Folder Stuck on Temp Window.
by Guest Uncle Jaque in Maine- 6 replies

A while ago I tried to back up my Windows registry, as it seemed like a pretty good idea at the moment. Silly Me!! *{B^{P~ It was over 3 gigs, and there is NO WAY in Chicago that it was going to fit on my pathetic CD! So I tried to correct my boneheaded error by deleting the "Windows" folder (it actually looks more like a "link") from the "ready to be written" window. After about 10 seconds of deleting, my Compaq Presario goes "GOINK!!!" and says that it cannot delete the folder because "Access Denied" to a font file that happens to be in it. Every time I insert a CD into the drive, the "CD Writing Wizzard" pops up and wants to write the bloomin' 3 …

Administrator/All Users Profile
by Guest Delores- 1 reply

If I set up a computer under the administrator profile -- changing things as display settings, power option and printers, etc. - is there a way to copy ALL of these settings to the All Users profile? I want to set it up in such a way that anyone who logs onto that computer will have those settings. I don't want to use roaming profiles because we've had too much trouble with that in the past. Thank you

Multiple Monitors
by Guest dawnm.jordan@gmail.com- 12 replies

Hi Everyone, I am trying to configure 3 monitors on my workstation using a dualhead nVidia dvi card, and a 'Y' splitter (dvi/vga). What's happening seems a little strange, when I boot the system montiors A & C are both active, and show all the POST and BIOS info and continue until Windows XP begins to load, once Windows starts monitor A becomes inactive, and the display moves to monitors B & C. Once in Windows, monitor A is not detected. I guess I should add that monitor A is using the vga connector and B & C are both using DVI. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Dawn

'installing upgrades' when offline
by Guest wally- 4 replies
I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista on it. It doesn't get much use and is rarely connected to the internet and I usually have the wireless connection switch set to off. However I have noticed that even when I am off line it 'installs upgrades', last night taking a good fifteen minutes to install nine upgrades before it closed down. If it's not connected, where are these upgrades coming from? Is there anything sinister going on?

When trying to explore start menu folders I have always been able to scroll the cursor over the start menu folder and click explore or explore all users. This has recently stopped functioning. I now have to manually go to the windows explorer instead of using the short cut method on the start menu. A picture that may illustrate this problem better is posted on alt.binaries.test , titled "Start menu problem\pic" 3-21-08

Resolution Automatically Resets to Lowest Setting after Windows Up
by Guest Redick79- 2 replies
Here’s my problem: Several nights ago my girlfriend was running Windows Update on her computer. Not only did she download the critical updates, she also clicked several other hardware updates as well. She downloaded the Windows Internet Explorer 7 for XP, Hewlett-Packard VP17 LCD Monitor driver, & NVIDIA Vanta/Vanta LT driver. After installing these updates the computer automatically shut down for the evening. When I turned on the computer the next day I had two new problems. First, the resolution was completely jacked up. The appropriate settings for this monitor are 1280 x 1024, 60 Hz. The computer now automatically adjusts back to 640 x 480 resoluti…

Folder OLK195
by Guest Mark Christensen- 10 replies

Whenever I get a photo emailed to me that I open in Photoshop and then do Save as, the folder I'm defaulted to is C:\Doc & Settings\myusername\local settings\temp internet files\OLK195 and everytime Photoshop crashes. There's files listed in this folder and I think one or more of them is corrupt which causes the crash. I've tried to find this folder in Windows Explorer but I can only get as far as the temp internet files folder and then Explorer crashes. There are no subfolders listed under temp internet files. I have Explorer set to display hidden files and folders. My question is how can I find this OLK195 folder and delete the files in it? I've t…

Save As - Slow response
by Guest Jim Bunton- 0 replies

XP Media Centre edition. Running two hard discs In Ms applications such as word, Excel when using 'Save As' the combo' Save in' is slow to respond. This is an inconvenience. Lately my Corel Draw (v 9 ) has developed more than an inconvenience. Save as causes total freeze up if the combo 'Save in' is used [if the directory is left the same it saves fine]. Tried reinstalling Corel - worked fine but has now gone back to freezing up if 'Save In' is clicked. -- Jim Bunton

Anyone got any ideas how to troubleshoot a STOP 0x1000007e code
by Guest Carol Haynes- 2 replies

I am getting daily (sometimes 2 or 3 times daily) random reboots on my system and it is getting really frustrating. I used DUMPCHK.EXE to expand the minidump file produced but can't work out how to stop the problem. I have reproduced the output below. The things I have tried so far are: * Looked up the STOP code on MSKB and there are two entries both related to resuming from hibernation. I do not use hibernation so that can't be the problem. * The output below suggests that the sound system may be involved in the problem as KMIXER, DRMKAUD, SPLITTER and DMUSIC are all part of the MS Kernel for the audio system. I have uninstalled all my audio drive…

Can rename, but not delete, file
by Guest Tim Zych- 7 replies
I can rename a file, but when I try to delete it, I get an "access denied" error. It's not being used by anybody. How can this happen? This is a DLL file as part of a .Net solution which is regularly updated. It's on a shared server that I access with Remote Desktop if that matters, but I've looked at the task manager and no one is using it. To reinstall the .Net solution, I can rename it, uninstall the solution and reinstall the latest version, but that renamed DLL is still in there. How can I delete it? I can see the Sharing and Security is full control for everybody for this directory, but it still won't delete. -- Tim Zych SF, CA

Windows XP repair followed by restore
by Guest JDGuymon- 16 replies
My system crashed and I had to do a system repair from the original operating system CD. After that, my installed programs are not recognized. Is there any way to follow this with a restore? I know the restore files still exist because I can see them in the C:\System Volume Information folder. There are two sets of files, one from the original installation and one from the new repair. If I try to restore now, it only "sees" the files in the newly repaired installation. How do I point the system to the original restore files so I can access them? Is there a change that can be made in the registry? Is there another way to complete the restore? Thanks.
