Folders in "Windows Temp"
by Guest 99XJ- 11 replies

I keep getting a "Cookies" "History" Temporary Internet Files" folders in my Windows /Temp folder upon restart. I can't delete them it says "being used by another program or file". I went to "Processexplor" (procexp) and it is being used but the same processes as the ones in the Documents and Settings/User/Local Settings/. I killed the "svchost" associated with it and was able to delete them. Why are these folders returning to my Windows/Temp folder every time I restart?

Updating old WindowsXP version
by Guest Humpty Dumpty- 11 replies

I have a Compaq laptop "Presario" which I bought on year 2002 and left unused for several years. It included a copy of WindowsXP Home 2002 and MS Works 2000 and MS Word 2000. Everything legitimate and I still keep all the certificates. After starting anew, I tried to update Windows by downloading the huge amount of files available in Windows Update, the computer became totally corrupt. I am going now to insert the Recovery CD and try to do a "Factory Restore". Now, supposing I succeed, my question to you people is: How should I proceed to update my old windows to the newest running version? I feel that any attempt to download from Windows Update the immense…

by Guest Peter- 3 replies

Hi all, I have the following problem with one of my systems. Windows XP SP1 (fresh install) won't restart or turn off the computer. Basically, it goes through the shutdown process, the screen goes black but all hardware keeps working. The only way to restart after that is by pressing the reset button and the ony way to shut it off completely is by holding the power button. Any help would be appreciated. P.S. The OS is installed on a RAID0 - 2 WD Raptors 36 GB each. Thanks

Need Help Reinstalling Windows XP
by Guest dnamertz- 18 replies

I need to reinstall Windows XP and I would like any info or tips I will need before trying it. I understand I will lose everything on my hard drive, so I need to back up important files first (is that correct?). If so, I know how to backup pictures, documents, and music files, but is there a way to backup Bookmarks and all the emails sitting in my inbox? Anything else I should backup that I'm probably not thinking about? What other things should I know before attempting this?

IMPOSSIBLE Networking with XP
by Guest Tony- 1 reply
I've got three computers hooked up to a network: first, a WinXP and a Win2000 computer connected to a wired LAN. Then there's also a WinXP laptop connected via WiFi. I'm using a Linksys wireless router WRT150N. Internet access for all machines is fast and flawless. But file transfers are impossible between any of the machines, regardless of file size. I can do a directory view of networked files, which usually gets me a few seconds delay and an hourglass, but any attempt at any file transfer gets me an hourglass that won't go away ever. Often on the XP machines I'll see a frustrating crash of Windows Explorer (Win2000 never crashes, by God!) I don't have a …

Can't logon - Help needed with ntpasswd
by Guest Bobby- 6 replies
Hi, In a previous thread I explained how I had stupidly taken my laptop off the work domain, and joined the workgroup. Unfortunately nobody (including myself) knows what the local administrator password is for the laptop, and now I can't logon. It was recommended that I use some software called ntpasswd to boot from CD and reset the password. I have created a bootable CD from the website, but my laptop won't boot from it. I know that it is reading the CD, and it will boot from an XP disk if I put that in, but not the bootable ntpasswd disk. Can anybody explain why this might be? Anybody familiar with ntpasswd? Thanks for any help Colin

How do I (or can't) delete unwanted folders?
by Guest Moonbarker Osbourne- 3 replies

I'm about to retire and mothball my old external hard drive (new one will be here within 24 hours). How do I delete the Recycler and System Volume Information folders? I set the System Restore to not monitor the External HD last week, but it still won't let me delete System Volume Information, saying it is "write protected or in use" I have no idea what to do about Recycler. I tried plugging the External HD into another comp, but it wouldn't see the folders, even after I set it to "show hidden folders"

by Guest R.A.M.- 1 reply

Hello, I use Windows XP Professional and PHP5 with Apache web server. I would like to send email from PHP5 code. I learnt that I should have SMTP server. I downloaded and installed Free SMTP Server - this is (as I think) simple mail server, available for free. I run it, but in Options dialog I see only: - DNS Server: Autodetect / Specific DNS server - I choose Autodetect - SMTP Port: Standard #25 / Specufic port - I choose Standard I PHP5 configuration file (php.ini) I need to specify sendmail-from addess. So I guess I need to (at least) prepare a local email address. How to do it? Please help. /RAM/

How do I get rid of unwanted toolbars on my taskbar?
by Guest Will Pittenger- 1 reply
I was checking out a program called AlSong, but uninstalled it when I found it couldn't rip music. The problem is that it failed to uninstall completely. It left its folder (which I killed already), and many registry items. I got one of the registry items, but it still has an entry for a toolbar for my taskbar listed (which does the same thing as WMP's toolbar). AlSong is also still listed as a handler for Music CDs. How do I kill those entries? -- will 68 at mtco dot com will dot pittenger1 at gmail dot com (use this address for large signatures)

A laptop stopped booting normally so the XPBoot floppy (created earlier) was used to boot the unit. How can one now get the normal boot working again? Copying the files on the bootable floppy to the hard drive did not seem to help. TIA Valmiki -------- -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com

Map network drive
by Guest Robert M. Lincoln- 1 reply

I successfully mapped as a network drive the "My Documents" folder from "Computer X". On my main desktop computer, I named this "drive X:". I then set up a password on "Computer X", and in the process, mistakenly chose the options to make the folders and files "private". I now can't access "Computer X" as a network drive. How do I restore this? Can I "undo" setting the folders and files as "private"? Will removing the password work? Thanks

Just as a matter of curiosity, it was not easy...but I managed to get a few screen captures of Win98 during the installation process. I have always been interested in the mechanism behind the scenes. It appears I got the device enumeration process. http://www.plazaearth.com/philo/win1.jpg http://www.plazaearth.com/philo/win4.jpg If anyone has a way to get a screen capture of XP during the installation itself, I'd be interested.

I am trying to figure out why it is taking almost 24 hours to backup 68 gigs onto an external USB hard drive using NTBackup. The computer is running XP Pro with 2 gigs of ram. I even set the external hard drive to Optimize Performance in Device Manager. What else could be causing it? Thanks in advance, Adam

Screen saver will not activate automatically
by Guest Jim Ormsbee- 19 replies

My problem is similar to many of those I've read about, but none of the solutions mentioned work. I have a 17" MacBook Pro with 2 GB of memory, which is running Windows XP Home under a separate partion. It is not emulating Windows. Mac OS is running in separatly. I have to reboot to change OS's. I purchased this last Oct, and it has been an excellent computer performing almost flawlessly. However, the first thing I did was install a Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 and a Wireless Comfort Keyboard. Two things I hated about the computer. Everything worked fine until a couple of weeks ago. I had some sort of gltch that removed a number of my des…

I realize that this is a Microsoft site but I thought perhaps someone could help me out with a problem I have. Whenever I click on 'Contact Us' on any given site it comes back with the pop-up message below: Could not perform this action because the default mail client is not properly installed. The odd thing about this is that it use to be able to do this. So can anyone tell me how I can correct this? Thank you, Robert
