XP Will not boot. Underscore blinks on the screen.
by Guest Al Can Help- 2 replies

I woke up this morning to two computers that had been restarted. I've had a problem with startup hanging on being unable to boot from A drive please press F1 to continue. That was on my screen. I've checked the boot sequence but that's another story. Once past that all I'm getting is a blinking cursor. I've tried rebooting without success. it does allow me to check my settings (pressing delete). It does not allow me to start in the safe mode (pressing f8). I'm running XP SP2, MSI with Intel Dual Core. I haven't made any hardware or software changes. I'm wondering if there is a virus? I did run a quick scan just yesterday afternoon. Thanks

Looking for a direct-replacement XP scheduler. Direct-Replacement as in replaces the original scheduler, I don't need to rewrite ANY of my existing scripts, nor third-parties interracting with existing scheduler will break or needs any changes. Need scheduler to ---- Offers to re-run missed tasks if for any reason skipped. Option to "skip once." Option to "save all settings" including security for recovery after OS/Virus crash for example. Options to use defaults. For example I need all my tasks to "wake up" so I would like it to be set permanently by default. Options to interract with other tasks, such as run task2 ONLY if task1 completed normally Show…

Flash Drives (USB) not working when logged into the network
by Guest jhunter@huntercomputerinc.com- 6 replies

My flash drives work great, on my computer, as long as I'm not logged into our SBS2000 network (I unplug my network cable and reboot and they work great). Here's what I've tried... - Both flash drives are fine (they work in other WinXP computers AND mine when I'm not connected to the network) - I've uninstalled/reinstalled the USB drivers (in Device Manager) - I've tried the front and back USB ports (neither worked) - I've tried different drive letters for the flash drive (in Disk Management) - The flash drives actually mount and are assigned a drive letter, on my computer while logged into the network, but it physically takes 15 minutes for this process to h…

I am search for an Excel spreadsheet having a particular value in a cell. Search Companion returns the message "There are no results to display.", when if fact I know that the values is in one of the several spreadsheets I am searching. When I do a "Find" for the value in these spreadsheets I find the cell. The value is numberic in a text field (e.g.: 49804418) and yet Search Companion doesn't find the file. What could be the problem?

Can I prevent unwanted system folders on an external drive?
by Guest Moonbarker Osbourne- 3 replies
Some time ago, I got an external USB connected hard drive that I use only for data storage. Since then, besides the folders where I keep my data stored, folders have appeared titled $RECYCLE.BIN, msdownld.tmp, Recycled, RECYCLER and System Volume Information Just before making this post, most of 'em deleted OK, System Volume Information will not delete. The folders where I keep my data total 55G. 250G minus 55G = 195G. My Computer sows the free space of my external hard drive as being 175G. 195G minus 175G = 20G of space that System Volume Information is taking up. I want to know two things. One, how do I get rid of the System Volume Information fo…

What app monitors registry changes?
by Guest bill@love.ranch- 2 replies
I have something running that keeps warning and asking permission for an app to change a regisitry entry. I want it to stop but I don't know what it is. It is not my firewall. It appears to be a Windows XP SP2 thing that started after a clean reinstall. - or maybe after an update was installed. Maybe it has to do with Sysinternals but if so I don't know how to stop it. When I say OK it doesn't remember and asks again on next reboot. any ideas.

Hi, I had SecurIt (Spyware, Virus & Firewall from my ISP) installed on my computer. I cancelled it a while back and I had the program removed. Since then I haven't been receiving my windows/Microsoft updates automatically; I have to manually search for them once in a while in order to keep my system update. I have automatic updated setup turned on under the security settings. I assume something is wrong with my registry but I don't what to do to fix it. Please help! Thanks Jay

How to stop Check Disk running automatically?
by Guest Bob S- 2 replies
If I start up my computer when I have a USB drive connected, maybe half the time check disk starts running automatically to check the USB drive. I can stop it if I catch it in time, but often times I'll hit the power button and leave the room for a while. When I get back, ready to use the computer, I have to wait for check disk to finish. I don't want it even to attempt to run automatically. Is there a way I can put a stop to it? If so, how? Thanks. -- Bob S.

Strange Dialup Behaviour
by Guest Danielle- 0 replies
The dialup settings do not carry through a shutdown. I set up a new dialup connect. Everything works as expected. I shutdown and restart. Dialup connects but no program works, not IE7 or other browser, not Pegasus (Mail program) or any other internet program. But if I set up a new dialup connect and connect all is back to normal. The OS is XP Prof SP2 and up to date with patches. I log on as administrator. The computer is an IBM (Lenovo) Thinkcentre 8187 with 3GB memory. Any insight, pointers and/or advice will be greatly appreciated.

authentication problem
by Guest Judy- 10 replies

I purchased a tower with Windows XP in Dec 06 to replace one running Windows 95 that crashed. My son was using it for games on disks and it was working well for that. Then he got a new computer and we put the other one to use to surf the net. The problem is that I have found out it was a pirated copy of Windows XP and I of course cannot get any updates at all. Is there any way I can use this computer - I don't want to spend a lot of money on it as I will probably be replacing it with a new laptop in about 6 months. Is there anything I can do in the meantime that would be a cheap fix - it is incredibly slow. I put in a USB wireless adaptor to run off…

What the heck is this DEP and how can I turn it off. It has stopped NO real threats. Mike

MBR fix - how? (2 drives)
by Guest John66- 22 replies
Can anybody point me in the right direction here. I have 2 hard drives installed on my system. The second drive is essentially a copy (not a mirror but close) I use as my backup. Supposedly the backup drive should be bootable and act just as the primary drive should the primary drive fail. It turns out that I need to have both drives installed and running for my system to boot. I assume this is because of the MBR. So, how do I go about fixing the MBR on both drives (is this possible?) so that I can boot from the primary drive by itself and the backup drive by itself - but have both drives running at the same time (for backup purposes)? Thanks f…

Windows XP setup diagnostics/debug available?
by Guest lewist57- 2 replies
I recently built a new custom computer that would not install XP 32, x64 or Server 2003. All setup routines either rebooted or hung at the text window "Setup is starting Windows". I had never encountered this problem before, but found hundreds of web pages with people who have had problems with XP setup, as well as a few informative KB articles, but no one set of "this is the answer!" results. My question is: is there any built in or add on diagnostic or debug routines that would allow an advanced user to determine why the setup routine is not completing? In my case, it was the motherboard, but it would have saved me a good week of spare time in trying …

Will I be losing some functionalities or gaining more? I have been scanning the web for differences but could not find any comparison. Can you help?
