computer change

I have a HP computer with a Pentium II (800 HZ) processor running Win XP Pro and I was given a Dell with a Pentium IV (2.4 GHz) processor running Win XP Home. I put the Hard drive from the HP into the Dell to use the faster processor and the info on the Hard drive. I set the BIOS to boot first from the HD and disabled the floppy and CD. After the computer goes through the BIOS I get a cursor in the upper left corner of the monitor, I let it flash for 4 hours (left it thinking it was looking at the system) but it never booted. I have tried setting the HD to Master, Single and Cable Select all with the same results. I cannot get the HD from the HP computer t…

Holy BLOAT! 1 2 3

I was wondering why my new Vista system would only hold eight restore points. I recently used up that space very quickly when I installed a bunch of my old programs that I used in XP. Turns out that my Vista restore points are about TWO GIGS EACH, compared to 200mb each in my old XP system. By default, Vista appears to allocate a maximum size of 15% of the drive's total space for restore points. Or it might be a fixed number, I'm not sure. On my system disk, it's currently a tad over 16 gigs. That much space would've stored 80 restore points in XP! To change that space allocation requires some command line hoop jumping, rather than just moving a slider…

Windows System Restore Problems
by Guest Ron- 9 replies
I believe that I have a problem and I wanted to run System Restore to go back to a point before I started noticing the problem. Every time I launch System Restore, it tells me that my computer cannot be restored to that restore point. I have tried every one and none of them work. I even ran the Microsoft Malicious Software removal tool(which found 24 files with issues including some of the system restore point files). What can I do at this point?

System takes forever to load and fill in icons on destop WHY?
by Guest J Tinsby- 5 replies
A friend recently formatted his HD and re installed XP Pro, there are only about 20 or less processes running. Yet when he boots up, it takes a long time for the icons on the desktop to fill in and the taskbar is all blue. Finally after the icons fill in, then the taskbar starts to fill in a section at a time from left to right. Once all this is done, he tells me the system seems to run fine and isn't sluggish. He's run virus scanners, spyware programs SFC and defrag etc all to no avail. He does have SP3 installed but the system had this trouble prior to the install. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance to all who reply! J T

Random crashes - please help?
by Guest thx1138xxix@yahoo.com- 7 replies

Hello, I was hoping someone in here could help me with a problem I've been having with my computer crashing. I'm not ~exactly~ sure when this all started, but it was well over a year ago (my computer is about 4 years old). About every 30 days or so my computer would just restart. I didn't think much of it since it only happened about once a month. But then it started happening more often. So I turned off the auto-restarts and started looking at the BSOD's and sending error reports to Microsoft. The BSOD's weren't always the same.. I'd get anything from DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, PAGEFAULT_IN_A_NON_PAGED_AREA, or something else. And it's VERY random! S…

Strange thing when shutting down
by Guest Jack McAfee- 1 reply

When I went to shut down my machine, and I get the window with the icons for Standby, TurnOff, Restart, there is a message below that states: " Click on Turnoff to install updates or click on this to install without turning off". I had just finished running the Windows Update Program to download some updates. Before, I always get an icon on the taskbar telling me that the Updates have been download. By habit, I always do a manual updating of Windows. No such icon now appears on the taskbar. Is it kosher that I would only install the updates on shutdown, or have I picked up some malicious software. Does anybody know anything about this? Mac

XP Home: Any settings for speeding up my PC ?
by Guest Mr. Low- 11 replies

Dear Sir, I am using a Dell Pentium 4 PC with RAM of 520MB. However I noticed that the response time for launching a software such as MS Word or Ms Work Spreadsheet is pretty slow. Comparatively, at the work place, I used a Pentium 3 PC with Wondow 2000 Server OS, the eswktop application could be launch much faster. I carried out routine system eminence such as running disk clean up, Check and Repair Disk Error, Window Defender, Window Updates., but not much improvement was noticed. May I know if XP Home is design to run at this speed ? Is there any changes in the XP Home setting I could make to enable it to run faster ? or is there any MS …

Keyboard typing wrong characters after docking station problem
by Guest Shannon Cayze- 0 replies
Hello all, I have a wireless keyboard and mouse attached to a docking station. At one point the laptop was bumped and became detached from that docking station. Windows was locked up so I did a hard reboot. At that point the keyboard stopped typing the correct characters. Many of them type nothing at all and the others are all incorrect. For example, pressing 'f' types a hyphen, pressing the left arrow types an 'm', pressing '7' on the keypad just gives a loud beep, and so on. I checked the language that the keyboard was setup to use and it's still set to the standard English - US language. I switched docking stations and the problem still occurred. I then t…

What is this registry root key value?
by Guest Sal- 1 reply
Root key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT has the value: ab(default) REG_SZ PHP File None of the other root keys have a value (value not set). Can someone explain what this key value means? I have a feeling it's related to some problems I've been having with the .php file extension which I set with the following cmd line commands: assoc .php=PHPScript ftype PHPScript="C:\php\php.exe" "%1" %* If I try to break the association with ftype PHPScript= I get an error: "File type 'PHPScript' not found or no open command associated with it." I realize I can just go into the registry and delete the key, but I like to understand what I'm doing first.
