Unable to create/format a partition
by Guest fuadkhandaker- 1 reply

Hey guys, I am having a weird problem with my new partition. I tried to partition my hard disk using Norton Partition magic. The process stopped all on a sudden with some error messages. Now after a reboot, I see a new unallocated space in my drive. I can't access it with anything, not even with the Partition Magic. I can't format or create a new partion off of it. I went to the XP disk management, when I right click it to create a new partition, the "New Partition" menu is grayed out. Can anyone please help me resolve this issue ?:(

XP hangs (on shutdown + elsewhere) if automatic updates are activa
by Guest David Llewellyn- 0 replies

After a repair from the SP2 CD, if automatic updates are activated, my French XP SP2 hangs frequently while doing many functions, and it looks like a conflict somewhere. The machine is virtually unuseable! The problems seem mostly random, but the following are systematic: 1. I cannot access the E:\ drive from Windows explorer (the system hangs), 2. the system hangs at shutdown (with no programs running, I click "démarrer"/"arreter"/"redémarrer", the system starts to shut down, displays the blue shutdown sceen with message "deconnexion", then the message "fermeture de Windows" appears and the system hangs. I then have to turn off the power. If I deactiv…

Windows Media Player 11 CD Playback
by Guest Phil Newman- 2 replies

Hi there, I've got a 2-year old Dell Dimenson 1100, which does everything I want. I recently went to play a CD on the dvd drive, and the playback is awful, with some kind of "popping" sound. I've uploaded an example here: http://cid-320da9eb83fa4634.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/CD%20Drive%20Example?uc=1 I've checked inside, the CD drive isn't on the same IDE slot as the harddrive. The CPU and VM size are normal during playback. Only during ripping does the CPU go crazy. mp3 playback is fine. no unwanted sounds there. So I guess it must be the dvd player, which is annoying, as I've rarely used it. DVD drives are relatively cheap these days, wil…

Remove Xp from dual boot with vista
by Guest REDWAGON- 5 replies
Have XP/SP2 installed on one Hard drive and Vista Home Premium (32bit) installed on another separate HD, in a dual boot situation. Would like to format and remove XP from the drive it is on and only have Vista as my OS. Using Computer Management (while booted in Vista) to try and format the drive that XP is installed on but get a screen that advises that the drive cannot be formatted. How can XP be formatted and that OS be removed so I can use that drive as just a slave drive and have the Vista HD and vista as my only OS ?? Both HD's are independant SATA drives (no RAID configuration) and both OS's are "retail" not OEM. Thank a bunch Redwagon.

Cookie, History & Temp Internet File Folders not found
by Guest bullnuc- 8 replies
Am running XP Home w/SP2 and all current OS updates installed. The cookie folder, supposedly should be in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\ cannot be seen. Likewise the Temp Internet File and History folders, supposedly should be in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\ cannot be seen. All settings in folder options and internet options have been checked and are correct according to my extensive search on this and other sites. I have even tweaked the registry in several areas to try and make them appear. All to no avail. I suspect a Malware or Spyware issue but my scanner (Trend Micro 2008 Internet Security Suite- fully installed) has not f…

how to move the Desktop
by Guest Tim.T- 1 reply
I've managed to move the Desktop folder, both manually and in the registry to the new location, "v:\Desktop". But whenever I choose to "save to desktop"when surfing the web (using Firefox), or choose the "Send to...Desktop" option when righclicking an item, I find it's always saved to the default "%USERPROFILE%/Desktop", not "v:\Desktop". This is despite the fact all the files and folders on the Desktop now refer to "v:\Desktop". I changed all the %USERPROFILE%/Desktop" settings in the registry that I could find, to "v:\Desktop" but for some reason Windows is still choosing the default destination for some procedures. What I'm I doing wrong? Cheers, Tim

deleting a file deletes corresponding directory!!!!
by Guest jameshanley39@yahoo.co.uk- 9 replies

create a directory called asdf_files create a file called asdf.htm like c:\blah\asdf_files c:\blah\asdf.htm i.e. the asdf.htm file not in the asdf_files directory. Now delete one!!!! And it deletes the other one!!!!! It doesn`t have to be asdf, it can be anything. And the file can be .htm or .html I know why windows does this.. Because when saving websites locally with internet explorer, that convention is used, and it wants to help users delete them should they choose to Is there any way to fix this? / Stop it from doing this?

Screen Resolution Question
by Guest Laughingstar~*- 6 replies
I am confused about how to adjust my screen resolution. When I change it, the desk top icons go ka-flooie! I use adaptive software (Dragon, ZoomText, Kurzweil, etc), and that may impact what I select, however, I've found going back to Windows Classic overall has been a great improvement. Now, I have a lower resolution, but the desktop icons are all over the place, except for the right-hand side of my monitor...a HP 1940. I have XP Pro, and use OE6 - all updates current. Thank you very much, and happy spring. -- "I'm not a complete idiot -- Some parts are missing (Maxine?)."

Yesterday when I started my computer. It would not load and went to the safe mode window. I tried safe mode and all the other option on that page and nothing works. The only way to turn off the computer is to shut it down. I tried to do a restore and the restore shut down. Now all I get is the following message: Windows could not start because of the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of above. Where can i download the following file I am using a different computer now. Thanks Loren
