user groups in xp
by Guest Alan- 5 replies

This is probably a simple, stupid question to many, but here goes. I have XP Home at home and only have two user groups: Computer Administrator and Limited. I see lots of references to other groups like Power Users or Backup Administrators with different levels of privileges. Is it possible to create new groups in XP Home? Thanks for info.

Renaming a user's home folder
by Guest Rich Pasco- 4 replies

In Windows, it's easy to rename a user (change a user's user name) at Control Panel / Users / Properties / General. However, this does not rename their home folder (the subfolder of Documents and Settings). Is there a way to do that, without breaking all the system references? - Rich

Headset/microphone gets muted, please help
by Guest Michael Allred- 6 replies

I own a LogiTech headset/microphone, you know headphones and microphone all in one? Anyway I use it for voice chat, primarily through Yahoo messenger to call up friends' computers and talk that way. Problem is sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and I have no idea what causes it not to work. Somehow the microphone gets muted and no sound goes through at all. The headphones work and I can hear sound (not from another person talking mind you, just whatever it is I'm listening to, music, etc.) Anyway, I'm going through everything I know of before making a call through Yahoo messenger to be sure everything's set up like it should. I'm no expert o…

explorer command line switches with /separate
by Guest simonc- 0 replies

Just discovered the useful /separate option for explorer.exe which can be combined with runas to get an explorer window with a different user's privileges. But it doesn't seem to work if I try to combine /separate with oher explorer switches, such as /e or specifying a directory to open in. Is there a special syntax for this or does /separate preclude the use of other switches? Grateful for advice.

by Guest Peter- 9 replies

Hi All, This is my first Question/s ever, so be nice to a first timer. please. This is my story. I bought a second hand computer with WinXp Home on it. Acer Veriton 5500. I wiped the Hard Drive clean because I didn't want any virus's, etc. I didn't understand to much about Re-Installing, Activation's. So I bought another WinXp Home SP1 OEM Cd brand new(unused). I’ve installed it & its all working great (much better than my Win98). But I believe I've read in your newsgroups that I didn't "need" to do this. I could have used the Product Key that was on the side of my computer to re-install Wimp Home with the Cod they gave me. (I know I'm real dumb in …

SP3 stops Microsoft update working
by Guest Brian- 7 replies
Installed the official SP3 on a brand new Dell Inspiron Core 2 Duo 2.66 with 4 G RAM last night before installing any programs. It immediately stopped the Windows update site from working any further - any attempted installations failed, so I couldn't update Office etc after loading them. Did a system restore to remove SP3 and all was fine again. Any thoughts?

by Guest Hamnod- 1 reply

Hello: During the copying of images via CD writing wizard, a response appeared the amount of images exceeded the CD capacity. Unfortunately, I decided to cancel the writing process and now I cannot find those images! However, the taskbar periodically would say there are files to be copied onto the CD but when I clicked on the bubble, no files. Please help and advise on how to retrieve them and what happened in the cancellation process. Thank!
