When I click on the point to change the settings -- really, to see what they are! -- what I get is a warning message that says "Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings." What does this mean? Do I have a impending disaster on my hands?

Hi All, Tunnel: openvpn-2.1_beta7-gui-1.0.3-install.exe OS: XP-PRO sp2 client; sp3 server I am trying to set up a tunnel between two computers. All goes well until the client (sp2) tries to log into the server (sp3). As soon as the clients traffic hits the server, the server crashes. There is nothing in the Open VPN GUI log file. But there is this in Microsoft event log under applications: Faulting application, openvpn, exe version 0.0.0.0, faulting module MSVCRT.dll version 7.0.2600. 5512, fault address 0x00032a16 If you look at the send error message report, it says the same thing. What I have done so far …

Network computer not seen
by Guest Ernie Lane- 1 reply

I have a home wireless network, a "standard" one: the router is attached to a desktop (XP) and I have a laptop (Vista) that is wireless. I print using printer sharing on the desktop, so I know the laptop "sees" the desktop. That's confirmed in My Network Places -- on the laptop, I see Documents and Shared Documents on the desktop. However, it doesn't work in the other direction: nothing on the laptop, not even the laptop itself, shows up. However, if I click on "view workgroup computers" in Start...My Network Places, the computer is listed. I've already installed the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder, or at least I thought I did. I w…

Bugcheck in Event View after boot
by Guest Bruce.- 0 replies

Just FYI. Here's one for the Google archives. XP SP3. My system is not now crashing nor BSOD but I've been getting this event recorded in the Event Log on EVERY boot. "The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0x804ef186, 0xbacf374c, 0x00000000). A full dump was not saved." I was getting BSOD a while ago but have since fixed that. It turns out that XP will record the above event message on every boot if you still have this file: c:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP That's the file it usually writes during a BSOD, however the boot code is apparently not smart enough to know it's an old file, so it continues to log …

minimal "System Partition"?
by Guest Timothy Daniels- 14 replies
What is the minimal file set that would form what Microsoft calls the "System" partition (i.e. the Primary partition marked "active" which can boot load XP from another partition)? I know that ntldr, boot.ini, and ntdetect.com are needed. But what else? The swap file? Anything else outside the WINDOWS folder? I'm considering using a single such partition to load multiple instances of XP, each residing in a logical drive within a very large Extended partition. *TimDaniels*

Errors after SP3 update
by Guest Neil Harrington- 22 replies
I've just updated one of my WinXP systems to SP3. Now when it starts up I get two error messages, one after the other: The procedure entry point apsSearchInterface could not be located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dll. The procedure entry point apsInitialize could not be located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dll. Clicking OK on each of these closes it and then Windows seems to run normally, but something must be adrift here. Restarting just produces the same two error messages every time. How do I fix this? From what I can understand this FIOS only works from home. What can you do if you are elsewhere or in Canada? How do you connect to the Internet? It's a shame to be paying for connection but can only use the laptop from home. Any suggestions? -- Yukon Kate
