Autoplay is copying files where?
by Guest Bill in Co.- 11 replies
I've pretty much disabled this thing, but on occasion I slip up and forget, such as when I plug in a new USB device. As soon as that happens, a screen pops up and it starts copying files somewhere (who knows where), so I immediately hit the Cancel key to stop it. And then it stops, naturally. Who knows if it actually copied any files, and if so, where they were copied to. And then I go through and customize it to TAKE NO ACTION (which I think should be the *default action* for any new devices being plugged in). Anyway, my question is, where was it trying to copy these files to? And could it have if I hit the cancel button in time (like two seco…

Why do utility companies make you log on to view your bill? An email is secure enough for me. We are talking about a utility bill, not a CIA document.

Hello: I have Windows XP open license version. This is the "English/Multilanguage" disc as well as the "Multi Language Pack". Can I use these discs to install the OS completely in French? (That is, I want the user interface and applications to use French.) If so, how do I do this? I don't see a point to select this during install. Thanks.

problems with daylight savings time change
by Guest jiggles- 4 replies
The time has always been correct on my computer. Since the recent change to daylight savings the time on my computer did not change. I tried updating from some of the different default servers but my time is still 1 hour behind. I also tried changing it is the BIOS which also correctly changed in in windows, however as soon as it does and autmomatic synchronization the time again gets changed incorrectly. I have verified that my time zone is correct and I have the option checked to automatically adjust for daylight savings time. It does appear to be a time zone issue but I am at a loss as to why. For now I have the auto sync turned off and have manua…

File and folder names are truncated illogically
by Guest skribb- 0 replies
Hi A few names of my files and folders are truncated (in the "Filena..." fashion). This occurs in list view, thumbnail view and large icon view. They do not seem to be truncated in the normal sense. Let me explain: if you click on them, the whole filename will NOT show. So, if I have two folders with similar names, for example, it is impossible for me to find out which is which if I don't open it. First, I tried fixing it by enlarging the horizontal icon space (I even tried 150). No dice. Then, I tried resizing the icon font to a smaller size just to see if there'd be any difference. I'll take "Unreal Tournament 3" as an example for this. Before resi…

SP3 for Windows XP 64?
by Guest boe- 2 replies

Hello, I've given up on Vista ever running as fast as XP can even on the best hardware so I'm going to put XP on the system I'm building. It is a Quad core with 4 gigs of ram. I've never tried XP 64 so I thought I'd give it a try. Will SP3 be available for it at the same time as SP3 is for 32 XP?

I am running Windows xp Professional, I had some problem with my network ( DSL) connection, was not able to brows internet. while I was working to fix the problem, I open the network connection, there was nothing in it, usually you should see local area connections in the window, but I don’t have anything in the window, on the left side I have create new connection, set up a home small office network, change windows firewall settings, and all icons. I am using a net gear wireless adaptor, and in that case I should see a wireless network connection in under this window, I don’t have that even, but my wireless card is working. Can't see wireless networks
by Guest Moonbarker Osbourne- 5 replies

The laptop of a relative of mine can't see what wireless networks are available. The wireless does work, they can go anywhere on the 'net they want to, it's just that they can't see what wireless networks are available When I right click on the wireless icon in the tray or in start/settings/network/connections and select "view wireless connections," this is what I see where the available wireless networks should be listed. (there are no programs capable of managing the wireless connection). How do I fix this? http://cloudchasershaconage.furtopia.org/temp/wireless.jpg

Folder tree in "Look in" area keeps closing
by Guest Verna Walker- 0 replies
Hello! I have an annoying problem that I've experienced not only on my computer, but on a friend's computer also, regarding the folder tree in the "Look In" window. This problem doesn't occur every time but rather frequently. Regardless of the software program I'm using to access this window to open a graphic or file, as soon as I click on the down arrow in the Look In area of the window and start to move up or down the folder tree, the drop down window closes that shows the folders and I'm back with just the down arrow. When I click on it again all the folders are expanded and when I try to move the scroll bar up or down the folder tree, it immediate…

lost my F drive
by Guest Richard Mitnick- 3 replies

I have an external hard drive that I use for mp3 files. It used to show up as F:\New Volume in Windows Explorer. I recently did a major cleanup of this computer, temps, registry, and defrag. Now, my F drive does not show up on Windows Explorer. Mind you, it is there and it works. When I launch a music file in WMP, Real, or Winamp, the music plays, and it is all on this drive. Also, I did a search on My Computer for "F:" and it came up. I quickly pulled a shortcut off to the desktop so that I could access the drive. I just added files to it which did show up in WMP as they are supposed to. But, I can not access the drive in Windows Explorer. How can …

Now, I just did a clean install of Windows XP--I then uploaded all the updates from Microsoft Update...apparently Realtek was part of the updates from the microsoft site. Microsoft told me it was downloaded properly, but there is no sound. I unistalled it, so I could reinstall and then attempted to download Realtek AC97 Audio Driver from their official site and during setup I get two error messages: "unable to launch setcdfmt.exe"and "alcxwdm.cat.not found!" I am not sure what to do next??

I ran into this problem about 2 years ago and found the fix for it. But I just ran into it again, and I don't find anything that works. I found this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891/ But the 2 updates that are recommended don't install, saying the Agent is already installed. Does anyone know of the fix for this? Thanks

by Guest Bob- 5 replies

I cannot burn CDs on my XP PC because every CD I put in states it is full. Even when I put in a blank CD, properties state it is full. Are there some settings (i.e. BIOS) I should check? I had somebody burn one file on a blank CD on a different XP PC. When checking properties, there is space available on the CD (CD not finalized). But when I put the CD on my XP PC, CD is full. Thanks, Bob

Hi, I am having trouble right clicking on images in Internet Explorer 7. I am running WIN XP pro and I have done all the updates and virus and trojan scans that I can think of and everytime I right click in IE7 to save a picture from a web site IE7 shuts down. As IE7 shuts down the hard drive has activity on it like it is loading a program off the hard drive and it forces IE7 to shut down. Has anyone had this problem or do you know a solution to sove the problem? Oh I have also uninstalled IE7 and reinstalled it and the same thing happens. Chuck
