Cleartype and password character corruption
by Guest Glenn- 2 replies

Has anyone noticed that cleartype corrupts the password character (big dot). It's not completely round -- flat on the top, and pointy on the bottom. This doesn't happen on initial login (after a cold startup), only after a login from a locked/suspended/hibernated machine. It's not a big deal, just annoying. Anyone know of a solution (besides turning off cleartype, which does fix the problem)? I see this problem in XP but not Vista.

Why Do Automatic Updates ALWAYS Eat Up MUCH More HD Space Than Sta
by Guest Scottbot- 5 replies

Everytime it happens. This morning there was a security update ... said size was about half a meg. After the download 4 megs were eaten up. After the install 40 more megs were used! This drives me crazy. Feels like MS is trying to get one over on me every time.

Microphone won't record
by Guest poopiesnotface- 1 reply

Ok, so I did a "microphone" keyword search through here and read the threads where people have posted having problems with their mics... to no avail. I'm running Windows XP on a Dell. The sound works fine, the mic works on another Dell. My SigmaTel driver obviously works, but alas... my microphone somehow is not picking up sound, and YES it is checked for recording device in the recording volume bar thing. But "SigmaTel" is the default recording device in the Audio and Sound Control Panel window. Any help is greatly appreciated!! thanks

problem in WinXP sp3 when using network neighborhood
by Guest tlee- 3 replies

Hi, Recently, I updated 2 pcs into SP3. But, I found when I click the "network neighborhood". It is okay and showing the window. However, after closed the "network neighborhood" window and re-click again. Since, I always need to use that function in sharing files with other PCs. In other SP2 PCs, there is no such problem. Does the problem cause by SP3? Any solution is to solve it? Or, downgrade to SP2? Thanks Tlee

Applications retaining memory after shutdown
by Guest Ed- 1 reply

Several applications including all of the Office 2003 suite do not leave memory when shutdown. Some applications will not restart until they are killed in the task manager. Firefox used to do it, but the latest version has stopped the problem. However Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 does, as does Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. IE has never done this in any of its iterations. This also happened in XP SP2 so upgrading to SP3 did not help. If I start and shutdown one of the offending apps a number of times all of the copies remain in memory and really slow things down. This happened after a series of upgrades were carried out automatically, but i cannot determine wh…

I have 512 MB of memory and want to know if there are built-in tools in WinXP Home to tell the memory usage. I am concerned that my PC is running slowly when I have too many applications open due to this, and may need to add more memory. Thanks for any information. -- J150

Firefox Question ?
by Guest James- 8 replies

I use version 2.0.0.14 of Mozilla Firefox. I tried to post this in an appropriate Mozilla group, but my server does not carry them. My OS is Windows XP, Professional. If I go to a website where the initial, downloaded page is a lengthy multi-page article, Firefox freezes. It does fine day after day, as long as I only click on text articles that are only 2 or 3 pages in length. Anyone have any idea why I have this problem ? Thanks for any advice on this. James

Windows hanging
by Guest Nick B- 0 replies

Sometime after upgrading Windows XP Home Edition SP2 to SP3 we started to experience an odd hanging. If the computer is not used for several hours (hibernate, standby, and turn off hard disks are all off), we can click on an icon on the desktop to highlight it. We can then click on a different icon and that will become highlighted without a problem, but as soon as we try to open something (program, folder, etc.) from either the desktop or the Taskbar, Windows freezes. The mouse will still move around, but you cannot click on anything. You can hover over the expand arrow on the system tray and it does say "Show hidden icons", but if you click on the arr…

Installing new software
by Guest Hazelmere- 1 reply

I am half way through installing trial software (Nero 8) with Nero 6 curremtly installed. It now tells me that it has to de-install Nero 6 before it can install the trial version of the software. I now want to back out of the installation and retain my Nero 6. However I can't reverse it - says software is ready to install (when I go to shutdown screen it says updates ready to install). Does anyone know how I can reverse the installation? cheers Hazel

Re: Desktop icons are wider than usual
by Guest Jon- 1 reply

Re: Desktop icons are wider than usual I'm having the same problem. Resetting resolution (recommended resolution or not) has no impact on aspect ratio. Everything on my screen is stretched (horizontally) about 15-20%. I've never had this problem with any monitor, but with Vista it has started. As it is I cannot use my new Dell monitor for graphics. I got on a chatline with Dell to no avial. the tech did not know what "aspect ratio" was, much less how to solve problems. I'll have to prowl the Dell driver CD for some answers, I suppose, or wait on a Vista-based answer. "Ken Blake, MVP" wrote: > Moses wrote: > > > I've tried running it a…

Recurring print file
by Guest jeh- 3 replies

A while ago I had a PDF file (possibly faulty) refuse to print on my Konica Minolta 2400W. Trying to delete it from the print queue in the usual way resulted in the delete job hanging until I turned the printer off. When I turned the printer back on the job had vanished and I was able to continue printing other files. However, every time I reboot the PC the same "faulty" file appears in the printer queue and I can't print anything else until I've turned the printer off and on again. This is maddening. The symptoms suggest that the job hasn't been deleted from the print spooler. Is this right and does anyone have any suggestions how to get around this proble…

wbemtest question
by Guest Alain Dekker- 0 replies

Hi, I've perfomed the following on two machines: * Start > Run > wbemtest * Connect > root\CIMV2 * Query: "select * from win32_temperatureprobe" On the one machine, I get two entries which I can check the values of (though not the actual temperature I want!). On the other machine, I don't get an error, but no entries are returned. Any idea what's going on? Perhaps a required service is not running on the second machine or something like that? Thanks in advance, Alain
