Hello, I have a Laserjet Printer with USB interface connected directly to local USB port on XP Professional computer. The computer reports that the printer is "Not Online". I first disconnected the USB cable from selected printer and then I deleted the selected print from the print folder and then went into File>Server Properties and deleted the specific print driver associated with this specific local printer. I rebooted the computer download new driver software from manufactuer website. Upon installation of software, it prompts to connect USB cable and turn on printer. Compression and encryption
by Guest David Walker- 12 replies

I will be using a system that's running Windows XP Pro (SP3) as a backup target, probably using an FTP server, to back up some home and work files -- the computer will be in a remote location (across town). I would like to have both encryption (in case the computer gets stolen) and compression active on the folders that the data gets backed up to. I would prefer not to Zip the files for various reasons (such as, I don't want to have to mass-unzip them in case the source computer loses a hard drive). I could tell Windows to compress the files that get written to the folder, and use a third-party folder encryption program, OR I could tell Windows to e…

Can't find autochk.exe on startup
by Guest Alberto- 4 replies
I am running Win XP Sp2 and I am getting a message that autochk.exe cannot be found so startup is skipping autocheck. I have used Windows Explorer and the Command line to find that it exists. I have checked my Registry and there isn't a key named "Bootexecute" that is mentioned in several documents and discussions. Should I create the key and enter "Autocheck autochk *" ?

Missing "System" file
by Guest Alberto- 9 replies
I have read and used the procedures outlined here to save my sanity when encoiuntering this problem of the missing "System" file. I appreciate everyone's posts. My question now is: Why this would happen so frequently (every 2 or 3 months)? My kids use it for iTunes and we all use it for digital cameras, I was wondering if the way we remove the devices from the USB ports is a problem, or is there a virus I am not aware of that could do this? I have scanned using two programs and I run an anti-spyware program which have come up with nothing. What should I be looking for? Thanks

I have a Dell which I am about top reformat. I have the XP2 Reinstallation Disk (Home Edition). It appears that when I begin reinstalling process that I will end up with 2 versions on the disk. Is that avoidable or do I have to just get rid of the first edition after re installing ? (There is nothing on Add Remove Progs.) Thanks.

connects to voip but not web pages
by Guest john westmore_______- 7 replies

our laptop with windows xp installed has suddenly stopped opening web pages. It is normally connected to the modem via a wireless adaptor. The belkin modem 'utility page' shows the modem as being connected to the internet. Connecting the lap top to the modem via a cable enables us connected to our voip phone, so something is getting through, but it still will not open web pages. Grateful for any advice, thanks.

How to change move on drag&drop in Windows Explorer
by Guest l.rehak@email.cz- 3 replies

When I want to select a folder and go there I have to use the left mouse button and double click. But sometimes I click sooner than the cursor is on the desired folder and the cursor movement meanwhile moves the near-by folder into the other one. Which could be a big problem in a business directory tree!! How can I change the default behaviour of the drag&drop with left mouse button in Windows Explorer? Any updated idea? I can not find any good advice on the Net..

Most Programs will not Execute
by Guest mabowden@hotmail.com- 4 replies

I have a PC running XP Home, SP2. It had many viruses and spyware on it which have now been cleaned up. But after booting and logging in as an administrator, most programs will not load. On icons such as Internet Explorer, Symantec AntiVirus, or Command prompt for example, clicking the icon results in the pop-up message "Choose the program you want to use to open this file", and a list of registered programs is displayed. Essentially, any .EXE file seems to have this program. But oddly enough, I can right-click most of these same programs, choose "Run As" and execute the program that way. For example, right- clicking Start - All Programs - Accessories - Co…

Sound
by Guest Unknown- 16 replies

A friend has no sound on his Compac desktop.. In control panel, systems, hardware, device manager, when sound and game controllers is expanded the sound driver is disabled. Right clicking to get the drop down menu has no 'enable' to put a check on and therefore cannot be enabled. I'm stumped. Anyone any idea? Bios setting?? Registry bad? Sound driver is latest version from manufacturer. This occurred when restoring system to state it was in when bought. Thanks!
