When I try to search for files or folders on my computer the program stops responding as soon as I click 'search'. I have to end the program manually, after that the icons on my desktop disappear but reappear after a few seconds. No other programs seem to be effected. Does anyone have an idea what the cause may be and how to fix this?

Found new hardware wizard always fails...
by Guest Mark- 5 replies

Found new hardware wizard always fails... I then select Install from Spicific location and select "C:\WINDOWS\INF" and in most cases it then finds what it needs. However as part of some installs the system will hang, unless I restart and then when the wizard pops up I know that I have to manually select "C:\WINDOWS\INF" and all is OK. Where is the setting / reg entry that tells the Hardware wizard where to search? such that I can fix it.. Thanks

Re: Stuck in US Regional Settings!!!!

Re: Stuck in US Regional Settings!!!! I managed to fix this when I had a similar problem. I couldn't switch to UK keyboard even with admin access and I suspected some missing file or registry problem so I:- - copied all the *.nls and kbd*.dll files from the SYSTEM32 folder from a WORKING WindowsXP computer - exported registry entries from the working computer registry which I found by searching for "kbduk" (only the 2 keys found in HKEY LOCAL MACHINE were necessary), saving them as two .reg files and then importing them on the damaged machine (double-clicking them should do it) This allowed me to choose UK keyboard in Regional Settings and it all now …

Can't logon now I've left the domain
by Guest Bobby- 4 replies

Hi, I think I've really screwed up my laptop. I tried to get my work laptop onto my home network so that I could connect to the internet. I took it out of the work domain and tried to join the workgroup. It accepted the administrator password I had to type in to leave the domain. It said welcome to the workgroup. However, when it rebooted, it asked me to type in a user name and password. It won't accept any of my usual passwords, not even the admin password I used to leave the domain. Can anybody suggest how I might be able to get back onto my laptop? Thanks for any help Colin

XP Vista dual boot problems
by Guest JP Bless- 9 replies
My laptop came pre-installed with Vista in partition C: I installed XP in partition D: hoping it would automatically give me the option to select Vista or XP (as in good old days). However, the system logs directly to XP only. Is there any thing I could do from XP window for me to have the option to boot to XP or VIsta during boot up? By the way... my laptop came with Vista pre-installed and the operating system is bunched up on a "recovery disk." So I do not have the Vista on a separate disk. Thanks in advance for yout help.

Explorer Windows Only Show 1 Letter in Title
by Guest K- 0 replies
I rebuilt my laptop last night (XP Pro). Did SP2 of course and every patch available from MS Update. Also installed all my usual software. Didn't notice until the end, but now all my Explorer windows show only a single letter in the title. For instance when I open My Computer, the title of the windows is simply M. This happens only in Windows Explorer windows and not in IE. I did some looking online but only found stuff relevant to IE6 (I have IE7) and Google Toolbar - which I have but uninstalled and it didn't help. Any ideas anyone please? Thanks

Hello, I have Windows ME OS on one of my computers, it came from a questionable background with many viruses and spyware, I have tried and tried to get this computer up and running. The original goal was to get it online, I have DSL and it refused to load webpages. I spent a little more than a week, night and day removing unwanted programs/ spywares/viruses/adwares/etc. Straightening out annoying settings and so on, either way she worked beautifully....for a fews months, went online and did everything you could ask of it. And then...this is where it goes bad...because the of issues with the computer there was no virus software on it...it was taken to a risky …

Trouble Using High-Speed
by Guest skcocsihm- 2 replies

We just installed a wireless network connection on Windows XP Home edition and left sympatico dial up. So far all computers, but my mom's are able to browse the internet. On my mom's computer, it picks up the connection and is apparently connected. But when I open the internet, my mom's old sympatico ISP connection pops up and the computer won't use the new high-speed connection. I've tried working offline, undoing the dial-up connection as the default connection, and going into internet options and saying only dial if a network connection is not available, but nothing works. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

ipont.exe GROSS memory leak
by Guest e.falkenauer@optimaldesign.com- 1 reply

Hello, The nice zoom functionality available with Microsoft's new mice has a serious problem: the ipont.exe that offers the functionality never frees the memory allocated for (I suppose) the zoom's bitmap, and REallocates it each time(!!) the zoom is actioned. On my large screen, that makes a hefty 14 Megs allocated and never freed by ipoint.exe EACH TIME I zoom - after a while, Gigs of RAM are consumed, and the only way to reclaim them is to log out, or kill ipoint.exe from the Task Manager. Anybody knows whether Microsoft are fixing this gross memory leak in ipoint.exe anytime soon? Thanks, Emanuel

by Guest Lance- 0 replies

My computer is not recognizing anything as plug n play. It asks for software to load drivers, but there is none to load. It happens with jump drives ,usb hubs, etc. I've reformatted my hardrive, used my install disks to re-load all software, then used windows update to load every update over the last several years. Can anyone tell me what has gone wrong, and how to fix it?

Customizing File Open dialogue
by Guest AlanW- 1 reply

At "http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm" I found listed "85. Set Detail View for all Folders Open/Save As", which takes me to "http://www.cottonwoodsw.com/fx3summ.html". There I can find a utility called "File-Ex" which costs ~$20 and which appears to provide the capability to do something I've looked for in the Windows XP forums and haven't found. What I'd like to do is have an application's Open File dialog default to the Detail View, be sorted by modification date in reverse order, and not have the "Size" and "Type of File" columns obstructing my view of the modify date. Have I overlooked a way of doing this which does not involve investing…

Excel 2003 / Windows Explorer (XP) sort order differs - How to fix?
by Guest John Bartley K7AAY- 9 replies

In Excel 2003, mpeg2_MP@H1440_1280x720p_29.97fps_CBR_40Mbs_openGOP_zzscan.mpv comes before mpeg2_MP@H1440_720x576i_25fps_CBR_45Mbs_closedGOP_alternatescan_LFF.mpv In XP's Windows Explorer and also using DIR/ON in a command prompt shell window, the sort order is reversed. How do I reconcile the two so they sort in the same order? Thank you kindly.

Hi, I have been asked by a friend to fix a computer where the kids have managed to turn the desktop upside down and reversed. The whole desktop is reversed vertically and horizontally. Does anyone know what key combination would have done this and how to fix it. I have plenty of computer experience but have never heard of this. Apparently everything is the correct way up until the desktop appears Thanks for any suggestions DJT
