Hosts file effectiveness
by Guest RobertVA- 8 replies

Am I misunderstanding the use of the Hosts file to block web sites? I thought adding "127.0.0.1 acme.com" was supposed to override the Domain Name Server's data for the IP address when ANY browsers requested a page from acme.com (made up domain name), directing the browser to the local hard drive. Since the requested page probably isn't on my hard drive this should permit me to block things like advertising pop-ups from that site. So many sites won't function without JavaScript. I'm not enthusiastic about turning it off. However, I continue to find cookies from these domains when I scan for tracking cookies. Third party cookies are turned off …

I trying to point the My Documents path from the default location to a network drive. I found a reg key for this and apply it on the logon script for the other users. But it seems the user need to re-start the machine for the setting to be recognized by Windows (after they run the script) Is that an alternative for apply a new My Documents Path or is it a way to force Windows to recognize the setting at the first time? Winxp sp3, AMD 3800+ dual core, 2gb dual Corsair ram (tested, its not value ram) 160gb Sata (Tested) NVidea 8600GT, Large Pwr supply from a decent source, though I would have expected obvious drive problems if Pwr was an issue. No heat issues, No malaware, trojans or virus, plenty of free space No Event errors, chkdsk has been run without issue, drive is defragged. System runs 24/7 & has done for the last 3 years or so since a new hardware clean install, BSOD a rarity - cannot remmber the last - No Games, Mainstream Office type programs only. Certain MS programs, eg Outlook on occasions show a lag if any screen refresh is required - no its not an issue …

SP3 corrupts Adobe Flash Player
by Guest Scott- 6 replies

I updated one of my computers with SP3 today. I discovered the adobe flash player on the Yahoo Launch web site no longer has full functionality. Specifically, clicking the full screen button does not do anything anymore. Everything works fine on my other computer. FYI, when I first restarted my SP3 computer, the internet connection did not work. Restarting again corrected the problem. Any fixes out there? Scott Los Angeles

Filtering

In mid June in this group, there was a conversation (John2, Alan, others and myself participated) about filtering in MS newsgroups. In order to get the straight skinny on the issue, I asked my MS contact to comment. If you would like to read his comments, please download a zipped .txt file from my web site: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/assets/images/Filtering.zip If you have any comments, you can contact me via email through my web site and thus avoid an (off) topic conversation here. -- Regards Ron Badour MS MVP Shell User

Reinstalling the OS for a friend. But reinstallation failed several times, here the info.... When the installation process moves to the GUI part, the Windows XP logo freezes in place. It stays there too long. Then discovered one problem. The CPU was not properly seated, I reseated, still have the problem. I thought it was the hard drives so I alternately reinstall XP on either 250 or 40GB. Same problem The system has the following P4 2.8GhZ Elitegroup MB w/ Intel chipset 512mb RAM PC3200 specs 250gb hard drive 40gb hard drive DVD burner nVidia card 300W PS

OEM XP Tablet
by Guest Adam- 6 replies

I have an Acer tablet that is less than three years old. I am trying to reformat, but I do not have the original disks. I have contacted Acer and as they no longer support the machine or a tablet of any kind, they do not have any software they can give to me. When I contact Microsoft about it, all I received back from them is an email with a standard copy and paste that tells me to contact Acer and/or the OEM help section on Microsoft's site. I have the Key on the sticker that is on the machine, but now I just need a copy of XP Tablet. Any suggestions?

Hi People want me to publish a folder which one located on a computer. Files & folders are shared and named as "docs". I've got a public Windows 2003 Server Web Ed. with real IP and private Windows 2003 SBS with shared folder "docs" I've tried to add IIS a virtual folder "\\sbs\docs\" as "http://mydomain/docs/". However when I browse with IE, a login window prompts... I tried all possible user/pass combinations but no luck :/ "Everyone" may read&write&list the folder "\\sbs\docs\" (both Security and Share). How can I make the folder public/accessible from internet for dumb people, I mean who cannot use ftp, rdc, etc. They just …

How do I stop those annoying yellow balloons 1 2
by Guest tommy- 29 replies
Every time I move the mouse onto the screen these huge annoying yellow popup balloons telling me exactly what box my mouse is near pop up blocking my view. For instance, when typing this message if I did not move the mouse to the edge of the screen a huge window telling me to "enter your message" appeared. These are NOT folder descriptions, which in theory can be turned off. I went so far as to use TweakUI to set a "hover" to take 50 seconds, but these "tags" ignore the setting. As more and more programs add these "helpful" information tags, it makes using the computer nothing but frustrating, my machine is useless to me, I can't even use CAD programs any …
