She bought a new copy of WinXP Pro and chages the product key. Reboots Product requires activations (no problem) Call MS rep, get activation key start windows. Click on user account, get "this product required activation" Click on activate, get sent to, this product is already activated... lather, rinse, and repeate. I have followed intructions on: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328874 and tried http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/PKUInstructions.aspx and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/31…

AntiVirXP08
by Guest Bobbi- 6 replies

My machine is infected with AntiVirXP08. McAfee Antivirus was unable to remove it. I've read that this virus can make it impossible to install other virus removal tools. It appears that the virus also deleted all my system restore points. However, I have some system state backups made using the MS Backup Utility on an external hard drive. The MS Win XP guidebook describes it as making "copies of your registry hives". What are registry hives? Would it be reasonable to try to restore a recent system state backup using the backup utility under these circumstances? What other parts of the system might need to be restored separately? (MSCONFIG/Sta…

updates on XP
by Guest Nate Rosenthal- 1 reply

In doing some cleaning up of my hard disk, I appear to have eliminated some updates that I probably. When I go to Microsoft and run an automatic updating, it shows only one file that is critical (Frameworks.Net) and it won't install the update unless the original file is there. I already know that I need to download at least 1.1 for that to work. When I go to System Information, it is saying that SP3 is installed, but it appears that things that might have come with SP2 are not there, such as Movie Maker and I am guessing a few other things. Should I be reinstalling SP2. Will it do so with SP3 already on. Can I uninstall SP3 and work my way up from…

OT: HDD drive light on permanently and IDE drives not seen
by Guest Martin C- 9 replies

This is probably not an XP issue (hence the OT in the subject line), but someone here may be able to help. Doing nothing special (just selecting the start menu), the PC locked up totally with the HDD light on permanently. I waited for an hour before deciding that it was totally locked. Ctrl/Alt/Del would not work either. The HDD did not sound as if it was accessing, so I performed a hard turn off with the power button. I now have the following. The HDD light comes on immediately power is applied and stays on permanently. The BIOS now cannot set either the DVD ROM drive or my spare IDE HDD. The main drive is a SATA which is seen ok. Not sure if this w…

Auto hide icon in system tray?
by Guest Michel- 1 reply
Hi, For my work I installed software that enables me to log in over the Internet on the network of my company using a virtual private network. As a result a new local area connection is added to my network connections. And that resulted in a new icon in my system tray. I personally do not like a cluttered up system tray. Icons I do not want to see are set to 'always hide' (right click task bar, select properties, in the 'Taskbar and Start Menu Properties' window, select Customize. Select 'Always hide' in the drop down box of the icon you do not want to see displayed). But the next time I start my system the icon is back again. Does anyone know how I…

"Blue" files won't open
by Guest Murena Kid- 2 replies
Some days ago I ran the disk cleanup and now all the files contained in some older folders have their names in blue instead of black. I read on the internet that files with blue name are compressed files. The problem is that I can't open anymore those files. Pictures shows a "preview not available" error. For wmv, avi and mpeg I get an error saying the codecs are wrong or it's not a video file or something like that. Text files open but I get only random symbols and letters inside. I am quite confused and worried. Any suggestions? Sorry for my English, I am Italian!

Slipstream SP3?
by Guest +Bob+- 3 replies

I'm looking for a pointer to directions for creating a slipstream SP3 CD. Also, if I do this, will the resulting CD be able to boot and do a "repair" operation on an existing SP3 ? Or will it only do full installs? Thanks,

by Guest Airman First Class Simpson- 1 reply

I have my pop up blocker turned on but yet i still am getting pop ups all the time. Also my computer isn't letting me access my email through msn,or let me access facebook, or myspace, or search anything through google or yahoo. The computer just sits there and loads forever and then tells me that the page can't be displayed. I don't know if this is a computer issue or my internet provider (which is comcast). I just got this computer and just got internet installed. I also have norton anti virus installed and it says i have no viruses or anything.

How to re-create the Show Desktop button
by Guest tommyvin- 4 replies
I deleted the Show Desktop button from the Quick Launch by mistake. How can I get the icon back again? I went to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=190355 and followed all the steps but instead of an icon appearing on the desktop only a small .scf note appeared. I have Windows XP and IE7. The instructions in the Microsoft support article above stated that the steps could be used with IE6. This is not an important problem because I can of course right click in the Taskbar and click Show the Desktop. But I've now put some time in trying to solve the puzzle and I'd like to find a solution.

Add/Remove
by Guest Nate Rosenthal- 7 replies

Been cleaning off a hard drive w/o reformatting. I have been removing unwanted programs, first through the add/remove. Some that I have removed are still populating the add/remove program. How can I get rid of the references. I have alreaqdy gone to the folders and removed them and even to the Registry. Reboots don't seem to do the trick. Any thoughts out there?
