IBM T30 suddenly won't resume from Hibernate
by Guest jon.p.weaver@alcatel.co.uk- 3 replies

I never really truest hibernate after playing with it in the early days and finding it hopelessly unstable. But i recently bought a cheap IBM T30 laptop just for Internet Browsing and figured that I would try Hibernate. To my surprise it worked and continued to give me faultess performance and worked 100s of times in a row with no problems. One day, i suddenlty started getting intermittent problems when resuming from a Hibernate.. It would either load the hibernate file and give me a BSOD, or I would simply get an 'Resume cannot be loaded' at the start... Trying to track the problem back I ran ever kind for Malware/Virus software I could find and removed …

Classic search not possible because a prompt wants password of archive?
by Guest Martin Caldwell- 0 replies
I started a classic search (Start->search) over my whole hard disc for a certain file. However the search cannot be completed because after some seconds of running I dialog prompt appears telling me: "The backup archive you have chosen is password protected. To access the backup archive you must enter the password." It seems to me that there is somewhere an password protected archive on my hard disc into which classic search wants to look. I cannot skip this archive. So the whole search process cannot be completed. I cannot remember where this protected archive is. How can I find out the location? Alternatively how can I skip this archive from be…

Can't extend desktop.
by Guest Tom- 1 reply

Recently I just finished a build with XP Pro. The graphics card is the XFX Nvidia 8600GTS with 512MB memory and 2 x DVI outputs. However, I can't extend my desktop to the second monitor. I have two monitors plugged in yet windows is only detecting the one output. On my laptop it shows 2 black squares with 1 and 2 representing the two monitors, here I only have a picture showing a monitor with the desktop blue background. Why is it not finding the other output? The drivers are the latest ones from the Nvidia website? Thanks!

Asked to Restart EVERY Time I Start
by Guest Matthew Mailey- 1 reply

The machine is a Dell Dimension 3000 Running XP Pro Genuine product - fully updated Norton AV 2006 Common "everybody can use" office resource machine. Every time the system is Started/Restarted, a little gray box pops up after the desktop loads saying "The computer must be restarted before updating can continue." There isn't anything "extra" running at startup (removed all but essentials using msconfig - and I know what should/should not be pulled); The system has tested free of spyware and viruses; there aren't any errors or warnings that can point the way in the event logs; and the system will work normally if 'No' is clicked to get out of the gray…

'Normal Select' cursor defaulting to white XP default
by Guest C0²- 1 reply
Hi I have installed a great program call Flyakite OSX. It has modified my system to look a lot like a mac.It included a cursor theme, and the default cursor is a little black one. My problem is that after a few seconds of using the cursor, it changes to the Microsoft default one. The only way to fix this is to go to Control Panel -> Mouse -> Cursors and re-select the cursor theme. This happens with any other cursor theme I use. This cursor theme works fine on my other PC and on various other friends' PCs.

by Guest Temarias- 2 replies

Hi. I have a Windows XP machine that was upgraded from Windows 2000. When the machine was Win2K, %systemroot% was equal to C:\winnt. When I upgraded to Windows XP, the %systemroot% value remained the same. Is there any way I can change the value of the %systemroot% to C:\windows without having to do a clean install. My first attempt to change the %systemroot% value... I placed a harddrive I wanted to change from C:\winnt to C:\windows into another machine as a secondary drive. I was able to change the winnt folder to windows and the boot.ini to look for Windows XP on C:\windows. However, when I put the drive back in its original chassis as the master …

i'm having problems with my computer since installing a new copy of windows XP home edition. basically the option to activate windows is not there- when i turn on the computer it notifies me that i have 30 days to activate windows, but when i click on the icon in the system tray it just disappears, and nothing happens. also when trying to run "c:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a" windows cannot find it. nor is the option available in 'system tools'. also to make things even more interesting i cannot connect to the internet whatsoever. i've tried setting up various dial-ups (as a last resort) but it just states there is unsufficient memory at the end of…

scrolling problems in Internet Explorer
by Guest mkarmali- 4 replies

I have a Java applet that uses the drawString method (of the Graphics class) to "draw" rectangles and other shapes when called in my paint method. I also embed the same applet in an html page to be run in Internet Explorer( my html uses the "APPLET CODE" tag and provides the class file name). Now, on my desktop when I "run" the applet by opening the html page in IE, it works fine -- by which I mean that using IE's vertical scroll bar the page scrolls correctly and shows me the part of my graphics that was hidden at the bottom. It continues to display my applet. However, on my laptop it doesn't work. As soon as I scroll, the "painted" stuff just disappear…

I've tried Kill Box without success, I've booted into Safe Mode and tried to delete it but the damned thing still stays there. Is there any way I can rid my pc of this file?
