Laptop goes on standby, or stops responding after screen saver - but standby is disabled This is really two problems, but I think they're related. Toshiba Satellite A210-04F upgraded (AMD Turion64 X2 TK-60 (2 GHz), 2 GB DDR2-800, 200 GB SATA HDD) w. Windows XP Pro SP2 Machine is set to switch to screen saver after 10 mins, and turn off the monitor after 25 mins. All other power saving settings are disabled on the AC profile. Password on power-up from standby is enabled. I very rarely run off the battery, usually it sits on the AC power all day. Automatic standby and hibernation is disabled on the AC power profile, both in the Toshiba power settings, and t…

Hi, This is a bit of a strange one. I remote desktop from my WinXP machine to another WinXP machine, both of which should have their default keyboard layout as UK. (I am using UK keyboard in terms of hardware.) At random intervals the keyboard layout of the remote PC automatically changes over to US which means that my " and @ keys get mixed up. This can happen several times a day having manually reset it to UK format. I've looked at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=906693 but I don't think it is quite the same thing. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks, Sam

Personal setting not saving
by Guest Raphael- 0 replies

After I downloaded some updates from Microsoft on March 11 (I think) my computer resets all my settings. The updates were mostly for Office 2007 (didn't see the other updates closely). This is not the problem. The problem is, the computer keeps reseting the setting whenever I restart my computer. Apparently, when a program shuts down due to an error, the computer resets the settings too. There is also this program that runs when I strat a program "verclsid" which kind of slows down the computer. I tried to do a system restore but the computer doesn't allow me to do so. My pc is a Dell XPS410. in the dxdiag it says XP professional but in my compu…

Restrict access to my documents
by Guest Sam- 4 replies
Hi, I've searched everywhere but found no answer. I don't just want to delete icons, I want to fully restrict access to my Documents. I have seen this done before, a message regarding contacting your system administrator comes up. I want it so that even applications cannot access this folder. It is adding to much to my My Documents folder on the domain and log offs are therefore slow. I know this is not available in GP, is there a registry trick for this? As I said, I have seen it done, just want to do it myself. Thanks Sam

A problem deleting local website
by Guest jameshanley39@yahoo.co.uk- 0 replies

windows - problem deleting local website, just folder I have encountered a strange problem with windows xp. As a demonstration. Open IE, save website (file..saveas..web page complete) So whereever you put it, you have something like this " 11/03/2008 18:34 104,796 Google Groups.htm 11/03/2008 18:34 <DIR> Google Groups_files " However. This is the problem. When I delete one, it deletes the other. I can see why windows wants to do that.. But I don't want this supposedly helpful behaviour. I can work around it by renaming one of them. But I want a proper fix. Anybody? note- before I was getting a message saying …

I use a library computer that is part of a LAN. The System Administrator uses WEBSENSE software and probably intermittantly watches and captures the screen I am watching. The library will soon have WiFi so if I used a notebook computer with WiFi capability in the library to access the library LAN, can he still watch and capture the screen I am watching?

Hdd Partition

Is it possible to make a copy of the partiton section on my hdd that holds the os and programs installed by the manufacturer of my laptop (iqon), the reason I am asking is because the company has gone into liquidation, so if I get any future problems with my hdd I'll lose my os, as the laptop came preloaded with all programs, I know there is a system recovery option by pressing f11, but I've had a new hdd under warranty a couple of months ago but if it ever had the same problem was hoping to just replace a hdd and not the os as well, thanks in advance for any help........

Hi all, i've been experiencing the following problem and i'd appreciate if someone could bail me out of this. i have 2 computers running windows xp pro sp 2. they're both on the same workgroup and on a dhcp network, whereby they are assigned the addresses 10.196.130.63 and 10.196.130.75 respectively. problem is that one machine (10.196.130.75) which is a desktop pc can browse and even ping the other, which is a laptop. however, the laptop cannot access the other machine or even ping it. in addition, both machines can access the internet and they're both connected to the same cisco switch (3548). i've tried everything, including going through the network setup…

I'm not sure this is the place for this and if not, I'm sorry. But sometimes, not very often, when I want to return to a previous web page I click the Back arrow ... but the system doesn't look for the prior page. What's up with that? Any way around it? This came up tonight on a gardening page! Thanks much for your information. Mike

I upgraded to a larger hard disk, using WD's file copier to clone the old disk to the new one. Everything seems to work, except for this. In My Computer/Properties, if I click on the System Restore tab, System Properties crashes. rundll32.exe freezes up and cannot be killed. I have to restart the computer. Did a dll get corrupted? Which one? How can I fix this? Win XP Pro.

Registry edit lock-out
by Guest Dr. Dos- 5 replies

I get an error from Norton WinDoc that .....\Macromed[ia]\flash\flash9b.ocx cannot be found. Of course, it cannot be found since (magically without any effort on my part...auto update?) it has been replaced by flash9e. Regardless of permissions I apply to the appropriate registry keys, I am denied access, even as administrator. I cannot edit the listing to go from 9b to 9e, and I cannot delete this key. This happens on multiple machines. How to overcome this?

Hi To ensure I have the latest file for something, when i run a .cmd to start it, I simply copy the file from a central PC when the .cmd is run on my PC. (the application is started on a few PCs). The problem is, it the file is unavailable or the server is unavailable then the application won't start. What is the best way of handling this without negatively affecting the startup time too greatly please? example so far @echo off net use J: /d net use J: \\server\share$ xcopy "J:\server\file1.txt" "C:\Myapp\" /S /Y net use J: /d /y Cheers Rich

Deleting Files/Folders through Windows Explorer
by Guest john454- 3 replies
I am using Windows XP Pro. When I am in Windows Explorer and select a folder on the left, the contents, which consists of folders and files appears on the right. If I select all the folders and files on the right and press delete, the files begin to delete. However, I often will get prompts appearing such as "this file is read only, are you sure you want to delete" as well as other similar messages. Is there any way to delete these files through explorer and not get those prompts so that when delete is selected, all files are deleted, no prompts?
