Rundll32
by Guest Peter- 3 replies

I have a very slow computer and I am investigating Rundll32.exe. I found it in the right places: C:\Windows\System32 and again in C:\Windows\Dllcache, both with 33,280 bytes; and then again in c:\I386 but here with 11,075 bytes. Should they not be all the same? If so, which is the right one? I have XP Home SP3 on a Toshiba laptop satellite 1900-303 Many thanks JB

CD key not valid after slipstreaming sp3
by Guest Wildprairie- 5 replies

I am trying to upgrade a laptop with an oem mce 2004 system. I have an older version xp pro upgrade disk and when I try it, I get a message that the installed version is newer than the one I am trying to install. I slipstreamed sp3 into the disk and now it is willing to make the upgrade, but then says my cd key is not valid. FYI concerns about piracy: The xppro disk was on a P3 that I salvaged for parts. It will be on only 1 machine. PS: When I start a clean install with the original disk it does accept the key that came with it. I also tried all the keys in the pid.inf and the unattend.txt files.

fax
by Guest Nate Rosenthal- 1 reply

I am having difficulty adding a few components to my computer. I have XP and had it up to SP3. I have cleaned things by unistalling and removing through Add/Remove. Included in this were all the updates along the way over the past five years. For example in trying to add fax service, it is asking for my CD of SP3. I don't have that, only the original CD. I am guessing that I may have deleted some important files in previous updates. Should I be going to Microsoft's website to reinstall updates that go all the way back? Should I reinstall SP3 or even go to SP2 and then SP3. Any thoughts

disabling the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security
by Guest JayDee- 1 reply

has anyone come up with a way to disable the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security through either a Global Policy GPO or by changing a registry key which can be implemented as a custom GPO? If we want to uninstall using ADD/REMOVE as suggested, I believe we will have to do it through a machine script which I'm trying to avoid. Thanks - JayDee

Networking Question
by Guest TwistedPair- 3 replies

Hi Everyone, I have a Windows desktop that is joined to the domain, but it won't process group policies. Now before you refer me to the Group Policies group, I have to mention that I've done some troubleshooting, and I've found that it's a problem with the network card. It comes on the network after the computer starts processing group policy stuff. I know this because I'm watching it boot up, and I have a continuous ping window open and I can see when it's live on the network, and when it isn't. It's not supposed to do that. Can any of you help me? Thank you!

warning registry activity

Hi, recently I made a big mistake and wanted to tell others so they would not suffer the same fate I did. I saw programs saying they could speed up my computer and optimize performance by checking the registry and fixing problems. Programs such as Reg Cure and Spy Bot search and destroy. I used these programs and they messed up my computer bad. The registry is basically a database of files and has nothing to do with speed I learned later. Microsoft reccomends only advanced users alter it and MS has their own editing program for advanced users. Windows has buil in tools to speed up your computer which are reliable and safe. See this article: http://…

My laptop features are; winXP pro, SP3, intell Core 2, with 2.49GB of Ram and I use ie7. I do have other browsers installed on my laptop, such as Mozilla F.Fox and Safari from Apple. Lately ie7 has not been working for watching web video's, from youTube, or Yahoo, or MSN. I receive an error message that says "need to update your flash player", so I've dowoloaded the latest flash player [ver.9] as well as latest shockwave player and I also made sure to get the latest updates from Microsoft, adobe, and updated the java program to the latest version as well. But still the video's just won't play using ie7. The same videos work just fine using Fire fox or Safa…

cdroms won't read
by Guest Joe T- 2 replies

I have 2 cd-roms. According to the device manager these are working properly. No exclaimation marks. 1. D: drive is standard cd-rom drive/F5B. Put disk in and get flashing red/green light. 2. E: drive is Cendyne_522452AX. Put disk in and get green light but no loading. 3. Only E: drive will ONLY read my ATI utility disk. Both drives will not read any other disk. XP disk, Office 2003, motherboard disks etc. 4. Uninstalled both through device manager. Add hardware. Both returned to same condition. 5. Problems started same day as network connection problem. I fixed that. 6. Can't do XP repair with disk because cd-roms won't read.

Cannot Complete the CD Writing Wizard
by Guest Skippybox- 14 replies

I am trying to write 695MB of files to a 701MB CD-RW using the CD Writing Wizard. I have the files in the CD Burning folder, which I currently have on my D:\ drive. I also have the D:\ drive selected under the Recording tab as the place to have Windows store an "image" of the CD to be written. My D:\ drive has about 5.99GB of free space and my C:\ drive has about 599MB of free space. So, according to my configuration I would figure I could write the CD-RW under these conditions. However, when I attempt to write the CD-RW, the wizard proceeds to prepare the image, but my free space on C:\ whittles down to almost nothing. Eventually, I get the error: C…

DCOM Question - Remove Entries
by Guest NvrBst- 0 replies
dcomcnfg.exe > Component Services > Computers > My Computer > DCOM Config I see some entries here that shouldn't be there anymore. For example there is a "TestDCOM.exe" which I remember playing with a few month ago, but that exe has long been deleted, yet still shows up here. My problem is that the "X" (delete) button is greyed out. I am loged in as administrator. I know that if I do "RegSvr32.exe /u TestDCOM.exe" for example, it removes the entries from the above list. If I don't have TestDCOM.exe anymore is there another way to remove it? Thanks, NB
