be related to the file server that houses the file shares. Does anyone know what I can do to resolve this? …

Strange Folders in Docs & Settings
by Guest Delores- 0 replies
We change the password for one of our users. When he logged in, all of his desktop icons were missing. In addition to this, when we looked at the folders in Explorer, there were multiple folders named as follows: _0X00AC, _0X00F4, so forth and so on. Similar folders were also in All Users, Administrator, and his user folders. Has anyone seen this before? What caused it? I'm thinking that we should rename his old profile on that computer and create a new one. Any other suggestions? Thanks

question about winXP installation
by Guest Jeff- 10 replies

hey My boss has a winXP CD, which he copied the contents of onto a ftp server. I'm asked to download the files and burn them on a CD (or maybe a DVD) and boot my computer on that CD and start installation of winXP I don't think this will work. I will use Nero Burning Rom to burn the the files into the CD., it copies all the files, but is NOT making the cd bootable as bootsector is not in a file.... My boss said also that if I cannot boot from the CD, then I just start my computer. (it already got winXP, but it need a reinstallation.) Open Explorer and start installation of winXP from within WinXP Is this possible? I doubt it is possible, would be …

Open .RTF files in a new window
by Guest Greg- 9 replies
Hi, I need to modify the XP registry so that when a user clicks on a link to an RTF document it opens up Microsoft Word in a different window. The catch is that I don't want any other Word extensions to be opened in a new window (i.e. If a user clicks on a .doc document, it will open up in the same window). I have been playing with the BrowserFlags registry setting and have added it to the HKCU\Software\Class\Word.RTF.8 key without success. Any help would be appreciated. Kind Regards Greg

FTYPE doesn't work as per docs
by Guest Sal- 3 replies
The cmd prompt command FTYPE doesn't work as per the "/?" help documentation. It says that if you type the command with an associated file type, it will delete the open command string for that file type. But it doesn't work. For example, if I enter: C:\>FTYPE FileType= Where FileType equals any associated file type, it returns: File type 'FileType' not found or no open command associated with it.

Can I inhibit Windows Automatic Update for other users on my PC
by Guest Martin C- 3 replies
I have a PC which has 3 users. My user id has admin priviliges as I am the main user. One user has limited priviliges, but for complicated reasons, the last user also has admin priviliges to allow her to run certain things. What I am after is a possible way so that only I receive notification of Windows Updates. Is this possible? I have WinXP Home SP2 with Windows Updates set to "notify me but dont automatically download and install". I have it set to this so I can investigate the updates before deciding to install straight away. Unfortunately, this means that the 'updates are available' balloon keeps nagging the other user. Thanks for any help you c…

Windows Installer Problem (Running XP3)
by Guest E. Barry Bruyea- 3 replies
About a week after installing XP3, I have a problem with the 'Windows Installer' window popping up, trying to install Office Ultimate 2007, or Roxio 7, or Cyperlink, or One Touch (a diabetes control program). The choice seems to be random and I have to hit 'cancel' several times before it quits. All of theses programs have been installed for some time and I have not installed any other programs since the XP3 update, nor have I made any other changes in the setup of my computer. Any help getting rid of this annoyance would be appreciated.

I have a problem with off line files I've check MS Help Article ID : 275461 and triple checked permissions but get the follow error. COM1 woes

Hi folks Sorry if I'm in the wrong group here, but I Googled for a problem I had with COM1 and found the answer from a MoeGreen after much headbanging, it proved to be the right answer. But here is something which I think is impossible ... I have two devices which send data to a PC. Both 9600,N,8,1, both work on one PC. On the other PC, only one of them works. I could understand if both or neither did, but how can it be that one works and one doesn't? XP Pro SP 2, laptop, Clevo motherboard, Intel P4, COM1 is a standard port with the FIFOs switched off. TIA Marv

XP shutdown Explorer.exe problem
by Guest Ken Pryor- 7 replies

Hello, I have a Dell Inspiron 530 that belongs to a friend. It's running XP Pro and has 3gb ram. Nearly every time you shutdown, reboot or log off, this error pops up: "Explorer.EXE-Application Error The instruction at 0x01359430 referenced memory at 0x01359430. The memory could not be written." (The memory address changes from one time to the next) I have searched till I can't see straight and can't find the solution to this. I've run chkdisk, defragged and also sfc but to no avail. I have removed all unnecessary items from startup and services in msconfig, but the problem still exists. Any guidance on resolving this would be greatly apprec…

Task Scheduler privilege problem?
by Guest Peter- 3 replies
Hi, I have a batch file (.bat) which contains an XCOPY command, to copy files from one PC to another on the workgroup at 17:00 every day. The batch file works perfectly when run manually (from the DOS box). However when I activate the batch file from the task scheduler, the AT command, it runs OK (as evident from some other stuff in it) but the XCOPY command never gets run or, more precisely, the files never get copied over. Both PCs have the same login/pwd combination for the login (an administrator login), so there is automatic login when doing any manual file copy ops etc. However the task scheduler is running under some sort of local account and …

Grouping Word Documents
by Guest Erik R- 1 reply
I was wondering if there was any way to group a set of word documents, and then define properties for the set as a whole. For example, it would be nice to be able to specify a project name and number in one place, and then refer to it in each of the project documents using fields. That way, if the name or number changed, it would automatically update each document. Any thoughts? It seems like Word should have this capability, but I can't find a way to do it.

Every time I have attempted to download a music file or any larger sized file since installing SP2, my download stops receiving data and the file manager just sits there stuck at usually 20% or so downloaded. Is there something in SP2 that limits the size of files downloaded or some adjustment that I need to make? This has been going on for months now. I have scanned for viruses and spyware and everything comes back clean. PLEASE HELP!!! I am going bonkers with this?

Hi, when trying to start up my wifes Laptop (Toshiba) into Win XP Pro the display alternates between "Loading your personal settings" ,"Saving your personal settings" and 'Loggin off" with just a few seconds between ON and OFF, continually until emergency-stopped. I never had any trouble for the past 2 years. Apparently this was caused after un-installing McFee's Security setup. How can I get out of this and perhaps try "System Restore? WinXP Home SP3
by Guest BudV- 2 replies

I use Automatic Update. I was notified about SP3 and installed it without any problems. My daughter's machine is the same configuration as mine (except she has not installed IE7 yet) but she hasn't received any notice about SP3. For what it's worth, the Microsoft Update website "knows" that she uses Automatic Update. Executing the check for latest updates just loops. Any comments?
