Windows XP "access is denied" error for folder shortcuts - $10 to theperson who solves it Hi, I'm a pretty technical user, and have been living with this issue for 3 years now. It's not worth reinstalling Windows over, but it's annoying all the same. I'm willing to Paypal $10 to the person who can solve this for me. I don't have any way to prove that I'll pay you, but what have you got to lose? The problem: I receive a standard Windows error message box "Access denied" when I double click a shortcut to a folder, or when I go to Start | Run and type in a folder other than the drive root. These problems happen for ANY folder on ANY drive. For example…

by Guest davo77- 0 replies

Im running XP Home, and had a problem with the screen saver not coming on after the time out period...note SP2. I found a response on XP general concerning DVD drivers loading up at startup causing a problem (cyberlink Power DVD). Indeed removing the driver from startup via MSconfig fixed the issue... hurray. I loaded the SP3 update, no probem the screen saver still was working. Today... auto update loaded some fixes regarding MS Ooffice sp3, now the screen saver is back to non operation status (except in preview mode). I checked the DVD driver it is still unloaded. Anyone have any clues on how this latest update put the monkey whench back in …

Computer runs windows XP Home edition with SP3. AVG Free Anti virus, no 3rd party firewall, just built in windows one. My friend has a DSL connection. For some reason the connection is fine for 15 minutes but after that I loose the connection because everytime I change websites or refresh the current page i get a message that the page has timed out. The connection still shows as being connected on the task bar but wont let me connect to the internet. I have tried using Internet explorer and Firefox but still have the same problem with both. Have tried running Spybot and adaware, there were a few problems so cleared them, restarted but still had t…

by Guest David Lorenz- 2 replies

Hello Newsgroup, I recently worked on a WinXP SP2 PC which had a nice feature enabled. Let's assume I open the Windows Explorer and navigate by mouse to the folder: C:\temp\test Now I press [WIN]+R type "cmd" [ENTER] The commandline opens AND the prompt looks like that: C:\temp\test> (If theres no Windows Explorer open the prompt points to: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop) No matter what folder I open in Explorer, the command prompt alwalys points to the folder which was last focused in Explorer. Note: - I already know the solution to add a entry to the context menu in explorer but that's not what I want. - There is …

USB Not Working
by Guest Neil- 11 replies

Does anyone have any advice on how to get USB ports working in XP Home SP2? The machineis a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop, the owner (not me) has re-installed windows, but now the USB ports won't work. They show up a functioning etc in the Device Manager, and there are no newer drivers according to MS. I think the ports are physically working, as a USB pendrive lights up when inserted, but Windows doesn't recognise it's there. I have re-installed the chipset drivers for the motherboard just in case, but no joy, so I'm sure it must be a Windows thing, I just dont know how to fix it! TIA Neil

Font overflowing dialog boxes
by Guest Dan- 1 reply

My system is running Win XP Pro, Service Pack 2. In some programs with certain dialog boxes or windows in those programs, the text is larger than it should be and either overflows the right edge of the window or wraps abnormally or runs into another control. Sometimes it pushes the OK or Cancel buttons off the bottom of the window. The font is Arial or some equivalent, not something exotic. It doesn't happen in programs like Word or Excel, but one of the programs that this happens to is called Search and Replace by Funduc Software. A year or two ago everything worked fine. I have no idea what changed to make this happen. Does anyone have any ideas? Than…

Video card not active
by Guest Martin Murray- 1 reply

I have 2 video cards in my system. One is an AGP card (ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 8500) and the other is a PCI card (ATI Radeon 9100). Some time back I disabled the PCI card somehow, I forget how exactly. It is not disabled in Device Manager, but the system does not seem to see the card in the Control Panel Display applet. Now the situation is this: I want to use only the PCI card and not the AGP card at all. I disabled the AGP card in Device Manager. I changed the BIOS to startup the PCI card before the AGP card, but the system still does not really see it. In Device Manager, it is not even showing that I have a monitor installed. If I try to Add …

Windows Update after Reinstall of XP
by Guest marina- 13 replies

I plan on doing a reformat and reinstall of Windows XP upgrade. (The machine is badly infected.) In other forums and sites I've read to do download the Windows Updates & Fixes before anything else, but that you can also be attacked before you can get them downloaded and to do them through a networked machine. I don't have that option open to me. Another option mentioned was to download them to a CD and reload before connecting to the internet. Looking at the Microsoft update site there are so many updates I wouldn't know where to begin. I don't want to be infected again but I just don't know what steps to take to protect myself while doing the upd…

I have various folders in my Windows XP windows folder that I would like to delete as they seem to be just taking up space. But I am not sure what they are for and if they are necessary. Files such as: KB933360.log, KB935840.log etc Folders such as: NS9-KB932557_ENU, RS9-KB932557.ENU, SQL9_KB932557_ENU These folders all have folders such as: 1028,1030,1033,1040 etc. Can I just delete these? Thanks, Tom
