A friend of mine has a desktop running XP Pro SP3. He also had office 2000 installed until recently. Anyway he had to unistall Office due to some problem or other but since then he has the following faults: 1. He can connect to the internet but after about 5 mins it just times out everytime he tries to go to any website. 2. His pointer constantly has the small hourglass showing as soon as he starts his computer, as if the computer is trying to do something. I checked in task manager but there are no programs running. I had a look earlier but ran out of ideas. He tried using system restore to roll back to efore he uninstalled office but still the s…

Missing Bluetooth Support
by Guest Lunaray- 2 replies

I'm running XP Home edition w/SP2 and according to what I've read, I should have a Bluetooth icon in my Control Panel, nor do I have any native Windows drivers installed for Bluetooth, absolutely nothing on my computer related to Bluetooth. I found an article on Microsoft's website that tells me how to add a Bluetooth entry in the registry, if you're missing the icon in the Control Panel, but it didn't work! (article #911894). How can I add the missing Bluetooth support to my computer? Thanks, Ray

Integer Problem?
by Guest rdarne- 5 replies

I have a strange problem with numbers on a computer in my office. It appears as though integer values are not recognized. For instance, Access has a version number of 18.4. On this computer, it shows as 18.45649382 (not exactly, but a long decimal number). In an Access form that counts records, all numbers have a long decimal after them. This also occurs in a webstore form that a user can enter a price for a product. When you try to enter 110 or 110.00, it tells you that it must be an integer. If you add many decimal points (110.003344566) it will recognize and accept this number. I think this may also affect MS Outlook, which has this header atop ever…

Does windows XP update ever reboot automatically?
by Guest Stan Hilliard- 1 reply

XP Yesterday: I use windows XP automatic updating. I shutdown the PC overnight. Often the update is applied when I shut down the PC. But yesterday I clicked a button on the usual messagebox that instructed it to shutdown without updating. XP Today: I started the PC and started Fprot anti virus manually, which takes about 1/2 hour on my PC. When I later returned to the PC the screen was at the windows logon screen. The system had logged me off. During login, I got a balloon message that windows had done an automatic update & had restarted the computer. I have never seen it update automatically aromatically before. Is this normal or might something els…

Windows Firewall Settings will not dosplay
by Guest Not Me- 4 replies

When I try to access the Windows Firewall, I get an error...due to an unspecified error, windows firewall settings can not be displayed. I have not installed any third party firewall and Defender, Spybot and AVG8 tell me the machine is clean of spyware. XP Home SP2 Any idea how I can re-enable the firewall? Norton Secutiry (2005) came on the machine OEM, but was uninstalled long ago. I ran the Norton cleanup tool today to be sure it was no longer a problem.

Find the authors of files
by Guest kcrad- 1 reply

Does anyone know of a tool that will extract the author information from a list of files? I have thousands of old files on a shared server from many authors that have accumulated over the years and I need to sort them out. One thing that would really help me is if I could sort them according to who wrote them, or what machine they were created on. Is there a way to do that without opening the properties of each file individally? Thanks!

SP3 - Status Question 1 2
by Guest Fred S *****- 26 replies

I have advised a number of people to hold off on installing SP3 for obvious reasons. One has actually encountered problems as he had automatic updates on and SP3 was installed. I had him use Add/Remove Progs to remove SP3 and he seems to be OK. My question is this, what is going on with SP3 remedies? Is MS working on a new version of SP3, or is there a "fix" for it that can be installed ASAP? I guess that there needs to be a "Status" report of some kind to keep users up to date on what is going on. Any comments? Thanks, Fred

Need minidump analyzed
by Guest Gary Roach- 4 replies

I've got a computer with a crash problem that happens occasionally (approx. once a week). The minidump analysis is below. It seems to indicate a problem with the parallel port. Since this is not being used I disabled it in Windows. I want to know if there's any further action required. I'm waiting to see if the crash reoccurs. Thanks for any help.
