Slow Response After Long Idle Periods
by Guest Mythran- 7 replies
After I leave the computer idle for an hour or so, when I come back and "unlock" the computer, all the programs are very slow at responding to my input for several minutes. This slow response clears up after using the system over a period of 5 minutes or so. It is becoming a pain having to wait for what I type to be displayed on the screen. If I try right-clicking on ANY file, pffft, I can go off and get a cup of coffee, lunch, and get comfortable reading a book before the context menu appears. I assume that maybe all running programs are being cached to disk during a certain period of time of being idle, and that is why I get the slow response. If I …

Font Color for Desktop Icons
by Guest BruceS- 1 reply
Hi, All! I saw in one of the previous posts that one cannot set the font color of the desktop icons by using Display properties/Advanced. (I've tried. That option is greyed out in the setting box.) I tried setting the background to white (which results in black for the font), then re-applying a photo that is used for the desktop background. The font color switches back to white when the photo is loaded. Would like to have it black because it is more readable with this picture. Is there a registry entry that can be used to force the icon font color to black or some other color? Can some value in .theme file (IconFont, etc.) be modified? Is …

Shortcut with PRE-DEFINED Alternate Credentials
by Guest Jon Bakersfield- 3 replies
Hey all, I'm trying to create a shortcut in WinXP that runs with alternate credentials, but does not prompt for them. The user is only a user, I wish for them not to have access to an administrative account, but the application they need to run requires administrative privileges (starting "on-demand" type services etc.). Anyone have any suggestions? I've seen a couple of shareware applications, but to be honest I don't want to spend the money. Thanks!

At work my computer has been set to automatically lock after a few minutes of inactivity. I just find it annoying to have to re-type my pword to get back in several times a day. How do I disable the auto lock? I was told I could do this even though my comp is part of the network. We are running on Windows XP.

RDRAM MEMORY PROBLEM
by Guest hidekelip- 20 replies
Greetings. I have an old Dell Precision Workstation 340 and I want to upgrade my memory. I am NOT a computer wiz, so I searched online and found out that I need RDRAM memory, but the thing is that the prices vary from around $200 up to aaround $500, depending, of course, on what size of memory I wish to buy. But I was expecting it to be around, I dont know, 50-$70 as with other types of memory. Is there any other way I can upgrade my memory, such as using SDRAM or someting else thats compatible, or must I surrender to the fact that I need such expensive memory....? Please help me out! -- a response is always welcome...

Unable to bridge network connections
by Guest Jim Hatfield- 1 reply
I am using Innotek VirtualBox and trying to use its "host networking" feature. To do this you create virtual network adaptors in the host machine, using a TAP driver, which then show up as physical network adaptors in the virtual machines. To get the VMs to talk on the real network you have to bridge the virtual adaptors with the real adaptor on the host machine. In XP this is done by selecting all the adaptors, right-clicking and selecting "Bridge Connections" from the context menu. However when I do this on an XP Pro SP2 box, the menu item is greyed out. I have searched this newsgroup back to 2003 and the VirtualBox forums, but haven't seen any other pos…

Major problem for me
by Guest fkosmakos- 5 replies
I have a problem. Initially, windows was shutting off instaneously. A MS report said that there was a driver interferring with windows. It got so bad, I could not even boot up, without it shutting off. In safe mode I turn off all of my start up files, rebooted to normal mode, then restored the computer to 6 weeks earlier. That seemed to fix the problem, but then...IE will go to home page, but when I try to go to another page it times out. If I reboot, I can usually do one or two pages, then I have to reboot. I did a registry clean and IE worked for 15 minutes, then reverted back to timing out. Another important thing is that I can receved and send e-mail …

A question about Offline Files and Folders
by Guest Paul Hansson- 3 replies
Hello one and all, We have many computers within our organisation which are accessed by users who have Offline Files and Folders configured via Group Policy. Those same computers are also accessed by users who do not have any Offline Folders configured. We have found that no matter who the user is, and if they have Offline Files configured or otherwise, when ever the user logs in or out, the computer synchronises the cache for all users. It was my understanding of this feature, that the cache would only be synchronised for the user who was logging in/out, and so if that user does not have Offline Folders, then no synchronisation would take place. …

Hello! I have a very quirky problem that I honestly have no idea how to fix. Our athletics group on campus has their own server, broken up into the various departments and such. If you navigate to the server thru network neighborhood, then go into the share and one (and just one does this mind you) of the directories under the share, it maps a drive on that local computer automatically to that. Each time. So by the end of the day you may have 10 mapped drives to that share. I duplicated this on numerous machines. It does it literally when you go to this one particular folder under the share, no others! Its crazy! Why is this happening? I have no idea w…

Weird issues installing IIS
by Guest Chris P-T- 0 replies

Let me preface this by saying that this Windows XP build was loaded from an image onto this machine and there is one other machine that has been acting a bit flaky that has the same build. So, I have a user that I loaded a base image onto his machine (some of our basic apps we load like Office, WinZip, etc.). I just loaded VS 2005 Team Suite and everything installed file except for SQL 2005 Express. I figured, no big deal I am installing SQL 2005 Enterprise anyway. So I go to install SQL and of course it needs IIS. I grab one of my Dell OEM CDs to install and I choose IIS and add the FP Server Extensions. I click next and I will be darned if that thing ca…

Access to XP Home PC
by Guest Steve- 12 replies

Hi, This kind of question must have been asked a million times, but as usual I can't find anything that helps me! I've got a laptop with XP Home installed. It has one user account with admin rights but no password (stupid, I know!). The computer used to auto login to this account, presumably because it was the only one. I then installed some software on my computer which required a reboot. Since doing so, I am faced with a login dialog upon reboot, with my username in the username box. However, pressing Enter (no password) reports an incorrect password error! I've never had a password...Why has this happened? I've tried safe mode boot up, and when a…

Turning off User Accounts
by Guest Taxed Mind- 16 replies
Using Win XP: Under Control Panel; User Accounts, I have 2 user accounts. "My Name" - Computer Administrator, and "Guest" - Guest account is off. So when I turn on the computer I do not have to sign in and when the computer hibernates I do, but with only one choice, "My Name". This is good and the way I want it. However I want to try something on a different user account, can I activate the "Guest" account and then deactivate it later so that I never have the choice of logging on to it later. I do not want the option of having two accounts to chose between after my "experiment" Thanks in advance

Directory I can't remove - Crescendo
by Guest Jon G- 1 reply
I have a strange problem. There's a directory on my workstation hard drive that I can't remove. It's address is c:\windows\crescendo\ I have no idea what this is or how it became loaded on my workstation. It's not a worm, virus or spyware although it may be the result of one. There are no files in it and it's using relatively no space. However, it has tons if sub-directories, many with very odd names and therefore I can't delete them. I've tried everything short of wiping out my hard drive and starting over which I prefer not to do. Has anyone ever encountered something like this? How do you get rid of it? Thank you.
