Strange oscheck error messages at start up.
by Guest IanUK- 3 replies

Hi, I am running Windows XP Home Edition SP3, & for the last 3 days when I boot my PC, a error report appears, & informs me that osCheck has encountered a problem & has had to close? I have sent this error report, & tried running my AV, defrag, error check, but nothing is working. When I search my computer, there is an osCheck.exe listed, & it says that it is a Symantec App, & there is also a OSCHECK.EXE prefetch file listed. I did speak to Symantec/Norton earlier, & they said my security is working ok, & to contact Microsoft regarding this, so I wondered if anyone on here can help? Also does anyone know if Microsoft ac…

Which configuration of the power saving energy of the PC to preserve as much as possible the hard disc Hello, I usually activate the power saving energy on my PC what has for result to stop the hard disk rotation of the trays of my discs when they are not used during 5 minutes, but when they are seeking again, the trays restart, what takes some seconds so that they can find their rotation speeds and it takes some seconds to do so and it occurs finally quite often. I wonder if these frequent stops and restarts rotations of the trays of the hard discs do not engender finally more wears of the hard discs than when these trays turn constantly when the management o…

by Guest Al Dykes- 2 replies

Actually, a friend wants me to "fix" his laptop. There are no icons on the screen. No "My Computer", no recycle bin, nana. I can get there via the "start" button, but I have no idea how the system ha hidden the desktop. I can't find a shortcut to the Recysle icon anywhere. How can I recreate it? Thanks, -- Al Dykes News is something someone wants to suppress, everything else is advertising. - Lord Northcliffe, publisher of the Daily Mail

explorer sometimes opens slow - RegMon reports ShellNoRoam\BagMRU reads
by Guest Jozsef Bekes- 1 reply

Hi Guys, I am a programmer and I never use the built in file browser of Windows (Total Commander rulez ;-)) But a colleauge of mine (non programmer) does use Windows Explorer, and sometimes it opens very slow for him. I have done some investigations, and this is what I have found: I have attached with windbg and whenever I hit break, explorer.exe was reading the registry. So I have downloaded regmon and produced a quick and a slow report. The main difference seems to be that in the slow case explorer.exe is reading values in the registry under the following path, around 20 thousands (20000) of times: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Ba…

Automated System Recovery Disk
by Guest RN1- 4 replies

I would like to create an Automated System Recovery Disk prior to installing WinXP SP3 (since my PC refused to start after installing SP1 & I had to re-install WinXP in my PC & hence wouldn't like to take any chance after installing SP3). To do so, I navigated to Programs-->Accessibility-->System Tools-- >Backup from the Start menu, clicked the link "Advanced Mode" on the welcome screen & finally clicked the "Automated System Recovery Wizard" button but I think it's backing up all the files residing on my hard disk (though I haven't selected any drives) instead of just the system files & the other necessary system information necessary …

When I click My Computer it shows : Local Disk C: Toal Size - 19.9 GB Free Space - 10.2 GB Used Space - 9.70 GB However when I right click on Local Disk C: & select explore, and then highlight all the folders in the right pane of Windows expoler, and click on properties, the info I get is : 44,671 Files, 2630 folders Sze: 6.14GB Size on disk: 6.04GB Therefore there is a difference of 3.66GB (9.70 - 6.04) between the Used Space and Size on Disk. I NEED HELP! ACCESSING EXTERNAL DRIVES This is a problem that came up about two months ago. Before that, no problem. I use: Win XP Home Ed SP-3 When I access an External Drive using USB, (Flash drive, camera, backup portable drive, etc.) it is recognized and assigned a Drive Letter. It shows the folder icons. However when I try to access (open any files) I get the message "This Operation Has Been Cancelled Due to Restrictions in Effect on This Computer. Please contact your system administrator" I have tried looking at every check box that I can find to no avail. Another suggestion was that I install "GPEdit" Did that. by Guest EdwardATeller- 7 replies

One of my customer's PC's was knocked out by a power surge through the modem connection. It has an OEM copy of XP home. It is my understanding that if I replace the motherboard, then she will have to buy a new OS if she wants one from Microsoft. This basically means her computer is a pile of junk.

by Guest Still learning- 53 replies

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080630/ap_on_hi_te/microsoft_xp REDMOND, Wash. - Microsoft Corp. is scheduled to stop selling its Windows XP operating system to retailers and major computer makers Monday, despite protests from a slice of PC users who don't want to be forced into using XP's successor, Vista. Once computers loaded with XP have been cleared from the inventory of PC makers such as Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co., consumers who can't live without the old operating system on their new machine will have to buy Vista Ultimate or Vista Business and then legally "downgrade" to XP. Microsoft will still allow smaller mom-and-pop PC builder shops to …
