“open “, “Save”, or “Save As” dialog box defaults
by Guest krazykat- 11 replies
I use WIN XP Pro and have a question about an annoyance in the “open “, “Save”, or “Save As” dialog box that appears with just all programs and Internet explorer. It seems the “open “, “Save”, or “Save As” dialog box defaults to the “List” view to show files. I all ways have to change to the “Details” view each time I use the “open” selection. A real time waster when you open many files. Is there any way to set the default value to open to the “Details” view? I have searched and been unable to find any settings. I may not be asking the right question, Tweak UI or Power Toys did not seem to mention. I am sure there is probably a registry settings. Any sugg…

Removing files based on a list
by Guest still- 5 replies
Hi all, I've got a folder with about 3000 pictures. My sister has gone through and made a list of pictures she wants to remove in excel (instead of actually deleting them). She now wants to get rid of the files on the list. I was hoping there is a way of using the excel list to delete the files automatically. One thing to note is that the file names have spaces so I'm not sure how that will affect this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello, I am curious, what are the reasons that some applications after being uninstalled leave some entries in the registry, or leave behind a corrupted registry? Are the application developers incompetent? Or is it just difficult to do this in Windows (bad OS design)? Having gone through the recent ZoneAlarm and KB951748 fiasco, I am strongly thinking of doing away with ZA. But looking at the methods to clean up one's computer, e.g. one is here: http://forums.zonealarm.org/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=inst&message.id=78945 I cannot recommend this method to an average Joe. Are such applications' developers just plain incompetent and/or c…

by Guest Crystalprimesourcedesign- 3 replies

I tried the end of last week to download Windows XP service pack 2. I needed to do this before I upgraded to Quickbooks Pro2008. The process took over a hour and a half before I had to leave the office. Left the computer on over the weekend. Came in this morning the computer was frozen. Cancel out of the install, (it did not complete) and the computer rebooted itself. Now the computer reboots after it gets to the window XP screen. Error message on the second screen: Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM - Bootable CD Does Not Exist.... Is there anyway to stop the computer from doing this loop? I am ready for a new computer, but I would like to get into this to get …

Two mysterious directories, sometimes invisible
by Guest Anthony Buckland- 5 replies
YMMV, but on my system (WinXP Media Edition with SP3), two directories hang off C:\Documents and Settings, but are invisible by all normal means that I can discover in Windows, with one exception: if I go to Command Prompt and do a "dir /ad" in Documents and Settings, they are visible. There is one application that seems able to see them; in Zone Alarm (lately the subject of considerable debate in this group) -- in the Anti-virus/Anti-spyware window, go to Advanced Options, then to Scan Targets, and they are oddly enough visible. Yes, I have hidden files and system folders set to be visible. The directories are "LocalService" and "NetworkService", one word…

PowerPoint / LCD projector
by Guest STS- 2 replies
I am using XPpro and PPT2003, which usually works perfectly. However, every time I attach a LCD projector to do a presentation, the first slides shows, but then PPT freezes up and I can no longer change slides. Other office applications, such as Excel, also act up and by itself zoom in to 0ver400%. Also, the cursor gets stuck and flashes really fast. After I unhock the LCD and re-tart the computer, evryting works fine again.... Any idea why this is and how to trouble shoot? Thanks. Simon.
