Hi. This is a long post, and I appreciate your patience. I am having a problem with the installation of printer software. I describe the problem below. --- I have a Gateway computer with the following: 1) a 1400-MHz Pentium 4 processor, 2) 256 MB of RAM, and 3) 40 GB of hard-drive space. The computer is running Windows Millennium Edition (ME). I've had this computer for years, and I never bought a printer for it until now. I bought a Brother MFC-240C printer. This is a multifunction device: printer, copier, fax, and scanner. --- The installation guide instructed me to do the following: 1) Install the paper. 2) Connect the printer to the phone …

'Phantom' Office install process for new user
by Guest Steve H- 4 replies

On setting up a third user on our XPHome laptop, an unnecessary 'please wait while Windows installs...' message cycle begins whenever an Office programme is clicked. The process looks for the msi file on a network that does not exist, but is not necessary in any case because if one simply cancels the installer as soon as the pop up appears, the programmes load just fine. There are quite a lot of references to similar messages found in searching, but they seem to refer to fixes that don't apply in our case. Many refer to downloading an 'Orctools.exe' file, which does not seem to be at the links given; changing a registry value, that does not exist in our…

Hi All, Recently had an XP crash due to a bad Norton Ghost download. Have re-installed a fresh copy of winxp on the same drive but trying to re-install some of my other programs (notable adobe) the setup files keep trying to load into my old user account e.g. C:\Documents and settings\wronguseraccount\local settings\application data etc I've removed all previous traces from the registry but realise there may be some hidden files. Anyone with ideas? Thanks, Pete

Gurus, Have a question concerning sysprep.inf. In this file I have a [GuiRunOnce] section with a single line under it: C:\i386\$oem$\Reg_change.vbs. The file Reg_change.vbs is not being executed. It changes one line in the registry but that winds up not happening at all. Inside the Sysprep folder I have an i386 folder and under that I have a $oem$ folder containing Reg_change.vbs. What am I doing wrong? All other features of Sysprep are working properly. -- Spin

what could the possible reasons be with a ps2 optical mouse suddenly not working correctly. It will work then all of a sudden start to jump around or not respond. I've tried a few mice resulting in the same problem. Changed the surface that the mouse hovers over with no luck either.

windows pro

In the past, if I had a windows problem that I could not figure out, I would put in the windows disk and go over the top of the OS with a new install (without formatting) and it always seemed to fix my problem. I tried this today to fix a registry problem and I am getting the following warning I have not seen before: Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD. Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be recovered. This is a purchased copy of Win XP Pro with a key. Is this because I have in…

Problem deleting files
by Guest PeteOlcott- 0 replies

I needed to delete about 2.7 GB of 500,000 files yesterday and it seemed that it was taking far too long. I was deleting these files using the command prompt. I opened another command prompt to measure the progress by seeing how much free space became available every minute. It was only about 2 MB, thus the system was only deleting about 370 files per minute. At this rate it would take more than 22 hours to complete. I ended up reformatting the drive because this would take only 25 minutes. Does anyone have any idea whether or not deleting 500,000 files of an average of 5 KB each should take more than 22 hours on a fast quad- core sata drive machine? What cou…

by Guest Mark Broom- 0 replies

Hello all. I have about 6-8 workstations that will not shut down or log off. This was an isolated event and I had 1 workstation that was doing it for a while now it seems to be spreading. Network is virus and adware free and so are the workstations. Was there some sort of update that would have caused this problem?? I don't or cannot understand why it would start with 1 system then over the past 3-4 days I now have 8 that will not shut down or log off using the windows shut down screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Mark
