The "remove hardware" icon on my toolbar decides to hide sometimes, making it hard to safely dismount my external disk. How do I get it back or otherwise dismount the disk? Thanks -- Al Dykes News is something someone wants to suppress, everything else is advertising. - Lord Northcliffe, publisher of the Daily Mail

The computer is on XPSP2 and is a member of a domain. At random times it will not open a subdirectory within a network share. This only happens on this machines and at random times. There are no entries in Event Viewer nor are any errors returned through Explorer. So here is basically what happens. Say I want to get to R:\My Dept\Files\Whatever I open R:\My Dept with no issues, but then when I double click on Files, Explorer will flash to the Files dorectory then go back to the My Dept directory. I have also tried entering the full path in the address bar and get the same result. This isn't limited to one directory either, when this happens it affect…

About a month ago, my drag and drop became unreliable. Now, sometimes when I reboot, it will work for one or two drag and drops, but after that it doesn't work. It doesn't work on the desktop or within programs. I tried the fix provided by TaurArian on this forum for a similar problem, but it didn't work. -- That was Kelly's tweak Line #233 on http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm I'm tired of working around this and would like my drag and drop back. -- Mark

Laptop AC Adapter and Laptop Battery Question
by Guest Justin- 11 replies
The AC adapter to a HP zd8000 laptop is broken and needs to be replaced. HP however nolonger sells the AC adapter but sells a number of other AC adapters for the zd8000. My question is, would it be okay to use one of these other AC adapters with the current laptop battery? i.e. Does the AC Adapter need to match the laptop battery it's connected to.

Hi, I keep getting a blue screen for the past couple of weeks and have no idea why. I have XP on my computer; have not installed any new hardware in months. Only thing that has changed is a newer version of Norton antivirus. Un-installed and re-installed Symantec yesterday, but got a beautiful blue screen on start-up this morning. Error message is: "After you install a new hardware device or new software, Windows XP may continuously restart, or you may receive an error message on a blue screen View products that this article applies to. Recently, I have run into a problem with Windows Explorer (WE), whenever I click on the "File" option on the title bar, Explorer crashes with the message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." The error report contains; AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156 ModName: zmshext.dll ModVer: 4.0.2.75 Offset: 0003c963 I have submitted the error reports. I realize this group doesn't deal with this but please bear with me. I have a Dell Dimension 8200 SP2 with XP, a 140gb hard drive with 132gb free space and 1024 RAM and Jedi Knight, Jedi Academy is the only game I have installed on my system. Recently, I decided to uninstall it which I did, or thought so. However when I check the Add/Remove programs it's still there. I checked the Recycle bin and there was a Jedi folder there so I clicked restore, but the problem is that it won;t let me do anything now. Whenever I insert the disk it gives me this message: Assertion Failed:" LecSetup_GetSetup(g_Env["DataDir"],&m_plecSetup)"! File: Source\lfx_System.cp…

Daylight Savings Time change not observed
by Guest Mark R. Thompson- 2 replies

I have the "Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings changes" checkbox checked, but it says that it is Pacific Standard Time. I can change the time manually, but it periodically reverts to the incorrect time. I have no idea why this is happening because even when I try to download the listed update it says it cannot run it because it or a newer version has already been run. Please help.

mysql dump batch file stopped working.
by Guest Rob- 4 replies
Hello, I had someone make a batch file for me that would backup mysql db and recently it stopped working and I don't know the cause and how to fix it. The bat file has not changed so it must have been a system change. The error I get is right after the dump code and it says The system cannot find the path specified. As I mentioned I can't remember editing the batch file and the path definitely exists cine I can manually navigate to the directory in the command prompt. REM @echo off for /f "tokens=1" %%i in ('date /t') do set DATE_DOW=%%i for /f "tokens=2" %%i in ('date /t') do set DATE_DAY=%%i for /f %%i in ('echo %date_day:/=-%') do set DATE_DAY=%%…

Remove Pre-welcome Screen Wallpaper.
by Guest Indicium- 5 replies
Hi, Recently, I re-installed Windows XP. However, after starting the PC (after the boot) just before the welcome screen the default wallpaper is displayed. In my case, the "Dell-wallpaper" appeared. In the past, after the boot no wallpaper appeared. After starting the PC the normal light-blue Windows-screen could be seen before the welcome-screen appeared. Question: How can I avoid that the PC shows any wallpaper after the boot just before the welcome screen? I already read the MVPS-"Change the Windows Logon screen background color" (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/logonbg.htm), "Customize the logon screen wallpaper, screensaver and other settings usin…

Windows XP Logo lights up slowly at Startup
by Guest beto- 3 replies

Recently I noticed when I turn on my PC with Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2 the black screen shows up with the _ at the top it stays there for a bit, then the Windows XP with the logo thats loads right before going to the sign in screen shows up dim very lightly lit, then slowly lightens brighter to normalcy. It used to show the Logo screen loading completely lit up and bright no slowly lighting up as it loads. Could this be a program I recently installed affecting this? Or maybe a spyware? Thanks Beto

Hidden Files Won't Unhide
by Guest Gman- 9 replies
I've looked high and low for the answer to this question but if I place a file in a folder, hide that file, change the folder options to not show hidden files the file is hidden. When I go back to set the folder options to show hidden files and unhide the files they never reappear, if you do a search for the hidden files in the folder, the files are there in the folder. Oddly something I never noticed is when you go to tools>folder options>view, both do not show and show hidden files radio buttons are checked, unchecking them to show the hidden files has no effect. I've tried restoring the system defaults for folder options, I've tried also unhidin…

Profiles Missing or Not Visible
by Guest Thomas M.- 4 replies

XP SP2 I work in second-tier support and we have a first-tier Network Administrator who is reporting something which I have never seen. He is attempting to setup a new machine for a new employee, and he claims that when he logs on to the computer with the employee's user ID, that no profile gets created. As far as I know, that's not possible. We haven't actually gotten our hands on the machine yet, so maybe this post is a little premature as it could end up being something simple. But I thought I would pose the question anyway just so that once we *do* get a look at the machine we will have some ideas of what to look for. Is there a way that the p…
