XP Home not working. Unable to boot into safe mode. Part of the way it gives error messages. Tried to put in the Windows CD. Boot from CD. Part of the way, error message and hang. What could be wrong? If the hard disk is bad, why should it read part of the CD? Could the motherboard be bad?

Please recommend me a good standard for my home wireless network

Dear friends: Please recommend me a good standard for my home wireless network. I want to update my wireless router and I am a little confused about the standards "A", "B", "G", "N",....... etc. The conditions are that my new router should adhere to the fastest standard for home wireless networks up to now, and that my computers, ranging from a three months old MacBook Pro to a four years old IBM Thinkpad should be able to connect to it. Please recommend me a *standard*, not a router brand and model, who could not be available in my Country. Thanks a lot again!!!!! Thanks Juan I. Steady State Validation required
by Guest brucemc777- 13 replies

Oh great. Late, but not completely lost, I just read about "Steady State" and jumped over to MS downloads to try it out. Validation required. OK, I have a number of legal XP systems in my home each very well PAID for (though I am having problems making ends meet, I am glad Bill is using his money to help the world population survive). I allow the download, run Validation, and it tells me it is an absolete version. Can someone out there that understands this stuff and the reasons as to why we deal with it please let me know how I should go about then getting validation to work so I can get Steady State?

Flash drive freezes my computer
by Guest Vanillaman- 9 replies

I just bought a flash drive for my WinXP SP2 Home edition. As soon as I inserted it, my computer froze and locked up. I've tried it in all my additional USB ports and it remains the same. Even if I insert it prior to boot up, Windows stops and freezes. My webcam works fine and the memory stick light comes on, but the `New Hardware Detected' indicator doesn't even show. I don't have anything else taking up USB ports other than my webcam. I've tried it in other computers, not my own, and it worked fine. This seems to be a mystery, which nobody seems to have an answer for?????

I want to install software into only the Administrator's user account. (As in only mine, and not the kids !!) Can I choose this when I am prompted to "select destination folder" during the installation, or do I have to install it, and then remove it from the other accounts? If you know how to do this, please send instructions !! (detailed if possible) *note* I did try to install and then move into "owner" however it still remained on desktop of other user.... I quite possibly did this wrong !!??

by Guest Bruce.- 4 replies

2 XP computers using different domain names, Dfw and Home. On Dfw is a computer Computer1 and I want to share its My Documents so that a user on Computer2 in Home can see it. So on Computer1, I open Windows Explorer, go down to My Documents, right click and select Properties and then Sharing. Share this folder is selected. Share Name -> My Documents Press Permissions (to give the user on Computer2 rights) Up pops a Select Users or Groups box that I have no idea what to do with. No matter what I type in the box at the bottom it refuses to take it. None of the examples shown work such as Home/MyUser The "From This Location" button lists Comput…

Open Window in Explorer in XP
by Guest John- 2 replies

I have a constant problem on one of my XP Pro workstations. The bottom of the open window's Status Bar is not checked when the View menu is clicked. I can click Status Bar, and the Status Bar appears on the bottom as it is supposed to, but as soon as I even change folders within the same window, the Status Bar goes away, and I must click on View and Status Bar again to get the Status bar. Could someone help me restore this feature of Windows Explorer (Status Bar defaults as checked)? Thanks, John

HI. I have what I hope will be an easy question. I am attempting to repair my XP Home installation, and when I get to the screen that asks if I want to install or repair, I choose repair and them it asks me for a password. I hit enter, and it goes to the C drive designation. What do I do after that? I don't see an option to repair. Thanks in advance for your help. The XP version is 1a and I have a Dell Optiplex GX 270

CD/DVD tray will not open
by Guest stjon- 8 replies

My DVD writer is behaving very strangely, and it does not appear to be a machanical problem because it can open/close on occasion. The tray sometimes opens immediately whilst system is booting, but the button won't make it close. If it is closed, the button does nothing, but it can be opened with a paperclip after a while. If a disc is inserted, it is not read. I've noticed that when it DOES close now, it goes back in very rapidly, whereas before all this started the opening and closing were both 'normal' and unhurried. I have recently downloaded a number of video editing programs (which are all rubbish, but that's a separate issue!) and I now have pop up…

remove system tray icons
by Guest dtp1965@gmail.com- 4 replies
Last few weeks I've installed and uninstalled some trial software. Now I've noticed viewing the system tray icons in the start bar, that there are still some system tray icons present which should not be there. They are in the not active list. I'm sure they're not working (turning them on , and in doeing so not hiding them, doesn't make them appear). They seem to be leftovers of programs I've uninstalled. But how can I completely remove them? I can't see which program they'd belong to. They aren't present in the startup list of msconfig as far as I can tell. They are only present on my windows account so in regedit it's somewhere in 'current user'. So where in …

IE Defender HELP
by Guest johnnyhaskins357- 3 replies

When navigating in the windows environment (the problem is not presenting in other programs), clicks on links or any other page movement generates an enduring error message that is masked like Windows software. The message says: you computer has been infected by some unknown Trojan horse. It’s dangerous for your system. Critical Files may be lost. Click OK to download the antispiware program (IE Defender). When you click on the ok, your page is re-directed to the IE defender site and your system is supposedly scanned. The scan shows several “virus” that you have. They are: (with the Microsoft Red X shield) Trojan.BetaDivX.Clicker; Trojan.BetaDivX.T…

Windows update causes printer to stop working correctly
by Guest Peter Olcott- 16 replies

Fresh install of windows on a newly formatted hard-drive, always results in this same thing: I install Windows XP Pro on a newly formatted hard-drive, and attach the computer the the network's printer using the [Printers and Faxes] dialogbox. Everything (including printing) works fine before I do any Windows updates. Then I do all the windows updates (including SP2) and test again, now, the print dialogbox, takes 45 seconds (instead of about 1 second) to come up when the [print] menu item is selected, and the print job takes 45 seconds (instead of about 1 second) to begin printing after the [print] button of the print dialogbox is pressed. I have…

Windows Easy Transfer from XP to Vista Help Please
by Guest Deepa- 3 replies

First a comment: I have been finding it maddening difficult to find info on this procedure. Windows seems to assume it's so easy there "aren't gonna be problems!" Have been attempting to transfer the settings from a Dell Machine running XP SP2 to a new machine running Windows Vista Home Premium. Everything appears to be successfully installed. When presented with the selection of the program to run on the Dell we pick "transfer files and settings." Then the first screen "Welcome to Windows Easy Transfer" is presented. Clicking the "next" button goes nowhere. A check with Windows Task Manager shows the application "not to be running." We've trie…
