Downloads always end prematurely on one PC
by Guest Ian R- 1 reply

Hi My desktop PC is running XP Pro SP2. Its wired via Ethernet to my ADSL router. I can browse web pages and send/receive email without a problem but I've been having trouble downloading large files on it. Just one example, I had to download a 500mb .iso file. It estimated approx 50 minutes to download. After several minutes the progress bar jumps to the end. I look in the folder it was saved to and as expected its a fraction of the expected size. On the rare occasion when it takes the expected amount of time and says its downloaded the full file (e.g 532Mb of 532Mb) the actual file is much smaller and therefore corrupted. This kind of thing happen…

XP Pro: Restore Points Dissapeared
by Guest ralphs- 2 replies

An update to a piece of software (TorButton) caused problems. I did a restore to get back the old version. When I selected restore it only had ONE restore point and it was from today. Normally it has three. I doubt that it was deleted due to disk space. There is plenty of free disk space. Disk space on C: 27,635,408,896 46% Available 59,945,836,544 Total Is there some way (registry setting? tool setting?) that I can get a Yes/No message box when deletion of a restore point is requested? Anyone know what might trigger deleting restore points?

by Guest razor- 10 replies

Hello-- I have a new PC with Windows XP Pro on it and 4 GB or RAM for when I upgrade to 64-bit. In Windows 32-bit it is only showing 2.5 GB and I thought 3 or 3.5 was the max. I posted to a different forum and they said there is a switch or something I can add to show the max RAM. Does anyone here know about that? Many thanks, sd

How to Copy a File to Multiple Folders Simultaneously?
by Guest Matt91123- 2 replies
How do you copy a file into several different folders at the same time? I am trying to streamline a process at work where I have to copy a file from one drive on a network, and paste it into a separate folder in each of 3 other drives on the network. The folder has the same name, but is on three separate drives. On 2 of these drives, the folder is a subfolder (example: D:\Parent\Sibling) On the third drive, the folder resides on the root directory (F:\Sibling) I have been copying the file, navigating to each folder and then pasting it. This is time-consuming due to a slow server. Ideally, I'd like to drag and drop just once and have the file go to the…

Default Printer issue with Roaming Profile
by Guest Jordan- 0 replies

I have a user with a roaming profile that is using 3 computers in an area - Station 1, 2, and 3. Since the area is far from the main multifunction network printer we installed an HP Laserjet on Station1 and set Station 2 and 3 to print to \\STATION1\HPLaserjet (HP Laserjet on Station1). For backup incase the laserjet jams up or toner is out or whatever, we also added the network main multifunction printer - KonicaCopier. This printer uses TCP/IP printing - RAW on Port 9100. Now when this user goes from computer to computer, they cannot seem to keep their default printer to be the HPLaserjet on Station1. I believe it is because on Station1 the printer…

Locking down CD roms, USB mass storage devices and Floppy disk dri
by Guest Jordan Fey- 2 replies

I'm in a very security concious company which wants access to CD-Rom drives, floppy disk drives & USB mass storage devices restricted to the majority of machines. This is easy enough in itself, Ive used an group policy ADM to set the "start" values for "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR", "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom", "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Flpydisk" and "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Sfloppy" accordingly so as the devices are disabled via registry. The issue I have is granting access to those users who are authorised to use these devices. At present I am applying these settings individually to different OU's h…

KB951978 Doesn't Make Sense
by Guest Gis Bun- 5 replies

Looking at KB951978 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951978), it states the update affects Vista SP1, Win 2K8 and Win XP SP3. Yet the first section states that it doesn't apply. But there is an update only for http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=705e21de-f7dc-4d19-aafc-f22d3fca772f&DisplayLang=en [nothing shows up in the catalog for any OS]. If you try and install the update, you get an error message that the version of IE is incorrect. Weird.

XP Reinstall question
by Guest Dudley Henriques- 10 replies

Just thought of something that might need an answer please. I'm a Microsoft MVP recipient for Flight Simulator 2007. I maintain a highly dedicated OFF LINE PC that is used ONLY for flight simulator work. I've opted to keep Windows XP installed rather than install Vista due to stability issues with Vista. Presently I have Service Pack 2 installed. I notice there is a SP3 now available for XP. Question concerns what happens if I have to reinstall XP for some reason. As I said, I keep this PC off line deliberately and use MACS for all my on line work, so the PC has no AV protection. If I have to reinstall XP, is it possible to get SP3 on a DVD from Microsof…

Install XP on a Vista laptop?
by Guest JMF- 14 replies
I bought XP Pro for my desktop. Now I'm in the market for a new laptop. The new laptops seem only to have Vista on them. I'm curious about removing the OEM Vista and replacing it with my XP Pro that I bought. That raises two questions: - am I allowed to take the XP Pro that I bought and also install it on my laptop? - what kind of trouble am I asking for (and I'm sure there is trouble, ranging from "some" to "plenty") by replacing the original OEM Vista with XP Pro? Thanks for any inputs/opinions/facts. John

Re: Attempt to activate XP Pro fails with Out of Box Experience qu I know this is an old thread but the mystery was cleared up and I wanted to let you know what happened. As a reminder, I was having problems right after an upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro. I was getting all sorts of problems from all sorts of applications. The problem turned out to be with IE and the upgrade. I had installed IE7 on my XP Home system. The upgrade CD had IE6. I've come to learn that what I should have done was uninstall IE7 and then do the upgrade (or MSFT should have made the install "smarter" to see IE7 and not try to install IE6 components). The problems this ca…

Very slow response to Keyboard entries
by Guest bnmohan via WindowsKB.com- 8 replies

Hi! 4 June 2008 My brand new Dell Vostro Notebook with T7250 at 2.4 and 3gb ram running XP Prof with SP2 has a slow response to keyboard entries: In any application, when anything is typed on the keyboard, it is echoed after a delay of 2 to 3 seconds. So much so that whole words are typed in, but there is nothing on the screen. No characters are lost: everything appears after the usual delay. Would there be any setting in XP that could cause this? I notice that my page file does not seem to be often used by XP Pro. Can I move it safely to a large capacity USB drive? will it work? I have XP Pro, 2G Pentium 4 , 1.5G SDRAM. -- marx404 _________________
