Re: How do you make yahoo email the default emailer? If you want to add Yahoo mail to Internet Options so you can choose it to be your default email program without installing Yahoo Messenger do the following. Go to http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?ymmapi to download yammapi.dll and copy it to the following location. C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Common If these folders do not exist you will have to create them. Go to "programs", "accessories" and open "notepad". Then copy and paste the information below starting at "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" to notepad and save it as a .reg file, such as yahoo.reg Then double click on the .r…

endless cycle running chkdsk on bootup, how do I stop it?
by Guest Niteowl- 5 replies
hi, I discovered some issues with a few files on a secondary hard drive on my system, so decided to do a chkdsk, went into Administrative tools/disk management, and right clicked on the drives, (D: and F:) and chose to run chkdsk, it said it had to reboot and run on bootup, I said ok... now it is in an endless cycle of running on bootup... I've tried booting up to safe mode, and bootup normally, neither work.. the one for safe mode just stops after showing a bunch of stuff it is supposedly installing, and does nothing... booting up normally just continues the cycle. How do I stop it and get it to finish booting into windows? thanks, niteowl …

Hi, my preferences are set to notify and then I choose downloads. I've not recieved any notification for a long time. Can someone tell me when last critical update was? (am not concerned with office critical updates, will explain below.) Is there a newsletter which tells when critical updates are available. I did try to sign up for one, and was impossible, buggy i take it, didn't work..but if anyone knows of one, would love to know. It's impossible to find which newsletter or email notice informs of such..the whole world knows before i do when there's a critical update available.. and i cant find anyway to find out when. HP Pavilion 524w's hang ups/lock ups.
by Guest pavilion.524w@gmail.com- 1 reply
- 100 views
Will be much indebted if a good techie/soul could give me useful insights as to these endless hang ups/lock ups from my HP Pavilion 524w ... because I just can't function; PC is my CentCom. Believe or not, have been putting up with this crap for nearly three (3) months now. Argh! SYMPTOMS » The first sign of future hang ups --though these may still be hours ahead-- is that after each boot up, the mouse pointer is jerky the very first time one moves it. It jumps anywhere from 1/4" to 2" or so from its initial position (from wherever it landed after boot up) to whatever direction I'm pointing it to. Note it only does this one time initially at the …

Trying to use old monitor...doesn't work
by Guest rev_otis_mcnatt@yahoo.com- 3 replies

I know this may have a simple explanation, but it is unknown to me. My two-year-old (I think) monitor began to have some problem, and no longer works (sort of cheap I think...Insignia brand). Anyway, I thought I'd hook up an old circa 1993 monitor I have in storage to my two-year-old HP computer. It works fine while Windows is starting up, but when it gets to the main interface where the wallpaper, application icons etc., are, things gets really messy and totally unusable. I've gone into BIOS at the beginning to see if I could see any way to maybe sorta get a clue on how to make the old monitor work, but no mention of it as far as I can see. The plug from…

Access Denied on a directory
by Guest RDT- 1 reply

I have a cpu running XP pro with a second hard drive addressed as E:\. On this drive is a directory called "System Volume Information". I am signed in as administrator but when I try to access this folder it says "System volume information is not accessable, access denied". I don't know if this is related, but my antivirus software recently reported a virus in C:\system volume information but I could not find that file. I have "show hidden files" checked and "hide system files" unchecked. What does all this mean? Thanks

issue with Internet access - PCI driver ? please help
by Guest Ch33zst34k- 1 reply

Hey all - some type of event took place with my pc last evening which caused two major issues - first off, my mobo/network card does not see the internet connection (I have tested the internet line in on another computer and the signal is valid) and the device manager shows the PCI device with the old exclamation point (ie - not working). The second less urgent thing happening is an extremely slow boot cycle (it now takes about 10 mins to boot fully). I have reinstalled the chipset driver with no success - any thoughts ?

An observation re Notepad
by Guest Jack B- 17 replies

An observation re Notepad: If you save anything creating text with Notepad set on "Wrap text," Notepad will inject paragraph marks at the end of each line where it's wrapped. If you don't want that to happen, you must turn off "Wrap text," which is sort of impractical. Anyway, that's irritating. I have, however, found a way to save a .txt file without those line-by-line paragraph marks: use MS Word and save as text. Jack

Mystery Alert

I get the following message window pop up at approximately hourly intervals: An application named NT Kernel & System (file name ntoskrnl.exe) has been blocked from accessing the network. There is a "Do not show this window again" box, and even though I place a check mark into the box, the window keeps popping up. My question is this: Is the Kernel & System thing something that needs to access the network? Can it be hunted down and deleted? What is blocking it (I run a Sygate Firewall and McAfee Security center) ? Any help would be appreciated. TIA, Hagen Sahm

by Guest cateyedude- 7 replies

I just rebuilt this PC and loaded 'Windows XP Pro upgrade' using my old Windows 98 disk as the qualifying product for upgrade. After I finished all updates (close to 100 now), loaded Windows Live OneCare on as my antivirus, and installed a HP Photosmart 8150 printer, I noticed a new key in the registry. The path is as follows: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\] It contains 3 subkeys: IMAIL, MAPI and MSFS. All have values of "Installed=1" and MAPI has the additional value "NoChange=1" Since this Key appeared only after updating to the Microsoft website, or installing a Microsoft product, I cannot he…

Installed a AirLink 101 "N" wireless pci adapter, but the home page to set up freezes up and will not continue. The driver is installed, and shows up properly in device manager. -AND- The desktop's "Wireless Network Connection Properties" window is missing the tab called "Wireless Networks". There are only 2 tabs in this window: General and Advanced. How do I fix this? Scot65

Network Places issues
by Guest Dick Watson- 1 reply

I have two issues on my XP Pro SP2 desktop that I'm having a hard time resolving. In both these cases, my XP Pro SP2 laptop is working as expected. 1) Every place is shown as "The Internet" or "Unspecified" even though most of the "Internet" links are really shares on the local network. Why? How does it decide what is "Local" and what is "Internet"? I've rerun the "setup a home or office network" wizard and no change. 2) UPnP devices are not showing up at all. I've run hide/show icons for networked UPnP devices and confirmed both the discovery and UPnP services are running. I've googled and found lots about icons in the system tray...
