The volume icon has disappeared from the tray on the bottom of my screen. When I go to Control Panel and check Place Volume Icon on Taskbar, I receive the following error message: "Windowns cannot display the voloume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control Program has not been installed. To install, use Add/Remove Programs...". I have followed the steps recommended by Microsoft here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319095/en-us However, when I enter the final command (expand sndvol32.ex_ system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe), I receive the following error message: "Can't open output file: system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe." workstation disaster recovery - disk imaging?
by Guest Matthew- 6 replies

Hello, I've been running small networks for enough years to recognize that I spend too much time wiping hard drives clean and reinstalling their OS. Maybe it's only every three or four years, but it's an hours long process, what with all the updates & patches. Now I'm exploring ways to improve this process. I'm considering disk imaging software (like Acronis True Image and Norton Ghost), and wondering about XP's System Restore. Is XP's System Restore reliable, and can I make a restore point after the initial, clean install, and keep that restore point? Is that as effective as wiping the hard drive clean, and copying a ghosted image of that in…

I have the recovery disks for my laptop, but a Toshiba tech told me the only way to replace the config file involved wiping out all the data on my hard drive. Is there any way to extract just the config file? Can it be downloaded from MicroSoft or another source on the net? What exactly is the name of the file? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Removing the Automatic Update taskbar icon?

Re: Removing the Automatic Update taskbar icon? I'm asking this again, since I got no answer yet... Anyway to remove that Automatic Update taskbar icon that pops up, on occasion, when the updates are available? If you *disable* Automatic Updates, the icon stays there, permanently. If you select "Just notify me when something is available", you have to go in each time, and decline it. I want the taskbar icon gone, permanently. Turning OFF the Automatic Updates "feature" leaves that cautionary taskbar icon in the tray, permanently, and it's taking up valuable space on my taskbar.

Thousands of WPTEMP folders
by Guest Gregg Hill- 3 replies

Hello! I was trying to help someone with a QuickBooks problem, which looked as though it was caused by the "explorer" process taking over 400MB of memory (512 in the system) and dropping available memory to 4MB most of the time. I wanted to clean out the user's temp folder, but when I clicked on it, it took over fifteen minutes to show the searching flashlight, and it never did show the folder contents. I went to a command prompt and did a "dir" command. There were thousands of folders starting with WPTEMPxxxxxx where xxxxxx went from zero to at least 358000, which is where I gave up and killed it. I Googled and found references to problems with Wor…

by Guest Sarah- 9 replies

Hello, the performance and task manager windows let me see paging and cpu usage but I need to know if my slow down problems result from full ram. Watching the processes in task manager doesn't help, the total space used in mem is much less than the ram I have. My specific problem is incredible (!!!!!) slowness with Firefox. I hear it's a memory hog and want to watch to see if that is my problem. Thanks Sarah
