Hi, 100 students are allowed to use their notebook computers during an exam (but with no wired or wireless network to avoid intercommunications). However they need to printout their work before they leave the room. We have a few USB laser printers on roller tables, but how to roll out the printer drivers etc...? Creative suggestions welcome ;-) Jake

SP3 Issues
by Guest stosti- 19 replies

Morning, After applying SP3 to a fresh install of XP Pro SP2 Microsoft update no longer worked correctly. The updates download and try to install but fail. I found the problem discribed on a tech net forum. It existed in SP3 RC3. Microsoft says they corrected the issue. i assure you they did not. The SP3 RC3 fix still works. Once you do the following all is well again. regsvr32 wups2.dll This is no good. Regards, Scott

wireless networking
by Guest scottfmd- 3 replies

I recently upgraded my old 802.11b Intel wireless gateway router to a new Linksys WRT 54GS router and wireless adapters. My P4 desktop, which for years worked well with the Intel wireless gateway adapter and router, does not work. In fact, I have two XP computers in the same room with the same wireless adapter; one works (an older P3 that previously was not wireless), one doesn't. The P4 wireless PCI card is functioning and accesses the network, but will not access the internet. It appears that the computer cannot access the modem's IP address as the IP address and subnet mask keep coming up zeros. I am certain there is a problem in the XP wireless …

SP3 and Compaq XP MCE Killed normal booting
by Guest Canuck57- 4 replies

Well, applied XP3 and my XP would not boot. What a pita. Turns out to be an issue with AMD processors and the quality of SP3's patching. Managed to boot into safe mode and used another system to surf to find the answer. http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3276751&SiteID=17 Renaming intelppm.sys to intelppm.old fixed it for me. Fortunately I could get to safe mode to do this. Pass it on, SP3 does not appear to be AMD or Compaq friendly. Another poorly tested piece of Microsoft software. Microsoft ought to pull this ASAP and FIX IT. Or there will be a lot of crippled XP systems....AMD sells a lot of CPUs.... as does HP/C…

My Private Folder Not Accessible "Access Denied"
by Guest Digital Boy- 0 replies
I have been using the "My Private Folder" application since it was released by Microsoft in 2006. I know MS pulled it soon after, and I know it is not supported. However, I kept using it for my own personal use. Everything was going fine until yesterday, when I suddenly received the error message "C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\My Private Folder is not accessible. Access is denied" everytime I tried to open My Private Folder. I've uninstalled and re-installed the program, but it still keeps happening. I've also tried the suggestions in KB 308421 [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421] with no luck. Does anyone know why this suddenly happened? And wh…

I have 2 hard drives, on the original hard drive is Windows Media Center that HP had " added controls, it keeps doing stuff I dont want, that asside, I added a second drive and loaded xp pro on it, after I got it to run correctly I started to get bogged down with svchost.exe getting into a loop and keeping CPU cycles busy at about 50%, I believe it was caused when Microsoft update did not fully install something, reason I say that, it when I would do an end task on the svchost.exe and do an update request. it wud start all over. to resovle the svchost.exe problem I did a checkpoint restore. deleting Mouse drivers from DEVICE MGR
by Guest flavio- 1 reply

Hi folks, my mice have developed "hiccups". i use both a PS2 and USB mouse (the ps2 is hooked up to a shared KB/ mouse / monitor system that feeds 3 computers. never been a problem.) the USB is one of those optical mice with scroll-wheel. nice.) using both mice on my main XPpro box has never been an issue. last couple of days, my mice are "hiccuping" - this means, usually after engaging the mouse and clicking on a new item, the mouse pointer "jumps" about 3 inches to the left on my screen. bit annoying. thru the hardware panel, can I simply delete mice from the "Mice & Other Pointing devices" list, and XP will re-build the drivers on re-boot, or …

remote printers inaccessible after xp sp3 from windows update - id
by Guest davidei- 1 reply
Installed SP3 from windows update. Applications cannot print. Opened "Printers and Faxes". Dialog tries to connect to remote printers, then shows status as "unable to connect". Request properties for a printer and you are notified that the printer spooler is not running. But that service is on automatic and is already started. (Stopping and restarting it make no difference.) Pretty vanilla Dell system. Windows Live Onecare and Windows Home Server.

Welcome screen screensaver
by Guest mvgberg- 2 replies
XP with one limited, administrator and guest account. All three are set for the supplied "blank" screensaver after 5 minutes of idle. That is exactly what happens if logged in to a specific account. However, when the welcome screen is displayed the bouncing Windows XP logo screensaver kicks in. What controls the screensaver for the welcome screen? I would like the blank screensaver for the welcome screen as well. For a long time the blank screensaver came up when in welcome screen. Now it does not. I've checked all the screensaver settings and tried a restart to no avail. Thanks.

XP Pro Upgrade and SP3
by Guest Korbit- 5 replies
I've been using XP Pro for quite several years, but I've never really owned a copy, so I bought the Professional Upgrade Retail cause I plan on rebuilding my computer soon, and don't want to deal with issues arising from an invalid license. My question is, I want to slipstream SP3 onto my XP install disc. Is the process for this the same for the Upgrade edition as it is for the regular, or is there something special that I need to do? Also, I've been reading some conflicting info about SP3. Is it officially out yet? Or is it still RC2? Thanks, Korbit

Why Does WinXP Keep Installing A Screensaver????
by Guest Prisoner at War- 18 replies
Unfortunately, I've had a handful of occasions now where I've had to reinstall WinXP due to hard drive failure. Each time, and *inevitably* so, WinXP will sooner or later decide to "give" me a screensaver even though I always specify that I want no screensaver. I don't know how it happens, I don't know what triggers it, all I know is that eventually one day my screen is suddenly displaying the MS WinXP logo screensaver without my asking for it. What's going on, please?? I'm running WinXP SP2 on an old Pentium M laptop with 1GB of system RAM...moreover, I use my neighbors' unsecured WiFi for internet access but I have the OS' firewall turned on....

unable to ping by NetBIOS name
by Guest yawnmoth- 4 replies
I have two computers, both using NetBIOS. Let's say that their NetBIOS names are computerA (10.0.0.1) and computerB (10.0.0.2). I can ping computerB (with the NetBIOS name) from computerA without a problem, but when I try to ping computerA from computerB, it doesn't work. Yet ping 10.0.0.1 does. Any ideas as to why? computerA (10.0.0.1) is using DHCP, whereas computerB isn't, but I don't think that'd make a difference.

Installed SP 3 - no visible changes though. 1 2
by Guest JP- 26 replies

Downloaded and installed SP 3 without a hitch. Except for a prompt at reboot to turn on Automatic Updates (I do it manually), I did not see any visible functional changes at all. Did see more detailed explanations in Local Security Settings, however. After removing the uninstall files (made an image before and after) I found the total system size increase 'marginally' by less than 40 MB. This machine is always fully patched and up-to-date. Boot is a trifle faster now though! Regards. JP --
