Missing Icons in Control Panel
by Guest Sherry- 1 reply
OK, I assume my problem has happened to someone else and already answered in the posts, but I haven't found it so here goes, I think this started with the SP3 upgrade, which I have reversed (no shows XP, sp2). Half of my program icons for the control panel (sounds, mouse, display, printers) are in classic view the other half are in the category view. Real pain when trying to install or repair programs and hardware as one is in one view the other in the other view. Can someone PLEASE help me get all of these back on both views. I have tried another system restore, but keep getting the message that my computer cannot be restored and nothing has been changed.…

"System Restore" VS "Scanreg /Restore"
by Guest Brad- 2 replies
Hi, Not long ago, I purchased a WinXP home edition laptop from Dell. In the past, when my Windows 98se computer didn't act "normal", I usually "fixed" the problem with this command in real Dos mode, "SCANREG /RESTORE", and I would select a previous date registry. What is the difference between Windows XP's "System Restore" and Windows 98's "SCANREG /RESTORE"? Thanks in advance, Brad Before you type your password, credit card number, etc., be sure there is no active keystroke logger (spyware) in your PC.

Icons in Start Menu
by Guest Terry Pinnell- 5 replies

It's only a cosmetic issue but a sprinkling of the icons in the Start Menu (at various levels) are the 'standard yellow folder', instead of the proper one. I could change every one individually but that's tedious. Is there some way to fix the lot in one go please? -- Terry, East Grinstead, UK

I have run out of ideas on how to get past it. So, I am turning to you all for ideas. I would be happy to recieve a recommendation as to better places to look for help also. by Guest Will G.- 4 replies

Hi there, In Windows XP Professional, when I go to Volume Control> Options> Properties> Recording. There is NO option to record from Wave out, like there always used to be on 2000. There is only 'Line in' and 'Microphone'. How on earth can I enable this? I've been searching for an answer all bloody day; I've got a million and one answers for Vista (to show the Disabled Devices blah blah), but nothing for XP. If anyone knows how to do this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, -Will

Change File Dates?
by Guest LMO- 3 replies
Aloha all. Is there a way to change the dates of files (maybe even a batch of files)? I ask because I have a Digital Picture Frame that seems to display the JPG files in date order, then alphabetical order. I would rather have it purely alphabetical, but no can do. So I figure if I can change all the dates to the same date, the problem would be solved. Any way to change file dates? Many thanks!

SP3 installed via Windows Update disabled all apps
by Guest churin- 8 replies

This is a post to inform of my experience. The SP3 installed via Windows Update killed all my application softwares. I attempted to repair by repair install of WXP with SP3 slipstreamed but the problem was not cured. I restored the WXP from its backup and installed the SP3 from a downloaded standalone SP3 installer, then no such problem happened.

Last week we were loking for a solution to a problem printing from Excel where it would print an error page saying "IllegalOperatorSequence" and we had requested the patch to fix it. We had not heard back and so we went to request it again, but the KB article is not showing correctly When searching for this KB article, the title shows as: ------------------------ Excel or Word cannot print multiple copies of a multipage document after you install the .NET Framework 3.0 on a Windows Server 2003-based or Windows XP-based computer (948046) - Fixes an issue in which some Office applications cannot print multiple copies of a multipage document by using a prin…

Window opens up before "loading your personal settings" window
by Guest Frustratedone- 9 replies

Hi there I have this problem and it is driving me crazy. I cannot seem to find any solution. I have windows xp home on 1 computer and windows xp pro on my laptop. This problem occurs on both these computers. When I start my computers, it goes through the usual steps. I see the windows logo and then a window comes up. It looks more like a notepad window but the filename on top is garbled. The content of the window is also garbled but limited to 5-10 characters. On my laptop, I can see C:\windows\system32 as the file name but it looks like notepad is trying to open a system file but I can't understand why it is doing it. There is an "OK" button at the bot…

No mouse driver for DOS in Windows XP?
by Guest FUBARinSFO- 11 replies
Hi: In the course of formatting a bootable system diskette in Windows XP, I noted that no mouse.com driver was included on the resulting diskette. I was rather surprised then to find no mouse.* driver on my installed XP system, nor could I find it in the Support\Tools folder on the distribution CD. Did I overlook something, or is no DOS mouse.com/.exe/.sys installed or available with Windows XP? If not, is there a recommended default driver/mouse.com executable people pull in to add to their boot system floppy? Thank you in advance for your help. -- Roy Zider

Wireless problem after installing SP3
by Guest Paul- 4 replies
Hi After installing SP3 onto an Acer Aspire 1360 (XP Home SP2) it will no longer connect to my wireless network. It simply sits there trying to acquire an IP address but doesn't succeed. It also says the signal strength is low where it is usually excellent and is trying to connect at 1Mbps. Trying to find networks in range results in the claim there are no networks in range. Uninstalling SP3 restores normality. The wireless router is a Belkin with hardware version F5D7231-4 2000. Any ideas? -- Paul

I have a question, and I apologize if this has already been answered. I have a Motion m1300. Currently, I have Windows XP Pro running on it, but I want to know if there are any utitilities that I can download that will make it similar to the Tablet edition. Specifically, as a tablet user, can I run XP pro and still have the drawing, sticky notes, journal, etc features? And where can I get them? Thanks

Card Slot
by Guest jcliquidtension- 3 replies

Hi, I am running Windows XP on my laptop, and I have a couple of cards that I use for internet. One is a Motorola wireless adapter (because the computer does not have built in wireless), and the other is a Verizon Air Card (for mobile internet). The problem I'm having is that I have to keep reinstalling these cards (using the driver discs) almost every time I switch from one to the other. I never had this problem before. I just wiped out and reloaded (with the stock restore disc), and it has not helped. I have also had problems with a GPS device that plugs into the USB. I've had to reinstall this a couple times too. The details are below: Comp…

Slipstreaming WinXP with SP3
by Guest Greg Strong- 20 replies
Hello All, Is it possible to slipstream (i.e. combining) WinXP original with SP3? Related info on combining WinXP original (Or SP1) with SP2: see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894947/ see http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html I haven't upgraded to SP3 as of yet. I'm waiting to see if any major issues. I know it hasn't been long since SP3 has been release, however I thought that I'd ask the question since it removes all of the online updates from SP2 to SP3. I'm thinking about re-configuring my system, so a lot of time would be saved. TIA! -- Regards, Greg Strong

I installed SP3 with no problem, however I had an unrelated issue using msconfig and one of the steps to correct was to uninstall SP3. Now I can't re-install SP3 without errors. I get an error " The requested lookup key was not found in active activation context". Any idea on how I can fix the problem. Thank you

Cannot install downloaded program
by Guest JS- 10 replies

Greetings, On my XP Pro pc at work, I tried to download a program and got the setup on the desktop ok, but when I click on the desktop icon, nothing happens. I went to my pc at home and downloaded the same program into a portable hard drive and took it back to work and installed it from that. It installed just fine. I have tried other downloaded programs before and they will not install either. What could be preventing this pc from installing downloaded programs? I have dialup at work, and get email ok, the browser is a little slower than dsl at home, but that it expected. Thanks, Jim

using a specific IP address if DHCP is unavailable?
by Guest yawnmoth- 3 replies

I was looking at the Advanced TCP/IP Settings and noticed that you can have multiple IP addresses. I was wondering... would it be possible to use DHCP and, failing that, specific IP addresses / subnet mask? I ask because I have a laptop that I use at, primarily, two different locations. One location uses DHCP and the other doesn't - you have to manually specify "192.168.0.x". What I do, right now, is that I manually adjust the TCP/IP properties, manually. Is there a way to avoid having to do this?
