by Guest RxK- 15 replies

My XP Home ...all up to date, ...Task manager | Performance shows two graphs :-) Device Manager says that "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" is working properly. http://www.intel.com/support/processors/tools/htu/ test utility reports that my cpu, bios and chipset failed the test ! Well, my motherboard, cpu and bios are all acceptable for hyperthreading, according to Intel's specification requirements. ....I patched with KB896256 ages ago, ...can't remember why ! ....could it just be that Intels test utility *.exe is a pile of c**p ? any thoughts appreciated, regards, Richard

How safe is my BIOS Power-on Password?
by Guest pat_mc- 9 replies
Hi - A short while ago I learnt that if I transfer my data from an NTFS to a FAT32 harddrive I lose all my security features on the files. Since I use a BIOS power-on password to protect the data on my laptop I am now wondering if there is any point to doing so at all. Could an unauthorised person not simply access my PC with a bootable Linux CD such as Knoppix and copy all of my files over to a FAT32 external drive? Or will BIOS be smart enough and prevent the evil-doer from doing this? If yes, how? If no, is there anything else I can do to be safe against data theft in case of laptop theft? Thanks in advance for your advice. Pat -- pat_mc

I had a .jpg photograph as my wallpaper. Today I went to change the wallpaper to a different photograph, and windows won't let me now select any photograph as wallpaper, other than the wallpaper images that came with windows xp. Any ideas as to why? And how I can fix this so I can use photographs as my wallpaper again?

Creating a REG Merge File
by Guest mcp6453- 5 replies

How can I create a .reg merge file that includes the changes in the middle of the page at this link: http://www.theeldergeek.com/hide_internet_explorer_desktop_icon.htm In particular, I need to be able to merge line that contains the IE icon fix. For some reason that I don't understand, when the Desktop in XP is changed from Classic to the other one, there is no IE icon. Adding this GUID ({871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}) puts it back. Someone has surely already made the tweak. If you can point me to it, that would be great.

Can't Find Windows Installer
by Guest dnamertz- 14 replies

I need to install .NET 2.0 so I downloaded dotnetfx.exe and it woudn't run because "Windows Installer" could not be found. So, I went to download Windows Installer from the MS website and I'm not sure if I found it. I searched for Windows Installer and the closest file I found was WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe which I downloaded, but the MS website describes this file as "the redistributable package for installing or upgrading Windows Installer". OK, so where is the actual Windows Installer file I need to download?

I have a wireless conection and I have a VOIP phone. Unless I turn off WZC my calls will only last between 1 and 2 minutes. However if I do turn off WZC then I can make calls a lot longer. However, after about 10 minutes my wireless connection appears to be active but getting to the internet no longer works. I then start WZC and it works great. When I need to make a phone I must stop it. Please help with advice as to how I can get through this without constantly starting and stopping the WZC. Howard

Hi all How does one protect a folder so that it's accessable on another pc but only by password. At home on our network, because I may go from one pc to another so need to share my documents. I've shared them but I don't want anyone else on the network (my kids!) accessing them. I don't want to have to password every file. Thanks J

Problem with icon size changing
by Guest Lorne- 3 replies

I recently set my desktop to 120dpi to troubleshoot a software issue. When I reset it to 96dpi icons in my status bar, the sub menus of my start menu and in the title bar of windows all became much smaller than normal. To see the effect look here: http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/lorne.anderson/iconsize.jpg How do I get these back to normal size? I have large fonts turned on and large icons in the start menu turned on. Other users of the same computer have no problem. Using XP home, all latest upgrades but not SP3.

Windows XP USB Drive Letter Assignment Problem
by Guest MattM- 7 replies

I've been browsing for a fix, and yet to find one. Hopefully someone here can help. Our enterprise is running Win Xp Sp2 and users do not have permissions to diskmngt. We're running MS and Novell network shares. When the user plugs their usb drive in, Windows automatically assigns it the first available drive letter, which in this case is a network share. I've tried putting in trash binary data for \dosdevices\drive: under mounteddevices, but Win just overwrites it. I cannot force windows to use select approved drive letters. So then I thought I would script something using subst or mountvol, but WMI will not report the removalable media, instead it…

Problem Comes Up After Updating
by Guest RN1- 3 replies

I am working on WinXP Pro (SP2). Day before yesterday, I updated my computer by navigating to Tools--->Windows Update in IE6. The updation was successful but strangely after that the software I use for connecting to the Net no longer opens up. When the software opens it shows a screen saying "Launching..." after which I am supposed to enter my username & password but now, the "Launching..." screen comes up for around 2 seconds after which it disappears i.e. the next screen to enter username & password does not show up. I decided to uninstall the updates which were installed day before yesterday from the Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs) but the …

Shrunken non-expandable windows xp boxes
by Guest Beagleboy- 0 replies

Help. About 6 months ago, my Windows message boxes shrunk, cutting off info and text to the right and bottom, or just compressing the info to the point it can't be read. Last December, I ran SFC /SCANNOW, and it seemed to fix the problem; however, the boxes shrunk back after a couple of weeks. I have taken some screen shots if that is helpful. I am using Windows XP (home) SP2 on a Dell Dimension 4600, with a Dell 1800FP monitor. The display is at 96 DPI (Normal), the resolution is at 1024x768, at Highest (32 bit), and the message box font is Tahoma 8. I'm using Zone Alarm firewall, AVG7.5, Sypware Blaster, Ad-Aware 2007, Spybot-SD, and Spy Sweeper (until 0…

Hi, I'm sure that this problem has been answered somewhere before but I'm afraid I can't find it. I initially get Error 2738. Could not access VBScript run time for custom action., when I try to run the program which updates my phone software. The fix found on a numbar of sites is to register the dll. This is when I get the error DllRegisterServer in vbscript.dll failed. return code was: 0x80004005. I am logged on as network administrator when I try to run regsvr32. Where to frome here? -- AlanR
