Interesting Behavior after update to SP3 when restoring the Address Bar optioin in Taskbar Hello, I posted a question in the "Update" newsgroup requesting info on how to get the address bar option back on the taskbar after the Windows XP SP3 update eliminated it. I received links to various sites that offer solutions to my query as well as a polite notification that I posted to the wrong group. The solutions offered were very helpful except for one slight hitch. I could only get the address bar back in my profile which is an administrator using any of the solutions. None of the other accounts whether administrator or non-administrator could rep…

Unable to communicate with Lexmark printer
by Guest holliss- 2 replies

Strange thing happened. I am now unable to communicate with my Lesmark printer. My computer shows the printer in my listed printers. I have unplugged/plugged USB cable, and power supply. I've also tried USB cables from other printers that are still working. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the printer many times. I always get the same response from the printer when I try to print a test page. The message is "Cannot Communicate". For all intents and purposes the printer should be working. The only thing I can come up with is microsoft XP auto updates. On June 10th 2008 several updates downloaded automatically. Is it possible these downloads could hav…

...file does not have a program associated with it...

I've been encountering the message cited in the Subject header on a particular system (WinXP Pro SP2) for several months, now. I believe it was caused by remediation of a virus infection. In general, on a properly configured system, if you Shift+Right-click, you can select "Open with..." on an otherwise unassociated file and choose an appropriate program when you encounter the cited error message. I'll use a particular example with which I'm having trouble, the CONFIG.SYS file. On a properly configured system, by merely right-clicking on this file in Windows Explorer, you get an "Open With..." option. You can then follow through with this process to open t…

Always in safemode
by Guest Dick Johnson- 2 replies

When selecting the check box for a normal bootup using MSCONFIG the system always boots up in safemode. The only way to eliminate it is to deselect the check box for safemode under the BOOT.INI tab. For some reason when selecting the NORMAL boot from the General Tab the safemode check box is also selected.

How to prevent PC from going to standby ever?
by Guest Kovis- 4 replies

I have a pretty recent HP laptop and have deactivated all power saving settings in the control panel. However, if no one has logged on to Windows, after some time the laptop still goes to standby. If a user has been logged on, standby never occurs. How to prevent this from happening? BIOS doesn't seem to contain any settings related to this.

Should I update to SP3?
by Guest Paradoxdb3- 16 replies

I am currently running XP Pro SP2. I have some customizations on my machine which add a transparent recycle bin on the desktop (like Vista's - the program is called Vista Customization Pack) and a modified uxtheme.exe (I think that's the name of the file) which allows me to apply 3rd party themes. If I upgrade to SP3, will some of these modifications be reversed and lost?

I ran a checkdisk recently, not via the Cmd prompt, but a link on the MS site. Spybot gave me one of those incomprehensible Allow/deny choices and I probably guessed wrongly. Ever since I get a checkdisk every time I boot. How can I cancel it?

change multiple monitor display display, one not working
by Guest rhambrock65- 7 replies

my laptop display went out and I hooked up the monitor from my desktop. This was working fine for a while. I rebooted to recently and for some reason the disply settings changed. So I went into the display settings. While trying to change the resolution back to where it was, I inadvertently selected the multiple monitor setting and applied it. Now, nothing comes up on the monitor. It appears to be off screen to the left, but since the laptop display does not function, I cannot see any of this. How can I change this back if all the windows screen pop up to the left where i cannot see them?

I have a Toshiba X205-SLI-2 laptop. It came with Vista loaded and I got only restoration DVD with it. I buy WinXp 32bit pro OEM and for some reason when I try to install (dua lBoot) it tells me no hard drives detected. I have x 2 Hitachi 160GB HD (specs/http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/en/menuitem.dac393208bfae6f199558fe7eac4f0a0/) SATA. I remember when I buy it @ newegg (the laptop) one review saying something about this problem witn dual booting but I went back and the comment is gone.
