windows explorer freezing when deleting
by Guest Anandajoti- 2 replies

Dear Friends, For a couple of weeks now I have been experiencing a problem when deleting files in windows explorer (and in Free commander, which I also use). Every time I try to delete a file explorer freezes up and I have to eventually close it with task maanger. When I restart the file(s) have actually been deleted, but of course it's a nuisance every time I need to delete something. I have XP home edition for more than one year and have not been experiencing this problem before. I have checked for spyware/malware but everything appears to be clean. If anyone has any suggestions I would be most grateful...

XP install and SP2
by Guest bcags7- 15 replies

Hello, This may be a dumb question, but I haven't been able to find a clear answer. I'm building a new PC and I've installed Win XP (original, no service packs). I'm trying to follow along in the motherboard manual - it says to install all Windows updates and service packs before installing chipset drivers, etc...For some reason, and I think this is a common problem with my particular motherboard, my onboard ethernet ports are not working, so I cannot install any updates. I have, however, downloaded SP2 and installed it just to see what happens. After hours of screwing around with drivers and installing a PCI NIC card (which didn't work), the ethern…

Gurus, Suddenly my Outlook 2003 emails that I print out to my printer are appearing in a much smaller font than while viewing them on screen. I went into Tools > Options > Mail Format > Fonts > Message fonts and changed 10 pt. to 12 pt. but this didn't increase the font as it appeared on my print outs. What am I doing wrong? -- Spin

I want to setup a shutdown command using schedule. When I run it something comes up on the screen very briefly and then nothing. Shutdown does not run. Could this be a permission issue? I know how to make changes through gpedit.msc when logged in as an administrator but I cannot find anything about shutdown permissions. Thank you.

Computer keeps restarting all the time. Even when I am not on it.
by Guest Kayande- 6 replies

I can't seem to track down why this is happening.I can be sitting here on the ineternet, or even just playing solitaire with nothing else open. It even does it when I leave the computer to go and cook the dinner. It just knocks off and then restarts again. I haven't put anything new on here for years, this has been going on for months, but it seems to be getting worse. Yestarday it rebooted every half and hour all day long. Today it is a bit better, it has only done it about 5 times since 9am. Can you tell me where to find the log to tell me why it is stopping, so that I can try again to find out why this is happening.

What about Image backups of active file systems (TI on XP)
by Guest Al Dykes- 11 replies

I'm using TI on an XPSP2 system. Generally I run the TI under XP and make full images for recovery from disk failures How careful do I have to be about file system activity? I run TI overnight dowing disk-to-disk backup to a USB1 ext disk. I can imagine that my Anti-virus vendor could ship me an update while TI is running. It would install and make many MB of file system changes in the process. It the Right Thing to boot XP as a single user or boot off teh TI CD for a full image backup? (I've done countless "single user" disk backup on Unix systems and made countless file system backups of running systems with NTBackup and done my share of bare-iron …

Windows Caching Programs
by Guest infobound- 10 replies

Here is a wierd one, just wondering if anyone else has ever come across this. I write custome programs for the company I work for. A couple years ago and again recently, I update a program, released it to production and one computer still runs the old exe. Both times my first thought is I released the old exe back into production thinking i had copied the new one. In both cases I recompile the exe and make sure I post out the new exe to the server, but when I fire the new exe from these computers, the computer is displaying the old exe, even thought the old exe is no longer in the folder or anywhere to be launched. I reboot the computers and now the new …

Replacement for 98 sysmon? I want to monitor modem speed
by Guest dave@home.com- 11 replies
Hi, Believe it or not, I just made the jump from 98se to XP. In 98se there was a simple but nice program to monitor various system processes. It was called sysmon.exe and one of the things it could do was monitor the ongoing download speed of the modem. It was quite customizable, and I used it constantly. (I also used it to monitor several other processes.) They were all contained in 1 nice window that I always kept open on the desktop. The only thing I can find in XP is something called task monitor, I've played around with it for several hours, and imho it SUCKS!. Without going into details, I absolutely hate it. Is there another way …

Microsoft Request to Remember Login
by Guest randau- 3 replies
Microsoft's request to remember my Login appears on some of my Login web pages after entering the Login info for the first time. It then auto completes Login info in the future on that web page (as it's suppose to). But on other Login web pages, the Microsoft request to remember my Login never appears. Is there some way of making it appear or manually getting Microsoft to remember a web page Login? Does the web page itself determine whether or not Microsoft will offer to remember the Login info? Some web page Login's have a "remember me" box which I usually check, but doesn't seem to have any effect on whether or not the Microsoft request to remember my L…

Control Panel - Scanner and Cameras - Add device: does not work
by Guest volkerf- 1 reply
I am unable to add a scanner and camera to my XP Prof SP2 system. It seems, that the system is unable to identify any scanner or camera. It is not a problem of the devices, because the devices work on an other system. Also it is not a problem of the usb ports, because other usb devices (printer, sticks, etc) work properly. Differences between the "working" and "not working" system. Working: If I press the "add device" link in the "Scanner and Cameras" folder the device wizard comes up (with and without a plugged in camera/scanner). If I exeucte "wiacmgr", the device wizard comes up, with a plugged in camera/scanner. Not working: If I press the "add d…

fresh install of XP Pro - quick question
by Guest Niteowl- 6 replies

Hi, I just installed a new 300G HD, partitioned it prior to rebooting to install a fresh copy of XP Pro. I have 3 physical drives now, the 2 that were in there were partitioned as C: G: H:, and D: E: F: (not sure why it was like that) Before installing XP I copied All data from D thru H onto the new SATA drive which I had partitioned into I: J: K:, leaving I: as a primary/active partition, and J: and K: as logical drives. When I booted up from the XP CD, I deleted and repartitioned the 2 120G HD's, and also deleted the I: drive and repartitioned it so it would take on the C: nomenclature, which it did. When I started it to formatting, it did th…

USB Device "disabled"
by Guest Looch- 2 replies

Hi All, I have USB credit card reader plugged into a Windows XP SP2 machine. The card reader has an LED that should be on all the time indicating the reader is ready to be used. However if the reader isn't used for a day or so, the LED goes out and the reader will not read. The device still shows up in the device manager (under COM Ports) and if unplug the USB cord and plug it back in the LED comes back on immediately and it is ready to use. I have several other machines that use the same model card reader that work fine. I've swapped the reader and get the same issue. Is there a setting in Windows that can be set to keep USB devices "alive"? Thanks in ad…

"System Idle Process" Using 98% of Resources??? 1 2
by Guest A Baffled User- 25 replies

My HP Pavilion notebook computer, running Windows XP Home SP2 with 512 MB of RAM, has been incredibly sluggish lately though I am using the machine in exactly the same way I always have. It takes an extremely long time to switch between programs that are running when I click on the buttons on the taskbar. Programs that are already running emerge slowly on the screen rather than appear instantly as they always have in the past. I just looked at the processes that are running, via CTRL + ALT + DELETE, and 93 to 98 percent of resources are said there to be taken up by System Idle Process. Is that normal? When I go to System>System Tools>System Infor…
