XP Home and dual or quad CPU's
by Guest Pete Carr- 4 replies

I have heard that XP Home Edition did not support CPU's with dual or quad processing. Only XP Pro does etc. How much of this is true now that single CPU's have dual or quad core's? Is there any difference between XP Home and XP Pro in these new CPU's? In Task manager it shows four boxes on XP home with an Intel Quad core CPU. Does that mean XP Home IS using all four of the quad cores on the CPU? All info welcome. Thanks

Reinstalling XP on clean computer with OEM COA
by Guest im_gregory- 10 replies

I've recently purchased a HP computer that had its hard drive formatted clean. There is a XP Professional 1 COA sticlker on the case. I'm trying to reinstall XP professional back onto this machine. But when I enter the key code, the installation is saying the key is invaild. Its my understanding that as long as the COA sticker is on the machine I'm authorized to reinstall Windows back on it. Can anyone help me with this? -- Forum Begineer

>> How can I force my pc to boot from CD ?
by Guest Ch33zst34k- 6 replies
This is strange - I have some kind of driver issue which, combined with other things, is forcing me to do a fresh install of XP. Here's my problem - when I boot with the XP cd in the drive, it doesn't boot. What does happen is that I get the Bios POST and then the XP splash screen. At the splash screen, XP hangs and never boots - the Knight Rider loader just scans and scans - my goal is simply to get XP to boot from the cd so I can reformat. I have gone into the setup and made sure boot sequence has cd first - I have even tried disabling all the hard drives with no success. Additionally I cannot F8 into the boot screen either. Any help on this ? Gerry

When I run the Time Zone tool on Windows XP Pro I get an error message that says: "Update cannot be installed as a newer or same timezone update has already been installed on the system." I have Windows update on and have all the updates. I don't know where there is a timezone loaded as it doesn't change. The daylight savings time box is checked but the computer still stays on standard time. How can I fix so I get daylight savings time on the computer? -- Sandy G

Windows standards for keyboard interface
by Guest Rick- 5 replies
Hi, is there a Microsoft web site somewhere that lists some of the Windows standards for an application's keyboard interface? I'm particularly interested to see something indicating that the right context-menu key (I don't know what it's called -- it's to the right of the right Windows Logo key) should display the same context menu as a right mouse-click. Thanks.

100% cpu utilization during save as
by Guest itsupport@jdsweid.com- 4 replies
- 85 views
I'm wondering if anyone here can help me with this. When I'm typing a filename in the Save As dialog box in Excel 2003, excel.exe shoots up to 100% CPU utilization and it takes a second or two for the letters I've typed to show up. This only happens when I'm trying to save to a network location. The same issue comes up in Word 2003 and Powerpoint 2003, but not in any other windows applications. Any ideas? Thanks --Cam

How to remove hugely long WinXP menu items from right click on JPEG
by Guest Donna Ohl- 4 replies

How can I remove half the useless menus that show up when I right click on a JPEG in Windows XP? When I right click on a JPG, the menu items are so long that they require scrolling both up (off screen) and down (off screen) in order to select some of the menus (e.g., copy and delete). How can I remove some of the JPG right-click WinXP menu items? Donna

Blue screen on entry, invitation to update on exit
by Guest Stephen Ibbs- 2 replies

I have two problems with Windows XP Home Edition SP2 and I would be grateful if somebody could help me. Every time I turn on the computer I get a blue screen with a warning advising me that it is checking the file system. One the disks needs to be checked for consistency. It then counts down and if I don't press the spacebar the check then takes place. Whether I let it continue or not, it doesn't matter and eventually Windows loads up and everything is fine. At the same time that this happened I noticed that every time I choose to turn off the computer the 'Turn off' option has been modified to show that important updates will be installed. Again I have chosen this …

33 processes and then......
by Guest hpoincare- 4 replies

My VP has a new IBM (factory image) XP Operating system, 2GB Ram, plenty of speed. Stock applications like Office 2003, visio, adobe reader. Nothing extraordinary. However on restart of the PC, after login, she gets a blank desktop. It will stay blank until the cows come home (or longer, we still don't know if it will ever resolve). By hitting ctl-alt-del I'm able to bring up task manager and see that there are 33 processes that loaded and are running. Always 33. If I log her off (using the ctrl-alt-del) and login as another user (both are admins), it comes right up. If I then go back to her profile it also comes right back up. The same is true if I…

Change to XP OEM version without reformatting?
by Guest Beau Newcomb- 3 replies

One of my end-users in all their glorious brilliance decided to reinstall XP Pro SP1 (a version they had from home) and in the process also removed the lenovo recovery partition. They've been using it like this for a couple weeks now, have all their apps, etc, but they are complaining that windows is going to expire soon. I know if I had been able to do a normal restore from the restore partition, XP would be automatically activated. I'm wondering if it's possible to run a repair using a lenovo disk to get the right version on there that won't expire or require activation? What are my options?

Rebooting after installing Windows Updates
by Guest Humpty Dumpty- 3 replies
After installing Windows Updates which need restarting, and OK the dialog box ("restart now") I get the start menu and no option works (neither safe mode, nor "last known configuration", nor "start windows normally"). Very anguishing, indeed. I tried closing the dialog box and restarting normally, to no avail. Same scenario. Fortunately, after several reboots, at last windows starts. I avoid "last known configuration", because I am afraid this could take me back before the updates were installed. What is wrong? I fear the moment when the start menu will hang forever. TIA Humpty
