i have a strange problem with xp and my additional drive i recently bought. i was running vista for a while and just couldn't deal with it anymore so decided to go back to xp. i have the original 250gb drive and added a 1tb drive. when i installed xp it saw the 1tb drive as D and worked fine. i started to install my drivers, first with the latest nvidia drivers for my video. it installed fine, but after the reboot i nearly freaked out when D was gone. it didn't see the drive at all. subsequent reboots did not show the drive in device manager at all. i started over again with fresh xp install and after it finished D was there again. i installed s…

I'm trying to find out how to open the Power meter window from a shortcut. This windows normally appears when you double click the battery icon in the systemtray (laptop) I've tried rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL powercfg.cpl but that merely starts the entire power config and not just the power meter window

OT: pci USB Cards...
by Guest RJK- 0 replies

After hours of trawling the web, across many months -...now and again when time permits - if you see what I mean, I still can't find that "just right" PCI USB card. ....the nearest I've come to it is: http://www.shenztech.com/code/ui/product/product.aspx?prdid=SFU2N-NEC72874&catid=9 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/60608/show_product_reviews ....I've found a few with 1 x 4 pin header internal connector. i.e. I'm trying to find a PCI card, preferably with 1394a on it as well, and which has "double" USB pin headers on it just like on a motherboard 9+key/10 pin Intel style connector, ..heaven would of course be - also an internal Intel style 1349a / case fro…

It is summer here in London but I'm sure my cpu has never been this hot? Its averaging around 70 degrees celcius? Is this way to hot should i shut down? I've got the fan set to optimum and the case has grills to allow cooler airflow but it seems to be running super hot. Any thought most welcome.. AMD X2 6000 2gb ram 500gb hd xp pro

undeletable file

Hi all, I am rescuing files from the drive of a Windows computer that died. Unfortunately the old drive was PATA and the new computer is SATA so I borrowed a USB drive housing and copied the whole "Documents and Settings" directory from the old drive to the C: drive on the new computer. But now that I've rescued files, I can't delete the directories. The offending file is: C:\Documents and Settings\Kathy\Desktop\rescued\Documents and Settings \Kathy\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\RH8ZMR9M \l.yimg.com\cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com\ver\242\embed-2007-08-28-1213\swf \yup_embed_module.swf\testmo~1.sol I can see the .SOL file in explorer a…

by Guest James- 8 replies

I have a very stubborn problem here. I'm look for anyone else's help. At startup and error box comes up saying "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." The startbar is also frozen so I have to use command lines. I have cleaned up my computer from malware and virus using DrWeb CureIt!, Malwarebytes, CCleaner, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot Search and Destroy, OneCare Scanner, avast scanner and Norton 2008. The error also occurs when trying to move a file in safe mode. I have checked and unchecked startup items to see if I could stop the error message but none of them worked. Clean booting didn't …

Hello, When I turn on the thumbnail view in Windows Explorer, in a directory of 1000+ .jpg images, only the first 640 or so are displayed, the rest are empty placeholders, and some are empty Icons. These images are all ok, none of them are corrupt. When I do this on another pc, all the thumbs are there, none missing. So, its not a WINXP bug, or a SP3 bug, because the other pc is also WINXP+SP3. Something is rotten on my pc, maybe a registry entry... I have no idea. I have tried various suggestions from this group, including: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll and REGSVR32 SHMEDIA.DLL and http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm (xp_thumbnail.exe) N…

Hi all, I first posted this in the 98 area. But they told me to come in here. I have an old Compaq Presario 5000t ( about 8 yrs old now). I have a full version of 98se with an upgrade version of Xp pro on top. What I want to do is to completely clear the hard drive and reinstall. Because my disk space is gone because of all the windows updates. My hard drive is only 10gb. Computer will only take 60gb more because of bios or motherboard. And I cant find one any more. So, I can only clear and reinstall. 2nd) Is there a way to make the computer run windows off the external hard drive I have? If so, then I could just unplug the 10gb and run off the 320gb …

XP SP3 will not install
by Guest Molly- 0 replies

Hi, PA Bear sited a web site a few days back that was designed, I think, the type of problem I've had. Ceptin it did not work. I updated XP to SP 3 about 3 weeks ago. Sigh, just after scanning, pruning and doing all sorts of maintenance. Then the OS starts doing a freezing up and constantly running memory in the background. Because I had just primped everything I did not realize I was infected with Trojans, etc. So, I uninstalled everything I had just installed, including XP3. Now I cannot reinstall it again. I made the registry changes, which were duly accepted for a missing ..dll file. Any other ideas? Thank-you, Molly PS.. I'm also the pers…
