SP3 - Access is denied
by Guest Pieter- 8 replies

Hi, I receive this "Access is denied"-error when trying to install the Service Pack 3 for Windows XP. When trackign down the error in the svcpack.log (see udnerneath), it has apparently something to do with missing rights on my registry, which is quit bizar because I am Administrator on my machine. I gave my user explicit full control on my registry, but I still have this error. Does anybody has any idea how to fix this problem? Thanks a lot in advance, Pieter The last lines of the log-file: 1318.578: DoInstallation: Installing assemblies with source root path: c:\3734fad498122e8c3bd8d81bbecbbf7d\i386\ 1327.063: PruneCatalogsFromHotfixes:Reg…

Genuine Windows failure-can't logon
by Guest Bruce Wilkinson- 9 replies
A client has a system that had been getting warnings something like "you may be the victim of software counterfeiting" with prompts to Get Genuine. I was cleaning it up from a virus infection and discussed this with him. It's a rather long and ugly story. The bottom line, he can't find his original CD. His case doesn't have a Windows product key on it either. I was looking for a second hand copy of XP Home, but before we got this resolved the system locked us out. His account now has a password. It didn't before. I'm assuming it's Genuine Windows that caused the lockout since trying to causes a Logon Message dialog, "Unable to log you on because of an acco…

by Guest torbar- 6 replies

I have tried to install SP 3 twice and it has hung both times. The progress bar makes it as far as the "y f" in your files in the message. I downloaded SP 3 andd created a cd from which the installs have been run. The install proceeds normally and some where between 2-3 hours it asppearts to be hung at the prior comment point. I reviewed the "Steps to take" doc and all information in that doc does not apply. I looked in the Event log and discovered an Event id 1002. Hanging app iexplore.exe v 7.0.6000.16440 Hung module hungapp v 0.0.0.0 address 0x00000000 I started Task Manager for the second instance and noted that System idle used 99% CPU, SP 3 s…

I have checked the *.host file, and didnt see any malicious movement in those files nor any blocks nor any redirections. I also unistalled IE+7, and returned to IE6 but the problem still seem to be sticked with it as well. I posted this entry to Internet Explorer newsgroup (however did…

Windows Update High CPU use KB947801 resolved
by Guest SageAdvice- 0 replies

On two of my client's PCs installing the Office 2007 converter caused the update service to deliver KB947801 (Office 2007 patch but applies to ofther version of office too) on the next boot. The next boot after that Windows Updates kicks in and uses 50+% continuously making the system very unresponsive. Turning off Automatic updates stops this on next boot but turning it back on immediately resumes the problem. There is no Internet activity associated with thsi and intermittany hard disk activity. Process Explorer shows svchost running for the Windows Update service. I resolved this by installing KB927891 hotfix and then re-installed Windows Update 3.0 …

Bad_System _Config_Info
by Guest DenisP- 3 replies

When trying to start my computer I am getting the following message. It will not boot up in safe or any other mode. Bad_System _Config_Info STOP 0x00000074 (0x00000003, 0x00000002, 0x80083000,0xC000014C)) And that the RAM may be damaged. My Dell Intel based XP Media Edition Service Pack 2 computer has been downloading some automatic update for a few days on and off (I have dial up) I noticed it was getting near 100% last time I looked. Maybe this update was SP3 and has caused some problem. I have changed to Ram but this error is still coming up. Has anyone came up against this before. Thanks

notebook errors
by Guest John- 7 replies

I have a laptop user who complains about "many errors". They don't seem to be one common specific error, but more random. Its an XP pro machine, with office 2007S/B. Many of his complaints seem to center around office errors, but could be due to adobe acrobat 8 std. It seems Adobe is involved in the errors. The user has an 80Gb hd and keeps around 30Gb of stuff in my docs. Also he has a 8.5 Gb outlook pst file. I have run the pst scan on the pst a couple times and it usually finds errors... This created backups of the pst so space was becoming tight. He doesn't seem willing to cut back on any of the 8.5Gb. But I have gotten the impression when the…

multiboot
by Guest get52shorty- 6 replies

I am wondering if it is possible to remove an operating system from a multiboot system. I had windows xp crash on me and when doing a system restore was plagued with errors. I ended up setting up a multiboot system with the original windows xp showing up as the default operating system at startup but not able to start as a file is missing or corrupt. How do I get rid of the original messed up XP? By the way the secondary Windows XP works just fine but I always have to select it at startup before the 3 second timer runs out. -- shorty

Help- system won't boot after sp3 failure
by Guest Bill- 1 reply
During install of sp3 after about 1/2 hour of install received message saying access denied. The system then procedded to remove files which never seemed to complete. Then received a message saying system may not work and system proceeded to reboot. Booting failed. Opened system is safe mode twice and tried restoring to the last two set points. Each system restore took about 30 min and system is still dead and will not move beyond black scrren with xp logo. Is there any hope of recovery short of a system recovery?
