VSS Problem
by Guest Michael Q- 3 replies

I am experiencing problems with VSS while running NovaStor Backup software. It has been suggested that the VSS is corupted and I have used http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/940032/en-us to fix the problem. However I am getting an error message in RegSvr32 "LoadLibrary("vssui.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found. I have seen that there are downloads of this file when I have done a search in Google. Can I download the file and if so will it cause problems? -- Michael Q

changing "opens with" settings does not apply to "open" or "print"commands
by Guest Anne Rensonnet- 1 reply

changing "opens with" settings does not apply to "open" or "print"commands I've come accross a seeming odity with printing/opening files from a browser window. If I go and select properties and make sure the "opens with" setting is correct (including "always use the selected program for this kind of file" box is checked) I end up with the file opening in the correct application (in this case a png file with Acrobat) when I double-click on it. However, if I right click and try to use the open or print command, it goes back to the original default program (MS Photo Editor) and fails. I don't get it. (I'm in Windows XP) Note that when I go to select the "Opens…

lost dvd drive

I am running windows XP on a Acer Aspire 3630 laptop - one minute the dvd is working the next is has disappeared - I can not find it in explore but it is in the device manager - it is a Toshiba MK6034GAX and in the properties window it says it is working properly. So why can I not use it. If I try to use any software for the cd player it says cd drive not found. Is this a driver issue, I have tried re-installing the driver but no change. Acer say its a problem with the Registry and Mircosoft has a fix for it but I can not find the fix anywhere. They also say I should do a full system restore but I did this 4 weeks ago for another problem and lost everyth…

SP3 and beethov9 silliness
by Guest Joe from LV- 6 replies

I installed SP3 on My Dimension 8400 with only one minor glitch. It froze on the restart shutdown and required a power down restart. Everything came up as advertised and the machine shows no ill effects. Then I attempted to update a Dimension 4600. While copying files it couldn't find beethov9.wm_ and gave the option of retry or skip. Retry didn't work so I clicked skip and it proceeded to about three quarters of the way through the installing files section and choked again on the same file. This time the only options were retry or cancel. Retry didn't work so I canceled. Unfortunately this canceled the whole installation resulting in an uninstall of th…

Slow file deletion
by Guest Anthony R. Gold- 6 replies

I've just started with a new laptop - much like others except a bit more memory (2GB) and faster HDD (7.2k SATA) under XP and one behaviour is mystifying me - deleting very large files is very slow. By very large I mean over 10GB(*) and by slow I mean over 15 minutes. No error messages, nothing locked AFAICT, just mysteriously very very slow. BTW the same type of deletion is instantaneous when done in safe mode. And also I get the same behaviours (fast under safe mode and slow under normal XP) whether deleting large files from the local SATA drive or from USB attached drives. * I need to do this as I make successive backups using PQ DriveImage or Ghost 10 a…

Hard Drive Space missing when reinstalling XP
by Guest Tan- 1 reply

Ok I recently brought a Dell computer that comes with a 250 GB hard drive and is loaded with Windows Vista. I dislike vista, so I decided to delete it and install XP Pro. This is what I did. I put the Win XP Pro CD into my computer and booted from the CD. In the Win XP pro installation, I deleted the partition that contained the Vista OS (There was 2, one that has vista and the other is recovery info, which is about 10 GB). When I told it to delete the vista partition, the XP installation did stated it was about 240 GB, but after I deleted the Vista partition and create a new partition for my XP OS, it stated the max is 117 GB. So what happened to the …

I have a problem with something removing my tool tray at bottom of Desktop screen. Desktop is fine, but the tray suddenly disappears. The only thing I can do is switch the pc off, and start over. I don't link it to any particular problem. Is there some workaround for this? What is likely cause?

Error Message
by Guest David Mac- 0 replies

Hi everyone, I keep receiving this error message in Internet Explorer V7.0.5730.11 while accessing Google News Reader. Internet Explorer will shut down and ask to send an error report. I am currently running Windows XP Home SP3. The error involves SysFader.exe and I often have trouble when shutting down Windows as this program frequently stops responding. I do not have any problems with Google News Reader when using Firefox 3. Any help resolving this issue will be appreciated. Dave

Extremely low DVD sound (Media player)
by Guest JR- 9 replies

Hia folks I'm trying to set up PCs and laptops to read DVDs using the Media Player. Video (and menus, etc) come out ok, but the sound is allways so low I can barelly hear anything. Even with both sound levels at max (windows and speaker knob) it's not even a whisper... I've tried 2 movies on 1 PC and 1 laptop, diferent brands. They are both on Windows XP Pro. The only thing I can think of is a possible problem with the codec pack the original installer used... any thoughts?

Can't log on to Windows XP
by Guest Reason4- 4 replies

I have exactly (I mean exactly!) the same problem as was recently posted by JCook. The system will boot up but won't allow logon -- it just goes into a start up/shut down loop. The same thing happens in Safe Mode except that both the Administrator and normal user logon icons are presented. I am running XP Professional on a Dell Dimension 4600 that is about almost 5 years old. Malke, I just tried your recommendation about trying to boot to the last known good configuration -- no dice. I just get the same logon loop. I am working from my laptop now because, of course, I can't access the desktop right now. Any and all help will be appreciated!!

Pop Quiz Hotshot

You have just installed an old application called MyApp on a Windows XP workstation while logged in as a local Administrator and found that the program ran correctly. However, after a Year 7 student logs on they are unable to start the program, and receive the error message “Unable to update MyApp.ini”. What is the most likely reason for this? a) The local hard disk partition is formatted as NTFS and Year 7 students do not have sufficient access to the fileserver. b) The local hard disk partition is formatted as NTFS and Year 7 students do not have sufficient access to the MyApp application folder. c) The local hard disk partition is formatted as…
