ANN: Kelly's website
by Guest PA Bear [MS MVP]- 23 replies

Most of us are familiar with the contributions made by MVP Kelly Theriot to this newsgroup over the years, and most of us use her website and hosted files on a regular basis. Unfortunately, Kelly's website (kellys-korner-xp.com) and associated pages have been "lost" (temporarily, we hope) and are now being hosted by another, fairly suspect owner. Do NOT use or cite any of Kelly's pages or links for the time being! Do NOT click on any links on the current kellys-korner-xp.com page! Do NOT click on any links in a pop-up you may get at the current kellys-korner-xp.com page! [1] Also see http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.security.homeu…

Error checking/scandisc problem
by Guest dedan- 0 replies
When I recently tried to run the error checking function from My Computer. I set it to "Automatically fix system errors" and "Scan and attempt recovery of bad sectors" and then rebooted the PC as per usual. Then after restarting it reached the blue screen where it normally goes though the error checking and repair process and the message "Cannot open volume C direct access" appeared. It then continued without completing the error checking and repair process. A few days before this I installed Zone Alarm firewall and think this could be causing the problem so I uninstalled zone alarm but the problem still persisted. Defragmentation and everything else in runnin…

How do I find out when user XXX logged in+out on last Tuesday? Event log entry possible?

How do I find out when user XXX logged in+out on last Tuesday? Event log entry possible? Is there a way to find out when user XXX logged in and out from WinXP on e.g. last Tuesday ? I could imagine that there is an event log entry written. However I do not see it. Do I have to enable "User logon/logoff event log records" somewhere ? If these kind of events are not logged: Is there another way (work around) to write (automatically) event log records (in the future) when users log off? How can I (as normal user) write easily log records into the system log (e.g. from command line)? Martin

Notification Area
by Guest PeeDee- 4 replies
I've just discovered that I cannot cutomize my WXP Task Bar 'Notification Area' . In the properties section, after setting 'Hide Inactive Icons', and going in through the 'Customize' button, the pull-down menu for each task bar item is not active and cannot be changed. I am wondering if this program is not working, or if there is another setting elsewhere that I must uncheck in order to get this particulr feature to work. Thanks

How big can HOSTS be?
by Guest Nil- 22 replies
Will there be a performance hit if the HOSTS file passes a certain size or number of entries? I use Spybot Search & Destroy's Immunize feature, which maps bad-guy sites and domains to localhost in HOSTS, and I see that it's up to well over 8000 lines in addition to the entries I've put there myself. I don't notice any slowdown... yet.

Fonts query
by Guest Craig T- 3 replies

My cousin has a PC running XP HE SP2, and OE6. She installed some new TrueType fonts into the 'Fonts' folder, as she wanted to be able to compose emails using these - these worked fine, appearing in the drop down list in OE, until she ran 'disk clean up' on the PC. The fonts she previously installed have since disappeared from the drop down bar and will now not`reinstall into the Fonts folder. Is there a way of fixing it this? Why would disk clean up remove them anyway? Thanks for any help regarding this. (I posted to the OE group but was directed to this one). Craig.

How to turn off print job completion pop-ups
by Guest Mike Bailey- 1 reply
Seems since some recent Windows updates that when ever we print something to our networked copier/printer, we get a pop-up balloon saying the print job was successfully sent to the printer. How can I turn those off? Is there a registry setting I can change? I can dug and dug through all possible printer settings and find nothing. I've even consulted with the retailer of the copier/printer and they are unable to turn this off. Thanks, Mike Bailey

by Guest RealGomer- 5 replies

I scanned a document at 1200 dpi in B/W mode. I did that to make sure the details were there. I then used an image editing software to reduce the image resolution to 200 dpi. the original doc was 8.5" x 11". It's now 66" x 85". Suggestions as to what may have happened? -- I know enuff to be dangerous. Für Elise - Support the Breast Cancer & Heart Foundations

Hi Everyone! Setup: business network with 1 server (Windows Server 2003) acting as domain controller, file server, and multiple machines running XP Pro SP2. Each Machine requires domain logon on startup. I'm having a problem with a machine that is connected to this network. When I first boot the machine it connects fine and can access all shared folders on the networked machines. After about 30 minutes the mapped drives change to Disconnected network drives. When I try to access one of the shared/mapped drives I get a prompt for a username and password. When I enter the username and password it gives the message that the logon info has already b…

SP-3: You will lose the Address Bar toolbar in the Windows taskbar
by Guest VanguardLH- 3 replies

According to the TechNet posting at http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2589449&SiteID=17, Microsoft had to eliminate the Address Bar toolbar (available in pre-SP3) from the Windows taskbar due to legal reasons. I read the release notes at http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/d/8/cd8cc719-7d5a-40d3-a802-e4057aa8c631/relnotes.htm. There is no mention of this legal requirement to remove the Address Bar toolbar from the Windows taskbar. The claim in the thread is that the Address Bar had to be removed to eliminate integration of IE in the desktop. Huh? The address bar relies on the protocol handler. It parses the string an…

Symantec Live Update and Live Reg
by Guest Jack Gillis- 5 replies

I am running XP Home SP2. In the Control Panes there is an icon for Symantec Liver Update and in the Add /Remove Programs list there are entries for Live Update as well as Live Reg. I have, to my knowledge, no Symantec products left on my machine -- I replaced all of them a long time ago with other programs. Can I safely remove the icon from Control Panes and remove Live Update and Live Reg using Add Remove Programs?

How to bypass Microsoft Error Reporting.
by Guest Control Freq- 1 reply
I know this is the wrong solution to this problem. But, my application uses a third party DLL which sometimes crashes. The crash generates the usual "Send Error Report" screen which we are all familiar with. However, the cause of the crash is trivial to me, I just need to automatically relaunch the app when the crash happens. There is no corruption or loss of data in this system. The developer of the DLL no longer works for the supplier, and they want money to fix it, and my manager doesn't want to pay for it to be fixed. So, what I need is to disable the generation of the error report. And let a scheduled task relaunch the app in a few minutes time. T…

CD/Dvd drives?
by Guest ManyBeers- 3 replies

I have a Sony laptop running WindowsXP sp2 and it has a cd/dvd combo drive which only burns cds. Connected via a usb port is a Pioneer external cd/dvd burner which burns both cds and dvds. I have noticed when i "enable CD recording on this device" on both of them one will be disabled. In other words it appears only one of the drives at a time can have burning enabled. Is this normal? And can it be fixed so both can have recording enabled simultaneously?
