Problem with taskbar hiding the bottom of window
by Guest EszterLud- 6 replies

A friend did who knows what with her XP and now: the taskbar hides the bottom of all windows (incl. scrollbars, etc) both in maximized and normal size mode. The taskbar is set to "always visible", "auto-hide" is off, "lock" is on. I never seen such a thing in my life, I'm totally buffled what she might have done. I have tried to set the resolution back and forth, switch locked and auto-hide, restart...nothing helps. Maybe she clicked a shortcut, but I do not see logic in taskbar hiding the bottom of windows. Anyone encountered something similar? Or is it some kind of bug?

Remove program name from Add or Remove programmes
by Guest donwb- 6 replies

I am trying to remove a programme by highlighting it and hitting "Remove" in the Add or Remove Programmes page of Settings. It fails, saying it can't find the program. I know that most of the programme's details have long since gone. Sometimes when this happens, the option to remove the listing is offered, but not always. When it's not, is there any way to remove it manually? donwb

A quick curiosity question... When Microsoft issues a service pack (eg SP3) does it include new drivers for devices that have appeared since the original release of Windows, back in 2001? Thanks Jon

Computer Booting Speeding 1 2
by Guest Shrikant- 28 replies

How to speed up computer start up ? I have removed all desktop icons. The booting is slow because of actions taking place in the 'tray' icons on right hand bottom corner. One of the icons is for 'HP Product Update'. Other Icon says "Keep your computer uptodate", then another Icon says "safely romove hardware". They get loaded one by one with the pop up messages as each one gets loaded. Can it be eliminated thereby speeding up the computer start up ? Is there any way to speed up the computer ? What is the 'normal time' to boot up the computer ? Even after my computer gets booted, I see some action on my hard disk. -- Shrikant

I thought I was wise to get XP on my new Dell PC, since I needed little problems with program compatability from the software apps I was running on my prior SP2 XP machine. But since the new Dell XP came with SP3 it appears I am screwed . . . SP3 doesn't (appear) to work with 16 bit apps . . . I've spent 8 hours testing and reviewing all the latest MS kb articles on this topic to no avail. E.g., I use a Cpen 800C handheld scanner in my work that will not work with SP3, and they don't make these devices anymore, the current versions don't work unless hooked up to a computer, the old version has an LCD display and allows you to work in the field and then come back …

Need help removing old SP1 files on my backup drive

Try this... take ownership of the containing folder or individual files and delete them, change your permissions if necessary to delete them. How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421 Basic Windows File Permissions (for Windows 2000 but the same for XP) http://www.le.ac.uk/cc/dsss/docs/acls1.shtml If that doesn't help, use an application like "Unlocker" or "Delete Doctor" to delete the files. ----------------------------- "hampower" <hampower@discussions.microsoft.com> escribió en el mensaje news:B5D163B6-6946-40E9-BEBC-DCF74C22A73E@microsoft.com... > Hello, > > I am trying to remov…

"install important updates" at Windows XP SP3 shutdown - huh?
by Guest foobar5@home.com- 22 replies

I have XP SP3. When I went to shut my computer down tonight, instead of the normal standby, turn off, restart popup, I had that, but there was a Windows security shield superimposed on the turn off icon, and a message at the bottom of the popup saying "Click Turn Off to install important updates and turn off your computer. Click here to turn off without installing updates." This scares and weirds me out. I have Windows set up to download updates automatically, but only install after I review/approve the updates. But the little yellow Updates shield isn't showing in my system tray area. I went to Windows update and the last activity was September 9, wh…

reset IPC$ number
by Guest Tester- 4 replies

Hello there, Is there a way to reset or decrease the number of IPC$ logged under computer management, shared folders, shares on an XP machine? My goal is to reduce the number of client connections. I have an XP machine sharing some folders and although the number of incoming PCs connecting to the shares is only 5 I am already getting no more connections can be made to this machine error. I noticed the IPC$ is high under the client connections, the shared folders connections is normal. With only 5 PCs connected to shares I already have 10 or more IPC$ counting against the client connections limit. Thank you, T

by Guest SNewton- 4 replies

Since I used my restore disk and reinstalled everything, my background is just a gray screen. I have the updated video driver installed. Now when I go to Desktop Properites I can see the correct picture on the little monitor but still not on the desktop. I was told that there might be a program that is blocking the background from showing on the desktop and that there also might be a program that will disable the problem and fix my background. Im also using Win XP with SP 3 Can anyone help???
