Can someone tell me where on my laptop the PreShared Key for a wireless network is stored? I imagine it is in the registry somewhere but that is just a wild guess. And it is no big deal, just curious. Thank you.

transferring Windows XP onto a rebuild computer
by Guest Bill in Massachusetts- 13 replies

I purchased from Dell a Dimension 8200 in 2001. I purchased Windows XP professional with it.I am going to rebuild the computer with a new motherboard, CPU, memory, and video card. I want to keep the same hard disk with the operating system and other software. Will this work, or will Windows think that I'm trying to put it on another computer and prevent me from using it? If so,is there a workaround?

Fonts disappear from Office apps after reboot but remain in OS??
by Guest Michelle- 0 replies

So - I'm at my wits end - any suggestions would be appreciated!! On an XP SP2 machine with Office 2003 SP2 we install a true-type font and it works just fine. We can see it in Fonts folder as well as use it in Office products. We logoff/login - same thing - works fine. We restart system - this font is no longer available in Office products but are still visible in Fonts folder. This happens with many fonts that we install - so it's not font specific. We've rebuilt the device twice and the problem reoccurs for this pocket of users. We've had them login to test machines and it works fine (ruling out ID related issue). I've logged into his machine…

Hi, I'm running Windows XP Pro, SP 3, v. 3311. My user icons are no longer appearing on the welcome screen. I can log in by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del twice and using the Win2K style login. (So can all the other users.) After I log in, I started up the Control Panel and double-clicked on "User Accounts," and I get the message "Windows cannot open the User Accounts control panel." If I check in Documents and Settings, I can still see all the users. Other discussion groups make it sound like a re-install is in order. Before I go to that extreme, I am wondering if there are any other thoughts about it? -Rajah

can't set .jpg MetaData over network
by Guest windsurferLA- 0 replies

I have two WinXP-pro SR/2 machines connected by hardwired Ethernet. A scanner is connected to one; a hard drive to hold files is connected to the other. Directory on hard drive is marked for simple file sharing and authorizing other network users to change files. Files created by the scanner can be saved to hard drive without problem. Once saved, they can be renamed without problem. However... MetaData on .jpg files cannot be edited / added from first machine with the scanner, although once metadata is added to the .jpg files via the second machine containing the hard drive, the metadata can be displayed on the first machine with the scanner. Is this…

I am trying to schedule tasks. Specifically "disk clean up and defrag" to perform weekly. I get the message, " The new task has been created, but may not run because the account information could not be set. The specific error is: 0x80070005. Access is denied. Try using the task page browse button to locate the application. I tried one of the hot fixes and it didn't do anything.

XP Office Viewer ... I have XP Home & Son has XP Office 2007
by Guest UKUser007- 10 replies

Hello We recently bought our son a laptop for schoolwork which had to have XP Office and today he sent a .docx file over for me to print but it wouldn't open as I only have XP Home with Works Suite. It took me to a download page and I downloaded the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003 and it installed. On the download page it said that I should be able to view a list of documents and .docx would be one of them. I went to Start, All Programmes, clicked on Office Word Viewer and tried to open the document (.docx) but it wanted me to do more downloads and this is where I stopped as I wasn't sure what I was doing. I already have on my computer the xl vi…

CPU 100%
by Guest Alden- 5 replies

Hi, my CPU is 100% all the time, from the second I log on. When I first got it, my computer was running XP Home AMD Processor, until I got a virus from one of those electric picture frames (which when I plugged it in it formatted my hard drive). Now I have installed XP Pro. setup for an i386 (Intel) processor when I actually have an AMD. Could this be why it is 100% all the time, or do I have software making it that high? I'm running: Apache 2.2.2; MySQL + Administrator; IIS 5.1; Nero MediaHome Server (rarely); Winamp Beta Orb Server (rarely); MailEnable server; and Remote Desktop. I'm using less than half of my ram and page file. Is windows misreadi…

Skype on all 4 users of windows...
by Guest Dan Auclair- 1 reply

Hi all, Is it possible to have one Skype account (main account) available to all 4 windows users of same computer? I have home edition and would like that whatever family member is logged-in to windows(with individual user accounts) that person can answer a "skype call". (Just like i have word 2007 installed and it is available to ALL users of the computer not just the current user). I can't get skype to do that. I don't want each member to have their own skype account i want to use skype like a house phone - anybody can pick-up the phone when it rings, so i want anybody to answer a skype call regardless of what windows user is logged-in. thanks Dan

Auto updater
by Guest rene.ellegaard@dl-rea.dk- 1 reply

From Windows XP Service Pack 2 the auto updater was introduced. This functionality getting updates automatically when a new version is available is especially nice for the end customer. In our next generation software package it's in the plan to have an auto updater automatically taking care of the update of the program. We do not have experiences with auto updaters so the question is if we should develop this yourself or use something already existing. Some of the existing auto updaters is client server based. Other are not. We intent to use the auto updater for 1. Automatically install new updates when they are available on a central server. 2. Inform the…

HANDLE, THREAD, PROCESS System Limits
by Guest neilsolent- 2 replies

How can I look up the absolute HANDLE, THREAD and PROCESS limits of Windows? (By this, I mean the maximum numbers that can ever be reached in the "Totals" box on the Performance panel of Task Manager). Ideally I would like to get these theoretical maximum values from a script - so I need something like a registry key, or perfmon counter or WMI object. Many thanks for your time! Neil.

Hello, I am looking for a license component which I can easily integrate in my existing C-applications. I would like to offer trial-versions of my applications via my website for potential clients to download. So the purpose of this license component would be to control which features of the application should be disabled after the trial period has expired. The potential clients can use the application will all its features for a 30-day trial period after which selected features of the application will be limited/disabled. If the client decides that he would like to buy the application, he can go to my website and fill out and submit a form. The client …

Non-responsive printers
by Guest Grampa Gene- 5 replies

I'm running Windows XP on an HP Pavilion 7955. I had a non-restorable hard drive crash last week, possibly due to registerycleanerxp.com which bombarded my computer with pop-ups constantly. I installed a 160 gig hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP disks. Also installed a spyware and an antivirus program. My Epson Stylus Photo R320 printer, and Canon BJC-4550 do not respond, although their windows show that there is data in the queues. I've tried restarting the Print Spooler in services.msc to no avail. Any ideas?

Delay Launching With Shortcut Keys
by Guest John Ciccone- 11 replies
I have a new machine. It's stable, fast. If I run a program by doubleclicking its icon, or selecting it from the Start menu groups, all is well. It launches immediately as expected. However, if I launch the same apps using shortcut keys that I've assigned via the icon's general properties, there is a delay of 12 to 15 seconds. This happens with any app. Any idea why the delay, or more importantly, how to eliminate the delay? Thank you.

I have several machines that have had people playing around with the ATTRIB command. Now, I have some files that are no longer hidden like they should be. I have a batch file that seems like it should work but in fact does not. Any guidance would be great! Below is an example. I just want to search recursively through the current folder and its child directories and run a command if the file is found.... This is one line of code.... FOR /F %%I IN ("DESKTOP.INI") DO IF EXIST %%~nI ATTRIB +S +H DESKTOP.INI /S
