Unable to share files and printers between Vista and XP
by Guest Mr Mike- 0 replies
Here's my problem. Added new Vista Ultimate laptop to home network. Was able to share files on 3 XP PCs and Share Printers on XP PCs. Norton Internet Security Expired and I renewed. Vista Laptop no longer able to see other XP File Shares and Printers. After trying to configure, decided to uninstall NIS. Still unble to share XP file shares and printers. Vista Laptop can be seen by XP PCs occasionally. Vista network center shows network to be private - Check! File discovery is ON - Check! File Sharing is Custom. When I try to change to ON, and apply, nothing changes. Turned off Simple Networking on 1 of 3 XP PCs. No change. Can anybody help?

Desktop Icons and Least User Privilege
by Guest Thomas M.- 3 replies

XP SP2 We are in the process of restricting all our employees to standard user accounts on the desktop. For the most part this has all gone just fine, but today I ran into a problem that I have not previously encountered. I converted a group of users to standard user accounts and all of them lost the ability to launch Attachmate Extra from the desktop icon. Now, I tested Extra in advance and found that I needed to tweak the NTFS permissions to make it run as a standard user, and I added the appropriate file rights to our group policy. In fact, I currently have standard users running Extra without problems, so I know that I've got that end of things …

Hot to allow Normal Users Start/Stop system services (Performance Logs and Alerts)
by Guest Jon Bakersfield- 1 reply

So I've been through most every document out there about allowing users to start/ stop services. However every one I've read is about a client box in a domain where group policy is the solution. The service in question (or at least the one I know of - it doesn't have dependencies) is Performance Logs and Alerts. I'm simply trying to allow a user to start/ stop services on a local machine, but what I've found is that if I look at the local security policy I cannot find anywhere to make this change. I've also looked in Security Config and Analysis, Templates, etc. and found no answer. Meanwhile RSOP.msc (resultant set of policies) which would display any p…

Reinstalling XP Home - license
by Guest Charlie7805- 10 replies

After several years, it's time for me to start over. I have (legally purchased) my original disc with the license number. This disc is several years old - pre SP1. The last time I started over I remember having issues with installing updates. I believe I had to register first (validate) before proceeding. My concern is I want to strip my pc of all PCI cards, DVD and burner until my OS is installed with all the updates. Once I'm at that point and start to insert the cards one at a time, won't XP read the "score" and invalidate my OS install? Or should I not worry about it and install the OS with all the cards in from get go? Is there an ea…

I can't turn on the firewall because "Your network adminstrator is using Group Policy to control these settings." But this is a stand-alone PC, and when I go to C:\Windows\System32\ there is no Group Policy. I have XP Home, service pack 2. Thanks!

Hi, I know that Windows Defender does a comprehesive file search and Posts "No Unwanted or harmful software decteted - Your computer is running normally." If your system is clean. While a Free Microsoft Monthly Malicious download only looks for a hundred or so known viruses. So, Im just curious, as too why they offer both?? Thank you, Jean

windows xp activation madness!!!
by Guest carparkno1- 9 replies

I recently wiped my Hard Drive, and went to reinstall Windows XP. I have the OEM CD that came with my ACER pc here in the United Kingdom. When I reinstalled, it asked me to activate Windows. After much trouble, I got the installation key needed. I phoned Microsoft's automated line, and punched in the numbers. In turn, it gave me my activation code. i tapped this in, and windows was activated.... except.... Now, when I click on "Owner" at the login screen, it says I need to activate windows xp! When I click yes, it then says windows is activated. When I then go to log in, it says it needs activating, and so on and so forth. I am continually stuck betwee…

unexplained freezing!!
by Guest Simon Scheck- 3 replies

I know there is a very broad spectrum of problems that could be causing this, but any suggestions would be welcomed. I'm using XP Pro, and seemingly at random intervals the machine just freezes. Sometimes after being on for 2 minutes, sometimes after hours. The computer stays on (HDD lights not flashing or anything), the screen is completely stuck, and the mouse doesn't move. CTRL ALT DEL doesn't work, and there's nothing I can do short of turning the PC off at the box. I'm usually not doing anything particularly strenuous on the machine, happened twice this morning when I was just surfing, no other programs running (except background stuff). I've se…

Hi, I've been trying to remove quite a few (>10) read-only folders & their subfolders by following the workaround instructions found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256614, but I'm still unable to remove the folders. I created a new registry key UseSystemForSystemFolders and modified the new value to Type 1 in Registry Editor. Then I tried to use the attrib command prompt to change the read-only attribute by using attrib -r +s C:\V\Vids. But it says Access denied. What else can I do to get rid of these folders? Someone please help me out, thanks very much in advance! Sincerely, Regine
