Quick Launch shortcut opens window in mid-maximized state
by Guest Paula- 8 replies
If you open a web site (i.e., http://www.wfsb.com) for example, and you add that page to the Quick Launch toolbar as a shortcut, and then you click on that shortcut on the Quick Launch toolbar, the window does not open full screen (maximized). It always opens in a mid-maximized state even though the button on the window title bar is the maximize button. Since the shortcut does not have properties to change how the shortcut runs, we cannot get the windows to open full screen. I have checked TechNet and the Web for info on this but cannot locate info on how to do this. I did, however, find a CNET forum that indicates others are having this same issue.…

How does Windows XP choose the most optimal domain controller?
by Guest John Hossbach- 6 replies
I have been reading http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/314861. There is a sentence that says "If the client is communicating with a domain controller that is not in the closest (most optimal) site, the domain controller returns the name of the client's site." I am looking for a technical explanation of that process. -- John

How to give files a Mouse-over description
by Guest Primoz Bradac- 5 replies

Hi all! I know how to give folders a customized mouse-over description: - I create a text file named Desktop.ini with the following contents: [.ShellClassInfo] InfoTip=<text of the tip> - I set the attribute of the folder with: attrib +s <path-to-folder> So whenever I point the mouse over the folder in Explorer a small tag opens with data about <text of the tip>, size, subfolders, files of the folder. I'd like to have the same "feature" for files. If I mouse over a file in Explorer I get a similar tag with e.g. Type, Date of change, Size. How can my own description be added? TIA, Primoz

XP quick launch icons missing
by Guest William and Teresa- 0 replies
I'll explain this as best I can. When I boot up my machine, XP is loaded automatically. I can immediately see that a few quick launch icons are missing. When I click on 'Start' -----> "Log off", I am presented with a Log in screen which provides my name and the opportunity to enter a password. If I just click on "OK" Windows is then run, but THIS TIME, all the missing quick launch icons are present, unlike booting up Windows automatically. Could someone please tell me what is happening and if possible, how to change my settings so that when I boot up, the missing icons are all present. Merv

services.exe hogging CPU on wake
by Guest George Neuner- 0 replies

Hi all, I've suddenly got a weird problem with a Sony Vaio laptop running XP Home SP2. After waking from sleep or hibernation, the services.exe program runs steadily whenever its Netgear PCMCIA NIC is inserted. This does not happen following a cold start or reboot. Although Process Explorer shows abnormal activity (12%) only for services.exe with all other items in normal ranges, the drain on the system seems to be much greater - it subjectively feels more like 90% .... everything works but doing anything takes forever. I'm sure there are no viruses or other malware - the problem abruptly when the laptop's battery suddenly died. Thinking it might hav…

Windows XP Physical Memory Limitations
by Guest MPH-101- 7 replies
I have an HP system running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 (SP2) that I recently upgraded the RAM on since many of my applications and simple Internet activities where thrashing the harddrive to death (I only had 512MB of RAM before the upgrade). I now have 4GB of DDR2 RAM and the HP system software recognizes all 4GBs of physical memory, so the installation is OK. However, Windows only recognizes 3.11 GB. My system has a 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 CPU, for what that's worth. Many years ago when I used to really get into operating system design, and the like, I used to have to create workarounds with the memory limitations of MS-DOS and early versions of…

I have been searching for weeks now to find the exact thing to do about this problem. I type this into the search here: http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6794 and get a multitude of items to read. I can not understand most of this and wonder why there is not a more specific solution to this problem. I was hoping someone that has solved this problem can direct me to an easier fix. Thanks. Dave

Hello! I have a big problem that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I did a defragment the other day and now I can't find some of my files. I did a search for one and it came up "hidden". How can I get these files back to where they should be? I also can't see "My Pictures" in the "My Documents" folder...it doesn't appear anymore, but when you look at my picture it says that is where they are? Does any of this make sence? Please help!!! I'm clueless. Thanks a million in advance! Jen

mscorsvw calling home
by Guest paulmd@efn.org- 1 reply

Well, I got an alert on Zone alarm. The usual "Program X is trying to access the internet, that ok?" kind. Anyway, my question: why does mscorsvw.exe want to access 131.107.115.28? and what is the nature of the communication? Instant research says that the IP address belongs to Microsof, mscorsvw belongs to the .NET Framework. But that still leaves oven the question as to what exactly is happening.
