Modify New Folder naming
by Guest clippan- 3 replies
Hi, I've heard that it should be possible to modify the folder name when you create a New Folder. For example the suggested default name "New Folder" could be modified to a new default suggestion, for example New Folder+date. This would result in folder names like New Folder 20080313, New Folder 20080314 etc. In that case, how do you do that? -- Many thanks in advance ! Clippan

Remaining Free Hard Disk Space

Remaining Free Hard Disk Space Although you can use Setup to create other partitions, you should create and size only the partition on which you will install Windows XP Professional. After you install Windows XP Professional, you can use more advanced tools such as the Disk Management administrative tool to partition any remaining space on the hard disk.

by Guest Garry- 3 replies

I have WinXP home SP2. After some cleaning of PC with third party software (I know I screwed up) Windows Explorer hangs without any apparent reasons and Autoplay is disabled on all discs including removable and mounted. I already checked http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?mode=a&query=windows%20explorer%20stops%20responding&catalog=LCID%3d1033&1033comm=1&spid=3221&range=1-43# As I stated above I cannot see any specific reason for hanging. I tried to repair setup by inserting REinstallation CD and typing /sfc scannow in RUN box (was advised to do so on other forum) - nothing happened. For autoplay I tried to "start>run>r…

External Hard Drive will not be release by XP
by Guest hal- 5 replies

I have a new WD 120gig external hard drive with a USB connection. I plug it in after the computer is booted. When I attempt to stop and remove it using the safe removal icon on the lower right of the screen while the computer is still powered up I get a message something like this "The 'generic hard drive' can not be stopped now as it is use by a program. Try again later" I have no program running at the time. The only way I can remove is to shut down the computer and unplug and then restart the computer. Very time consuming. Any solution? -- Thank you Hal

Not sure if this is the correct arena for my problem, but I would appreciate any help, even if it is just to direct me to another reliable source of knowledge. I have had the most horrendous problems trying to remove a trojan infection: - "trojanspy.banker". It had trashed my Operating System to the point that I (a total novice) undertook a factory re-set, which placed me back in late 2003!!! Having surmounted several difficulties along the way back to 2008, I find that "fings ain't wot they used to be" as the old song goes! First time around, I installed the Microsoft .NET framework version 3, after which Word, Internet Explorer, Photoshop and o…

Lost screens on Multiple Monitors
by Guest kmhoffman- 3 replies
I'm working with a laptop and a monitor plugged into it as my second monitor. In one of the programs I'm working with, I have screens that won't appear. I'm suspecting that they're floating somewhere off of my viewing area, but I don't know how to reset them to appear in my viewing area. This happened with another one of my programs, and someone in my office was able to fix the problem, but doesn't feel comfortable with the program I'm having problems with currently. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Remote Desktop and Security(!) on Private LAN
by Guest CT- 7 replies

Hi, Traffic is really low at this newsgroup, microsoft.public.windowsxp.work_remotely (where I originally posted), so thought it would be okay to post here as well. Feel free to tell me where to go, if this isn't the proper place. How concerned should we be regarding security during Remote Desktop sessions on a private LAN behind a Linksys router (WRT54GX2) with the firewall enabled, aside from changing the router's SSID and password regularly? We have no plans to access the LAN from the "outside" (mostly due to security concerns). Thank You. Cheryl

Re: RAM/Virtual Memory issue!

Re: RAM/Virtual Memory issue! This is a known issue. As you can see at 'Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0' (http://personales.ya.com/sailor/photodeluxe/) the problem can be resolved by adjusting the virtual memory settings but the cause is in a dll of XP SP2 and can be fixed with a hotfix from MS and it should also be fixed in XP-SP3. See 'Third-party programs that require lots of memory do not run in Windows XP Service Pack 2' (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894472/en-us)
