XP Logging on then immediately logging off
by Guest RipperT- 14 replies

I have an HP Pavillion desktop w/ XP (don't know if it's Home or Pro) that logs off as soon as it logs on. I get welcome screen, logon screen, desktop wallpaper, then logoff. This happens with the only account on the machine, the same account in safe mode and the admin account in safe mode. My research points to a corrupt userinit.exe file in Windows\system32. I removed the HDD to another computer and replaced the userinit.exe file with a known good one, then returned the drive to its host machine, but no change. Further research suggests that a registry key may still point to a wrong userinit.exe file or wrong path, and I would like to check the registr…

Starting Outlook Express always starts up Windows Messenger. I have unchecked the "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger" option box, but OE ignores this and starts it anyway. Anyone know how to stop it? Eddy.

Hi, I am running Windows XP Home Edition and having a problem. When I start up the computer, the monitor screen appears pixelated. The sequence gets as far as the Windows XP logo, then goes black. I was able to run a Hardware Diagnostic from a CD that came with my computer and it returned the following errors: Video RAM Quick Test Failed VGA graphics RAM Test Failed SVGA graphica RAM Teat Failed Is the problem with my video card? Do I need to replace it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Joe

Bluetooth Notification Area Icon Disappearing...
by Guest lupo666- 0 replies

Hi, I have a Trust Bluetooth dongle, which works perfectly. I use it to connect a Logitech Laser Mouse and an LG L600V, the latter thru its own software. Never had a problem. Lately, the bluetooth icon which used to sit in the system tray (notification area) is gone. I have checked the registry and the relative key is set to 1. If I open bluetooth thru the control panel, I uncheck > apply > check > apply, the icon reappears and works perfectly, until the next restart, where it's gone again... Considering: - SSPD Discovery Service is Disabled - UPNP Service is Disabled - Registry Key is set to 1 Any suggestions? Regards, Lupo

When I attempt to power it up (battery only) I get no lights and it doesn't power up. When I plug in the AC adapter it turns on right away but the date goes back to 2000 and time was screwed up. I go into control panel, date/time and plug in the correct date/time and everything is peachy. Again, if I pull out the AC Adapter while the laptop is on, it remains on. Frequently, lately, when I jiggle the mouse to bring my XP up from standby, the screen comes up Without a cursor. No amount of shaking the mouse reveals a pointer, and I am left to restart from the tower "on" button. Is there a better way to deal with this?

The hard drives in my seven year old computer are formatted in Fat 32. Can I use Win XP pro SP2 to convert all my partitions and drives to NTFS. Is it worth the trouble? How would I go about it? Can I convert the drive that holds the OS (C: drive)? -- Walter http://www.rationality.net -

FDISK & Format

I'd guess there is no such apps for XP? I'm just formatting a few old hard drives before getting rid of them and thought perhaps rather than FDISKing and Formatting with a Windows 98 Floppy, perhaps I could do something similar to put them in a more current state... Earl

MSXML 4.0
by Guest John- 1 reply

Looking through my Add/Remove I spotted MSXML 4.0 KB936181. I looked on the web to see what it is and saw a later version. Should I do anything - or will updates take care of it at some time in the future?
