Installing XP onto a 64 Bit Turion machine
by Guest Paul_M- 1 reply

I've just bought a new ACER Travelmate 5520 that shipped with Vista Home. Unfortunately, I now can't run my older versions of Photoshop, Nero etc. Being a Scotsman, I'm loathe to spend out on new applications when my old ones do everything that I want them to. Question is, can I run my old 32 bit version of XP pro on this machine and should I have the syetem configured to dual boot or just wipe vista off and install XP? Any advice please! Windows starts but cannot get to login screen
by Guest Duane- 6 replies

I am working on my daughter's computer. Problem, I told here to let the internal battery drain down (to keep the lithium battery from getting a memory issue). Now when the computer boots (form Last know good configuration or Start in Normal mode)...it gets to the point where Windows will start -- It says Micorsoft Windows XP -- has the flag -- and the progress bar with the scrolling blue bars goes for about 30 seconds and then it just hangs. I cannot get to the login point. When I try starting it in other modes (like in safe mode, I get lots of things like: multi(0)disk(0)rddisck(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\compbatt.sys BATTC.sys inteli…

Weird Problem After Installing WinXP Fax Services
by Guest Rich- 5 replies

I am ot sure if this is the correct group to post to. I have a strange problem with XP Fax Services. I am using a Dell XPS410 with XP MCE SP2 with all security and Hot Fixes up to date. I can successfully install Fax Services, configure and use it. I can send Faxes with no problems. I can send Faxes from MS Word. However, after re-booting the computer for the first time after the install certain Processes will hang for several minutes before functioning. Things like IE 6 and Add/Remove Windows Components will just sit there doing nothing. Process Explorer shows no activity except for System Idle Process. When what ever is hanging is finished you see chan…

Mouse Problem
by Guest Tony P.- 2 replies

Hello, I have a Dell 8600 laptop running WinXP SP2. Last week I needed to run a system restore and ever since then, I've had a problem with the mouse. Everything seems to be ok now but for some reason, the mouse doesn't get recognized when the PC gets booted up. In fact, it doesn't even light up. The mouse is a Microsoft USB optical. The touch pad still works ok. After bootup, if I unplug the mouse and then plug it back in, it will light up and begin to work normally. Or, if I boot up a 2nd time, the mouse then works ok. Is there something I can do to fix this problem? -- Thanks, Tony

Hi, i have set up 4 machines on a simple network and each of them read the others just fine. On machine #1 I have an Access database file. I want to open/edit that file from machine #2. I am able to see the file just fine from machine #2. However, it won't let me open the file as I get an error that says, "Could not find the file c:\document and settings\user\documents\myfile.mdb. I don't understand how to get this file open on to machine #2 as I can see it right there in the network (in my Explorer). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

.NET framework
by Guest six-h- 3 replies

I keep posting the same question and on one answers, why? Again. I used to have .Net 3, and when I installed it, the background grey shades in Word, Photoshop, Internet explorer and other programmes, changed to a more pleasing variety of sepia shades. Has anyone else noticed this??? After a re-install, I've now got .NET 3.5, and the sepia shades have gone. I'd like them back, is this possible?? some one must know the answer!

Activate WinXP-Home - Help!

I have a bit of a dilemma... My DELL Inspiron 1000 has crapped out on me for the umpteenth time (okay, I exaggerate... but it *is* the 3rd time), so it's "in the shop." My brother was kind enough to lend me his Inspiron 8600 (for which I hold out no high hopes... but I need a computer and have limited funds). Using his computer has involved upgrading to a new HDD and thus a reinstall of WinXP Home. Problem is, my brother couldn't find his XP install CD. So, I've used the one that came with my I-1000. All seemed well until I tried activating XP and input the code that was on the bottom of my brother's I-8600. As I'm sure you've guessed, it didn't …

dueal boot - blue and white screen
by Guest aa- 23 replies

On ASUS notebook with Windows XP Home attempted to make it dual boot to install W2K. Before dong any changes I copied original ntldr (245K) and ntdetect.com(47K). With Partition Magic created an NTFS primary partition and installed W2K Pro which went smoothly, and W2K was running OK XP Home would not start at all because, as I seem to remember, ntldr(211K) and ntdetect.com(34K) generated by W2K would not load XP, -so I replaced them with the those of XP Home I copied earlier. Now after selecting XPHome it produces the screen suggesting several modes of loading XP Home, but whatever mode I select it just restarts the computer. I replaced ntldr and ntdetect.c…

Can anyone tell me if XP's Back-Up program is efficient? I have seen where people have "thought" they had a back-up and something was wrong with it. Also, Can this back-up program be accomplished to an external NTFS drive rather than the A drive that I recall? Thank you in advance and if anyone has any special pointers I would be grateful.
