Redirecting special folders for multiple users to one location.
by Guest Indicium- 1 reply

Windows XP sets up special folders (including the favourites folder) for each user in their area on the home computer. You can redirect them using Tweak UI. However, Tweak UI gives the following warning: "Carelessly changing your special folders may make your system unusable. For example, don't set two special folders equal to each other, or set a special folder equal to a system folder like the Fonts folder. Continue changing special folders?" I already read "How to redirect special folders in Windows XP?" (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/RedirectFolders.htm), but this article does not give an answer to the above mentioned warning. I've been trying to follow this technology over the years, they haven't put out anything lately. Really nice to see that the have finally released what looks like a consumer/prosumer version of their software. The control panels need serious design help, but I have to say that I am very impressed with the range of controls that are present. This is really worth checking out.http://dvnphoto.com/ downloads

Windows XP Pro COA but No disk
by Guest Rob Rich- 11 replies
Hi, I have a COA attached to my gateway PC but no recovery disk. I have contacted Gateway (MPC) and was told that they cannot help me because I am not the original owner of the computer and its now out of warranty. I'm not asking for support with this pc, I just want the recovery disks for Windows XP. I'm even willing to purchase them. Are they responsible for providing support for Windows XP that they installed on one of their PC's? Just because its out of warranty, shouldn't negate the fact that they provided the PC with windows XP. On the OEM System Buidlers version, it specifically states that the builder of the pc is responsible for provid…

Hi All, I got a new I-Pod and down loaded there software, (I-tunes), to put music on the I-pod. Ever since I did that when I open some programs a window pops up saying "Smart Sound Quick Tracks Plugin" and starts to load but stops and another window pops up saying "The Feature you are trying to use is on a network that is unavailable" This only happens on about 5 of my programs, not on all of them. Please let me know how to go about stopping this program. Thank you. George - NY

I am having a problem with my computer turning itself on overnight. I have tried disabling MS update, but it did not fix it. I read a note in the MS news link that stated to check the BIOS for LAN-on setting. I cant find the BIOS anywhere, even with a serch. I have a Windows XP operating system but I just bought this computer a few weeks ago (used) and I am not sure what may be in it? Any ideas?

Transfer OEM Windows to a New PC
by Guest Daddy- 10 replies
I'd like to buy a new computer (to get up-to-date hardware) and transfer my current software to the new computer, in effect replacing the contents of the new computer's hard disk with the contents of my current hard disk. Yes, I know there will be driver issues and I'm prepared to deal with them. What I have is a legal question: I understand that my OEM copy of Windows XP is not allowed to be transferred to a second computer, even if I am the owner of that second computer. (Correct?) What would I have to do to make Windows 'legal' on the new computer. I suppose I could run out to the store and buy a copy of Windows XP to use its license key - but is there a better (…

I've recently bought a laptop which came with WinXP Pro. I don't want WinXP Pro on it, but I'd like it on a desktop I'll be building in the next few weeks. Legally, am I allowed to uninstall it from the laptop and reinstall it onto the desktop? I know it's technically possible.

Windows explorer variable icon
by Guest simonc- 4 replies
When you click on a folder in the Folder Pane in Windows Explorer the icon changes from a closed folder to an open folder. Trying to be clever I used the Folder Properties Customize Change Icon option to put a different icon on a folder I was using a lot so that it would stand out. Now I no longer need to highlight that folder I changed the icon back to the default, but it no longer animates to show the open folder when I click on it. Is there a way to reset this? Grateful for advice.

How can I set to DOS Windows Mode ( same as I goto command prompt )? Thank you very much! Have a nice holiday!

WHY "missing or corrupt hal.dll" ?
by Guest Rajesh- 1 reply
Hi I am just wondering that why does the partition get corrupted suddenly. In past couple of months I have come across following errors missing or corrupt hal.dll missing or corrupt c:\windows\system32\drivers\config missing or corrupt c:\windows\system32\ntfs.sys And this happens only in field, I have tried to do multiple abnormal shutdowns. Tried switching off the Write Cache option on the hard disk. When doing the testing in lab (by putting the PC on raw power) it is very difficult to recreate this problem. But in field it appears a very recurring problem. Can any one suggest what are the reasons for the corrupt file system? What else could ca…

Quirks in Scandisk, Chkdsk, Fixmbr, Fixboot 1 2
by Guest Franc Zabkar- 34 replies

I recently had to repair file system corruption for two XP users, one with a FAT32 partition, the other with NTFS. Unfortunately I have little experience with XP so I struggled quite a bit. Anyway I discovered that Microsoft's disc repair tools were flawed in several ways. Case #1 ------- The PC with the NTFS partition had an inaccessible registry file, c:\windows\system32\config\system. It couldn't be deleted, copied, or renamed, so the procedure in this MSKB article could not be applied: How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 I attempted to run CHKDSK from the repair c…

Search for files/folders
by Guest Ted- 5 replies
I have a curious issue using Windows XP Home Search: when I search for files with .psa as the extent (a Photoshop Elements file), the search will not find the file in its "home" location (i.e., where Photoshop Elements stores it). That location is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Catalogs. The search does find other .psa files stored in other locations and a copy of the same file on my external hard drive. To my knowledge I do not have any options set to hide certain files or file types. Why would this be? Thanks.

Re: Windows forgot what .lnk and .exe are? I downloaded this zip file, and regedit is disabled by administrator. I have tried enabling regedit via Start>Run>HKEY...etc This does not work! I can't run any programs by clicking it, only by right click>run as>uncheck the option> and press ok. If anyone has a better solution or knows how to fix this problem, please reply A.S.A.P.!
