Explorer search behaviour with SP3
by Guest Tex Wade- 1 reply

After installing XP SP3 on several machines I have found the same problem on all of them - Windows Search can no longer find a numeric string inside a file - it only works if the search string contains one or more letters. For example, if you create a new Excel spreadsheet on the desktop, put 12345678 in one cell and testsearch in another cell, save the file, then use search to find a word or phrase in the file, it works when you look for 'testsearch' but not if you look for 12345678. This did used to work for numbers in SP2! To be clear, I am talking about searching within files, not searching just for a filename. If anyone has two minutes to try th…

Unwanted columns in a fax download
by Guest vince- 1 reply
I downloaded a fax template into Word and everytime I try to type into the fax, the whole doc is split into columns that prevent me from using the whole horizontal space. I thought maybe this could be a problem with the normal.dot file, but when I open Word I do get a blank document. However when I try to find normal.dot in search, it's not there even though my folder option/view does have "show hidden files" checked. Can anyone explain what's going on and how to get a fax template that is not columnized. Thanks -- vince

RE: Reasons to Buy Microsoft Vista at this time

RE: Reasons to Buy Microsoft Vista at this time Don't listen to what people say about Vista not being a gaming OS. I think they just assumed the backwards compatibility would be non-existant. Vista has a clean interface that looks very nice. It's can utilize DirectX 10 (which is key unless you plan on having a system specifically to play games from the 1990s). I was going to stick with XP because I listened to the negativity, but my friend told me to go for it and so I did and I'm not looking back. It's terrific. And in terms of playing old games, I bought Hitman the week it came out back in 1999/2000. Before XP even existed, and it installed on Vista n…

Outlook shortcut
by Guest Jasper Recto- 3 replies

I had Office 2000 installed on my computer. If you right clicked on the Outlook shortcut, you would be able to get the mail properties. I recently removed Office 2000 and installed Office 2003. In doing so, I lost my Outlook shortcut on my desktop. I can add the shortcut but It does not give me the ability to right click and go into the mail properties to setup my account. How do I add that option to my desktop. I know I can get to the mail options from the control panel by I want to be able to right click and get it like I was able to with Office 2000. Any ideas? Thanks, Jasper

Windows XP SP2 -> Windows XP SP3 upgrade fails w/ "File Copy Error"
by Guest zulukng@gmail.com- 11 replies

Hello, I have one computer that I have been upable to upgrade to SP3. I have spent about ten hours on it now and I can't solve the problem. This is one of those problems that has left me extremely frustrated, emotionally drained, and on the verge of tearing my hair out. It has SP2. I have a VLK CD that I am using to upgrade. I put the CD in, run setup.exe, select "upgrade," enter the key, then it does "copying files." The bar gets all the way to the end, then an error message comes up saying "File Copy Error." The file that it says it can't copy is different every time. It appears to always start with "a", then seven random letters and numbers, then ".sys". …

A really damaged partition :(...
by Guest SkyDiver- 15 replies

This morning I tried to installed a 40GB IDE disk on top of the already installed 150GB SATA one (partitioned - C:\ 30GB and D:\ 120GB). When I restarted, the system did not behave nicely.. Windows Explorer wouldn't launch, etc. I shut down, jumpered the 40GB drive as a slave and restarted. This time the system behaved better, but the terrible damage was already done - C: drive is alive and kicking, OK, but my D: partition has somehow managed to split into 2 individual partitions (!!) one in the size of 8GB and the other one 111GB, which is marked as "unallocated data"... I tried both Active Partition Recovery and Acronics Disk Director, but both of them f…

Cannot see 'open and repair' option in windows explorer
by Guest Nanny- 2 replies
Hi PC model HP compaq DC7700sff, 1GB RAM, 2.0Ghz CPU, 40GB HDD I am using windows XP pro SP2. I have a problem in that when I attempt to run'open and repair' on a word document the option is not listed in the drop down box. The other features "open as read only, and open as copy" are there. I imagine its a windows explorer issue. If anyone has a quick fix or any suggestions I would be grateful. I plan to do a repair XP install at a later date and maybe run SFC/Scannow with a copy of XP sp2. Cheers

My workgroup consists of three computers, 2 Laptops connected to a router/modem wireless, and a Desktop connected to the router via cable. I created the workgroup by using the wizard. When I check "My network places" they are all in the Internet and not in a Local Network. Should they not all be in a local network? -- Stef
