Keyboard does not work after logout
by Guest Robert S- 1 reply

I am running XP with 5 user accounts. I use the login screen with the icons. At times when somebody logs out, the keyboard does not work when trying to log in again. I am not able to enter a password or tab around options - nothing happens. The only way to fix this is to reboot, or to click on a user account that does not use a password to log in, and log out immediately from that account - it works OK then. Any ideas on how to fix this?

MS Backup Program
by Guest Bob- 5 replies

Hi there, I am running Windows XP Home and have the backup program loaded from the CD. I try to run the program and would like to have it backup the system every night. I have tried numerous times to use the backup wizard to do this and each time I am asked for the user name and password. I have never used a user name or password in the past but added a password to the string of letters and numbers they gave as a user name and seemed to get through it. However, everytime it should run I have a message on the scheduled tasks that says, "could not start." I would apprecate some help in learning what I am doing wrong. Thanks for your time and knowledge…

When EFS goes bad
by Guest David H. Lipman- 12 replies

We are on an Active Directory Domain. Recently, through Group Policy enforcement, EFS has been pushed to our users on notebooks. Generally speaking things have gone well. However one of my users has run into a negative consequence. One of my users complained that he could no longer access one of his MS Outlook Archive folders. Examination found the 1.38GB to exist and Outlook was properly pointing to it. At first it was thought that it was damaged so I ran the InBox Repair Tool. It indicated the PST was Read-Only. When I examined the PST it did not have the Read-Only attribute but it was encrypted. Under the end-user's account I tried to decrypt…

Is XP Pro still scheduled to meet its fate today?

Hmmm, if we can get paramedics, or better yet, Gregg House out to Redmond today, I wonder if that could prevent the assisted suicide of Win XP Pro expected today?

Add or Remove Programs / Show Updates
by Guest neilsolent- 5 replies

Does anyone know what "recipe" is used to determine the list of installed software components in the "Add or Remove Programs" applet, with "Show Updates" un-ticked ? It is obviously looking at the keys under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft \Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall, but I can't determine how it decides which ones to list when "Show Updates" is un-ticked. Thanks!

Dualboot problem (2 times XP Pro), second version only goes to justbefore login screen Hello, I have four partition, the first is the original XP installation, on the second partition I copied a fresh install from another drive using Acronis. Now, when I try to boot to the second partition (XP bootmanager), it boots and does its thing, the start screen appears and just before one would expect the login box to appear, there appears a small xp logo (with the words "welcome" under it, if I remember correctly). I assume there are issues with the drive lettters but I have no idea how to fix it. can anyone help? thanks, Alex

Start Button Applications
by Guest dhstein- 4 replies

Just out of curiosity, where is the list of applications that appear on the start button kept? Is it a file? Is it a specific folder? Some of the applications are above the line and some are below the line. Is that 2 separate folders or something else? It doesn't seem to be in Documents and Settings\all users\start menu. Thanks for your help.

re: unexpected task bar change Has anyone encountered a change in the color of the taskbar, it has always been blue and now is a shade of gray. I have checked the task bar and start menu properties dialoge box to see if someone change settings and I do not see any option to change the taskbar color in general. How do I get it back to it's original state ?

Cannot clear print que
by Guest Joseph- 1 reply

Hello, I have a shared print driver from a Windows 2000 Server. This workstation is XP professional and has the shared print driver on this workstation. The local workstation print folder continously shows that this shared print driver has a number "1" in residing in the print que. I have tried to go to the "Delete all documents command" and execute but there are no print jobs existing to delete. I tried going into the %systemroot%>system32>spool>printers and remove any files that would hang the print spool up yet there are no files to delete. I tried restarting the print spool service and rebooting but still did not remove the "1" from print q…

Re: Need to disable offer from Outlook Express "to free up disk space, outlook express can compact messages"

Re: Need to disable offer from Outlook Express "to free up disk space, outlook express can compact messages" My frustration is related, but somewhat different than many here in this post ... hope someone has encountered it and has a 'fix'. Specifically, at random , even from a clear Desktop, one of my machines will 'launch' this 'compacting' message, and continue posting that annoying message as many as 20 or 30 times, all at once. The 'message' windows will fill up 3 rows in the task tray. None of my other machines have this problem (except when I reach my set '99' 'compact check count' limit, which is fine). Has anyone else seen this problem and know …
