network security and access
by Guest gordon- 1 reply

Hi I would like to allow some users of computers in my home network to access certain folders and to deny other uses. I have 6 Xp based machines that use wired and wireless connections. I have a workgroup called MSHOME, my router is dlink DSL G604T. I have disabled the simple sharing so I can provide different permissions to users, and that works for users on this machine but I dont know how to do this for users that will connect from other machines in the network. When I try to find users to add, I cannot change the location to find their details from this machine. For example, one of the machines is called FEGEXP - how can I give a user of th…

Hi, Myself and others are having an issue on another Microsoft newsgroup with the "New Question"'s "Notify me of replies" feature. We are not getting notified. A moderator in that group asked if I could post to another newsgroup and see if I get an email notification from that group. This is the reason for my post today. Could you please reply to this post (for testing purposes)? Fyi, I have checked the "Notify me of replies" checkbox now. Thank you for your assistance. Regards, Bret

General instructions to re-install Windows XP
by Guest tcarp- 18 replies

I'm on the journey to learn about doing a WinXP full install. I've actually done this once (without choice) on my laptop when attempting to upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro. As I've been doing research on the web, it appears doing a periodic full reinstall of Win isn't such a bad idea. My question is about the process. The way I did it I had to reinstall all Windows upgrades and then the applications and upgrades after the Win install. I also had to make settings like Outlook email accounts, etc. Not such a big deal but for weeks after there were little omissions (Adobe Reader, irfanview, etc.) that I had to reinstall. So the process generally was…

Virtual PC 2007 keyboard stops responding
by Guest Jiri Dohnal- 11 replies

Hello, I have a strange problem - after some time my Virtual PC 2007's (version 6.0.156.0) keyboard stops responding in windowed mode. I have to switch to fullscreen mode where the keyboard responds again. Switching back to windowed mode stops it responding again and vice versa. The only way is to restart Virtual PC (not only a windows XP session but also close the console). The time after which it happens is various, mainly after longer inactivity time, maybe the screenserver plays a role because it happens always after returning back from the screensaver mode. Anyone having the same problems? Thanx ahead.

OEM Reactivation on a new system - Upgrade or full retail?
by Guest Bill Mathews- 16 replies

I have Win XP Pro in an OEM version that came with my current system. I'm thinking about replacing the motherboard to get increased system performance, which would require a reactivation of Windows. As I understand it, an OEM version of Windows is tied to the original system in a way that prevents it from being reactivated on what Windows would see as a new system - i.e., one with a new motherboard. So I'm assuming I'd need to buy a new copy of Windows. So, 3 questions: 1. Which retail version of Windows XP Pro would I need to buy? The upgrade, or a full version? 2. Should I install the new copy of Windows before or after I do the mobo upgrade? 3.…

Want Explorer.exe to launch when connecting digital camera....
by Guest Guitarmakermark- 0 replies

Hi, Folks.... When I connect my Nikon Coolpix S550 camera via usb to my computer, (xp home sp2,) I get a dialog asking me to choose between Scanners and Cameras Wizard and another imaging handling program. Problem is, I don't want either of these two programs to launch by default when the camera is connected; I want only Windows Explorer to launch, so that I may treat the camera as just another drive in which to choose which files to transfer. Do I need to edit the Registry to fix this, or is there something else to try. If a registry tweak is called for, can someone please instruct me? I'm familiar with editing the registry. Thanks! Mark

I am fixing a friends laptop that has xp pro. I put a mini wireless pci card in it. He has forgotten his username/password to log in . He used it on a network so if I try to click cancel it doesn't bypass the log in screen. I have tried safemode and windows but can't get past the screen. He doesn't remember the admin password or his. Is there a way to get past this? Thanks, John

I cannot print documents from XP programs (Word converted from WordPerfect); and the document freezes up (not responding message) and I have to close it. It's not the printer; i've reinstalled the driver and did a test page and it worked. I also had printed stuff before it decided not to print anymore. I gotta get some resumes out!
