Windows repeatedly tries to upgrade
by Guest Don J- 1 reply

Running the installation disk yields the message: Windows has already attempted to upgrade the following Windows installation: E:\Windows "A , , , Z" Setup will try to complete the upgrade again * To retry upgrading to Windows XP, press Enter. * To quit Setup press F3. Note that there is no way offered for doing anything else. Indeed pressing F3 and restarting the installation disk yields the same thing. Any help would be appreciated! "Run" command missing...
by Guest Stratocus- 7 replies

I have a laptop, running XP Home, that I bought secondhand a couple of years ago. Never had any issues, and mostly still don't. Except that, today, I wanted to launch an application from the Run Command only to find that it doesn't exist in the Start Menu. I tried right-clicking and "customize" but it wasn't available in the list. I then clicked the Windows + R keys and up pops an error message: "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. " I am the only user with Admin privileges. Other than installing a new OS is there any way to overcome these restrictions?

Hi, I want to add a new video card to my HP Pavillion a820n computer. From some advice on the newsgroup, I uninstall the original video on-board driver first. Then, I wanted to delete other left driver under display and video adapter driver after the safe mode bootup (This is the suggestion for the upgrade video driver). But, my computer go to system restore, instead of safe mode bootup. It had quite a long time to restore and to the partition action later. Now, my computer directly goes to the single administer account (previously it has four accounts). Even though I can see the shared directories and files, the other three account files, I lost my documents un…

XP crashed after attempting to install a digital camera
by Guest jcwinters- 0 replies

Was instructed to restart the system. I restarted the system and a blue screen with an error message flashed for a second and the system moved the DOS screen (for 30 seconds) that normally allows the user to move into Safe Mode, Last Good configuration, etc. Was not allowed to move the cursor with arrows and then it continuously moves to attempt to normal start-up and then returns to the same process, over and over. Please help John in Guthrie, OK

Auto update kills internet access
by Guest grok- 10 replies
I have two windows computers and both cannot access the internet today after performing auto updates. (I'm using my wife's macbook for this post.) Actually, my desktop can access the internet because I have a stock market app that uses the internet without IE but IE7 and Office cannot access internet. The whole router-comcast-internet path works because I'm using it for this message. I don't know how to proceed. I probably need to use safe mode to start some reset to an older version but I need someone to walk me through it.

Help!! cannot disable (or turn off) Windows firewall
by Guest H.S.- 18 replies

Hello, This is on a relative's Windows XP machine. I help him remotely now and then to solve his Windows or applications' problem. The last time I logged into his machine was a few months ago using VNC viewer. Just today he told me that he cannot access the internet. So I tried logging into his machine (using VNC) but it didn't work. After a small series of questions, I realized that his Windows firewall is turn ON and that was preventing me from opening a VNC session. I even tried making exception for VNC (port 5900) in the firewall, but to no avail. He is not able to browse either via Internet Explorer or Firefox. Now, I recall when I visited him…

Top inch of screen is "no man's land"
by Guest dalbatross- 3 replies
When programs are opened, they do not expand to fill the top inch of the screen. On the desktop, the desktop image-- if stretched -- fills the screen, but the desktop icons--on auto arrange--do not fill the top inch of the screen. If auto arrange is unchecked, you can drag an icon into the top inch of the screen but it eventually disappears - as if it has gone behind an invisible curtain. Logging onto my wife's account, (I'm administrator and she is the other user and we run XP), everything works normally. Programs fill the whole screen and icons fill the whole desktop. Can anyone solve this mystery?

XP SP3 - confused
by Guest Richard Fangnail- 11 replies

I'm not clear whether I need SP3 or not. They are going to add it to Auto Updates today. I have XP SP2 and have been loading the updates. I thought SP3 was just a lot of patches, which had already been available through Windows Update. Hence I wouldn't need it. I've been reading today that if you DON'T want SP3, you should load a kit - but won't Autoupdates load SP3, and shouldn't I just load it?

by Guest BrandieKing- 7 replies
A couple of weeks ago I started getting this error message. When the error happens, the error message box doen't always come up...sometimes the new window or program just won't open. I'll be going along using my computer without any problems and then all of a sudden, I can't open any new windows...no new windows in Internet Explorer, no new programs, no new folders...nothing. I can restart my computer and then it will be fine for awhile (maybe 30 minutes or 1 hour), but then it starts with the same problem again. I've completely updated Norton and AdAware and run full scans on my computer, but nothing was found. What's causing this???
