i have caught vondo trojan on another pc. all attempts to remove has not worked. tried fix vondo, vondo fix, both say it is not present. when i run spybot search and destroy, it finds files, including 3 on registry. when i click repair, it has acted two ways-- 1- it removes files (so it seems) but a second scan finds they have reloaded. or 2- the program freezes. when i reboot and scan again, same files are found even though previous scan has said they were deleted. have found two .dll files that are corrupted with the trojan, but i am not permitted to delete them. i am told they are locked or in use by anothe program or person. have tried this over an…

Uprading Me to XP
by Guest N. Miller- 7 replies

I finally obtained a copy of the upgrade version of Windows XP Home Edition. The problem was with an old HP Pavilion 6745C running Windows Me. The OS is not geared to running a service, such as a mail server, with a long uptime. For whatever reason, Mercury/32 would cause Windows Me system resources to drop to 10%, or so, which, usually, locked up the computer, requiring a reboot. Since Windows XP does not appear to be afflicted with this problem, an upgraded seemed to be in order. To begin, I flashed the BIOS with new code, downloaded from the HP site before they pulled software for older products out of the support life. The flash was successful, but there wa…

Hello, I kept getting these errors in Windows xp, rebooting and blue screen etc. I found out my 512k memory card was bad, so i was only left with the 256 k card. so i bought 2 kingston pc2700 ddr333 (crucial.com says this is the size that will work), but actually received 2 pc2100 ddr266 (kingston.com says this is the size that will work) whatver the case may e they should both work. Windows says I am running 1 gig like normal, but the speed doesnt seem faster than the 768 i was running before. ANyway, the memory tests i run online ALL say I have 512k, and only 1 slot is being used. I tried both cards, in both slots, and each card alone, and each card …

Need a DVD backup program recommendation
by Guest PT- 15 replies

I want a simple cheap program to enable me to back up selected files and folders from my C" drive to DVD's. I don't want a feature overloaded deal which covers creation and editing of videos, etc.. Just something where I can select my desired folders on the C: drive and back them to the DVD. it would be nice if the program would remember the desired folders, so I could repeat the backup each month. Each time I turn on my desktop PC (Dell Dimension 4700) with XP Home I now notice when the little MS logo/flag comes on that vertical lines are on it in black and more when I am for instance viewing a video clip in Media Player I get verticle lines and the picture color is off. Where should I start looking given that I am fairly unable to much technically. Is this Geek time or is it a video card issue and ideas?? Any and all help and suggestions will be appreciated. Bob

I am having a problem when I shut off or restart my computer. A message flashes about dwin.exe and dll initialization error. It does not stop my computer from shutting down it only flashes real fast and then shuts down or restarts. It is a brand new Vostro 1500 with Windows XP home edition. The only programs on there so far are PC tools, AVG, Ad-aware, Spybot, and some windows updates which is up to SP3. I have went into the startup and unchecked everything one at a time to see if one of the programs in startup was doing it but I guess not because I still get this message. Can you tell me how to stop getting this message? Thank you

Key Strokes Don't Display at Startup
by Guest old volunteer- 11 replies

Someone was pressing the Shift Key too long and we ended up with Swift key or whatever that is. We straightened it out by exiting the application. BUT ... now every time we start the computer or restart, key strokes don't display on the screen. The only way to fix it is to hold down the Shift Key for awhile until it makes a sound and then you can type characters which display. It happens only when we start the computer. There must be a switch setting I'm missing somewhere? Computer is Laptop Dell 2600 Inspiron running XP Home. Help!

Suggestions on site-blocking, on a per-login basis?
by Guest foobar5@home.com- 4 replies

I have a computer in my house, XP, that is shared by two of my kids, plus there's a guest login for when we have people staying with us. I'm using the hosts file to block access to web sites that my kids waste too much of their time on and that suffices nicely. However, a situation may be arising where I might want my son (Tom) to have access to some sites that I don't want my daughter (Sue) to have access to (both have separate logins on this computer and neither knows the other's password). So the hosts file method (one hosts file per computer, used by all logins) won't work. I know that I could probably create a batch file to swap the relevant hosts fi…

Hi, I bought a new notebook PC and now everytime when I turn on the PC, it always show a menu <Hardware Profile/Configuration Recovery> page. But it only shows one profile (Profile 1) for selection, and NO time remaining counted at the bottom... I've checked in Hard Profile after logged into XP, it also showed only 1 profile (Profile 1 (Current)) I've also tired to check the box "Select the first profile listed if I don't select a profile in 0 seconds", but no use, the menu is still displayed everytime Would anyone can help or comments. Thanks a lot. Kevin

by Guest chuck- 4 replies

**i posted this in the wrong forum earlier so i'm posting here also. sorry.** i can't seem to figure out how to resize an image to use as a desktop background so that i dont get a screen full of several images of one picture rather than filling the screen with the single image itself. does this make sense? i assume it has to do with an image being smaller than 800x600 but i cant figure out how to change it so that it is that size. thanks.
