Windows XP Search
by Guest Ted- 1 reply
Using Windows XP Home, I cannot execute a Search for files/folders. Anytime I try, the serch "hangs" with a Not Responding message in Windows Task Manager. In the Windows Task Manager pane, when I highlight Search Results to end the task, a second Search Results entry appears with Not Responding status. When I select End Task, both disappear and the search task terminates as expected. What may be causing Search not to work, and how can I fix it? Thanks. ted

YES. 1) it's (XP) destined for extinction... not a good time to jump on the bandwagon 2) if you lack SIGNIFICANT field experience in addition to whatever certificate you will get from such a program, you will have thrown your money away

Keyboard Hardware compatibilty problem???
by Guest Tmon- 0 replies

I have XP installed on my PC - late last week my keyboard suddenly stopped working - in the device manager for the keyboard I get an error message stating 'Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39)'. The drivers listed for the keyboard are Kbdclass.sys, Kbdhid.sys, WdfCoinstaller01005.dll (Microsoft_ and LHidFilt.sys (Logitech). I have tried to unistall/reinstall the drivers, unistall/reinstall the keyboard and search for updated drivers - nothing seems to make a difference. I even purchased a new keyboard/mouse and that didnt help either. In all cases the mouse works but for some reason the …

Best Buy and my Laptop
by Guest ericx- 5 replies

I recently had a 2 port usb 2.0 card bus adaptor installed on my computer. I am running xp. Since the installation, i have been unable to use my wireless mouse, my webcam, my mp3 player, and my touchpad mouse keeps freezing up on me. Even though i have the software and drivers installed for all these devices on my laptop, when i plug them into the card, they dont seem to be recognized by my laptop anymore. The only thing the card will recognize is the external hard drive i had installed for storage. I do have a power adaptor hooked up to the card since i was told by best buy that the external hard drive pulled to much juice from my laptop. (i have an olde…

Hide Programs in Add or Remove Programs List
by Guest RAH- 11 replies

I have a large number of programs shown in the Add or Remove Programs list that don't have a selection block to remove, or an indication of program size. They are just cluttering up the list. How can I remove and/or hide these? I thought TweakUI might have a way to do it, but couldn't find anything in there about the Add or Remove Programs list. Windows XP Pro SP3 Dick

Acer X241W incompatibility
by Guest John D. Carter- 1 reply

When I first connected the Acer monitor, constant interuption with "no signal" message and then momentary blank screen. A Microsoft update made the problem disappear, but a later update about a month or two later brought it back. Since this is a software fix, why is not Microsoft supporting the fix?? It is as though they had it fixed and then changed their minds and took the fix away. Could this be related to the European lawsuit? Any help at all? Thanks. (XP SP2)

Current Disk Size of System Restore?
by Guest randau- 4 replies
I'm having a problem trying to determine the current disk size of my System Restore points. When I go into the System Restore tool, it tells me I have 3 months worth of System Checkpoints (default 90 day limit) with about 11 points in each month. My C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\ folder (only one found in a RESTORE folder search) Properties indicates: Size: 437 KB Contains: 5 Files, 0 Folders The Restore folder has just 4 files in it amounting to 418 KB with no hidden objects indicated. Surely that can't be right for about 30 Restore Points. How do you see the actual disk size of all your current Restore Points?

2 hard drives 2 Windows XP
by Guest matrixmainframe- 13 replies

I plan to add a second hard drive to my computer (not yet decided on internal or external) to back up all my music and other files from my primary drive. All licensing issues aside (I've read the threads) can I install Windows XP on the secondary drive so that if the primary drive failed I could boot from the secondary drive without, as I suspect may be the case, having to open the computer and changing the jumpers so that the surviving secondary drive can be made the primary and vice versa. Also, having never had a drive fail on me this may be a stupid question but, if the primary drive failed and I got the secondary drive up and running as the primar…

I have deployed XP Service Pack 3 at home for testing purposes. I received it through my Technet subscription. I was told it is a "Ticking time bomb" because it will disable my OS when the RTM comes out. Is that true? Here is the version I installed: en_windows_xp_service_pack_3_release_candidate_1_x86_60967.exe Self-Extracting Executable Thank You for help with this.

blue desktop after login
by Guest xcoach- 1 reply

I have approximately 1600 users running XP SP2 and approximately 3 months ago, a user called up saying that after he logs in, he gets a blue screen with no task bar or icons. I had him hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and logout then log back in. Once he did that, everything came up fine, but sporadically he still gets the same problem. Lately, this same issue has been cropping up on other PC's as well. Having the user logout then back in resolves the issue at the time, but unfortunately, a couple of the users have this issue every time they login from a cold boot. After doing a lot of reading on the web, I ran across an item that said the shdocvw.dll file is the cu…

How to input IP Address
by Guest Robt.Black@gmail.com- 19 replies
- 122 views
I over-enthusiastically 'cleaned out' my computer. The upshot is that I can no longer access the internet or email. I checked with BT who assure me that there is nothing wrong with my Router or their phone line after running some checks I cannot config /release or renew as normal. I am left with 0.0.0.0 It seems I need to enter the IP address 192.18.2.1 into my PC, (presumably Windows). How/where do I do this, please. Thanks...Robert ------------------------

Quicktime for Windows

My Quicktime is corrupted and will not work. I recently tried to upload a video from my digital camera and it would not upload into my Kodak Easy Share software. It went into Quicktime and I can not open Quicktime. I can not view the video or open it. Quicktime is corrupted and will not open. Can I uninstall Quicktime and use something else? I would like to be able to email the video and save it on my computer in my Kodak Easy Share to view. Is there another type of media player I can use? I have Windows Media player. How do I prevent the files from automatically going into Quicktime?

TweakUI for XP Produces Registry Error
by Guest Puff- 11 replies
I use TweakUI for XP SP 2, and I was having trouble keeping the folder settings. So, I opened the registry and looked at what TweakUI had entered. It was NOT the same as what Microsoft had recommended on their website. The numbers were correct and the placement were correct, BUT, where the correct way to have the entries is BagMRU Size, TweakUI has it entered it as Bag MRU Size - with a space inbetween the Bag and the MRU. After hand correcting this, my folders are now keeping their settings. Is there anyone else that has noticed this error, and if so, is there any way to advise Microsoft's TweakUI developers of this of this error in their program? …

SOLVED - Cannot delete network share "you might not have permissionto use this network resource" PROBLEM WAS- I think network share is the right term for shared folder? For when it is in the view \\ip or \\compname window... Where windows shows the folder (this is clear in view..tiles), with what looks like a tap handle or propellor growing out of the bottom of the folder. (whereas the directory itself, when shared, has a picture of a hand underneath it) I am using - well, trying/messing around with/testing simple file sharing. I set a directory to be shared. Deleted the directory. And now I cannot delete the share.. There is no option to delete a …

Network access issue in Home Network
by Guest Panos- 2 replies

Hello, I would appreciate any help on the following very weird issue: - I have 2 computers (one desktop and one laptop) in my home network which are named “desktop” and “laptop”, and belong to the same workgroup MSHOME. - The Desktop is running Windows MCE SP 2 and the laptop Windows XP Pro SP 2. - I have activated file and printer sharing on the laptop and try to access a share from the desktop. I don’t use “simple” file sharing but have configured the share permissions to allow full access to the share by a user with administrator rights that exists in the laptop, let’s say “userA” - I have also activated NetBios on both PCs - I open a window on the deskt…
