DVD-RW shows up as CD Drive in Windows Explorer (WinXp)
by Guest Wisconsin Help?- 17 replies

Hey Gang, Long time reader, first time poster.... I normally would consider myself relatively computer saavy, however, I've got a problem that I haven't been able to fix... even after a complete and destructive WinXp Re-install. I have 2 DVD Burners, one an external DVD burner and the other is a brand new Sony DRU-190A that are both showing up as CD Drives in Windows Explorer. However, with Nero, they show up as DVD Burners/Drives. I am running Win Xp Media Center 2005 with a new, clean install. I need to fix this because I use the Media Center software to record shows during the week for work and from what I've been able to read, only Media …

Share folder on corporate network, can't find on other end
by Guest BlueWolverine- 1 reply

Hello, So for various reasons, the best way I can share this one file with several co-workers is to a share a file off my hard drive. We are all on the same network and anytime they'd need it my computer would be on. I was able to use Windows built in help to "Share the folder" with my co-workers but once on their machines I could not figure out how to go find the shared folder. I have a feeling I need an IP Address, and if so, you'll need to tell me how to find it. So how can I get this shared folder so that everyone can see it and access it? I am running Windows XP Pro as are all my co-workers. Thank you -- BlueWolverine MSE - Mech. Eng. …

Checkdisk kiss of death
by Guest jpmiguel2@gmail.com- 8 replies

When I rebooted my PC today Checkdisk started scanning my drive and in the process got frozen before ending. After another restart it appears a message saying that Windows didn't start successfully, and it gives me five options: three safe modes, last known good configuration, and start windows xp normally. In safe mode it begins listing files under MULTI(0)DISK(0)RDISK(0)PARTITION(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\... and it always stops at GIVEIO.SYS. Bellow that shows the following message: "press ESC to hold loading A347BUS.SYS". Pressing ESC or any other key starts the system all over again. Starting normally or last known good configuration it gets to the Windows XP …

Windows Time Problem
by Guest Mike950- 6 replies
Recently my Windows Date and Time has been acting up. I set the date and time and within four or five hours the time is wrong. Example: "At 1pm I set the time as 1:00 pm. By 5pm the Windows time displays 3:35, almost an hour and a half late. If I don't check it for a day or two, it actually shows the date and time as some time on the previous day. Is this a CMOS battery problem or something else. If it were a Cmos battery problem, wouldn't I be having boot problems (ie: error and boot to BIOS?). Thanks for the help. PS: I thought I posted this this morning but it didn't show up.

I have recently installed a clean copy of XP onto a machine with 2 hard drives, one is the C: drive with 2 other partitons D: & E: The 2nd hard drive is completly blank and just formatted. The problem is windows has installed on the C: Drive, but the 2nd hard drive is listed as the system disk in the device manager and C: is the boot drive. when I boot with recovery coucel and try to fixmbr it states that windows is installed on F:\windows (Which is the 2nd hard drive). Any ideas on how to change the "system drive" to the C:\ (boot) drive?

I reloaded XP PRO on my Dell 810 twice with the same result. After install of SP3, I tried installing other updates but windows update fails and says another automatic update is pending and has to complete first. At this point svchost.exe eats 100% cpu and can only be fixed by stopping the automatic update service. I tried rebooting, waiting overnight but the same result. Any clues on how to clear this problem?

by Guest Charlie Bress- 1 reply

The OS is XP Pro. There are two user accounts: me and she. The problem: when she tries to access a picture that was just sent to "my pictures" or one on her desk top the following message pops up. "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" and the system hangs. Process explorer shows that "my pictures is not responding. Looking at the details has: AppName explorer.exe ModVer 5.1.2600.3119 AppVer 6.0.2900.3156 Offset 0012a5b ModName kernel32.dll But if I log on to my account and go to "my computer" and approach the same file via "docs & settings" and onward to her "my pictures folder", then the jpg picture file opens with no di…

If wrong groups please advise. If you 'force' standby via Start/Turn Off Computer/Standby will the Hibernate setting in Control Panel/Power Options/Standby (Ex: Hibernate after 2 hours) still kick in. I have tried testing but I can't tell if it is waking up from Standby or Hibernate. Win XP sp2 Thanks

Difference Start/Turn Off/Standby VS Power Options Standby
by Guest livetohike- 0 replies

If wrong groups please advise. Is there any difference between going to sleep via method A and B (below): Method A: Start/Turn Off Computer/Standby Method B: Control Panel/Power Options/Standby (Ex: Standby after 15 minutes) The reason I ask is that I am having trouble w/ USB Flash drives. Using method A and waiting a while before waking up causes the drive to be unavailable until unplug and replug it in. It is visible in Explorer but you can't read/write to it. Using method B: The drives seem to work OK the next morning. The drives are plugged in to a powered USB hub. Win XP sp2 Thanks

I have a strange situation.. PC Info: AMD X2 4800+, 300gb Seagate SATA drive, 4 gb mem (2 sets dual channel), XP Media Edition. HD partitioned 4 drives (C & D - Fat32, E & F - NTFS) My PC froze last week and I had to press (Ugh!) the reset button. After it rebooted, it went into CHKDSK (which I expected), but it scanned my D Drive first, then went to C, and froze at 30%. After a while I finally reset it again and this time it scanned C: first and finished and then stated that it couldn't check D:, because D: was not an XP drive. My system starts (very, very slowly) and runs (very very slowly), and my D: drive is listed, but not accessi…
